Or baths or any kind of washing devices?

It's important, please know if you're right before answering.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Joss has said several times that the whole point of Inara's sponge bath scene (other than, of course, the sexy) was to show that this was the only kind of bathing possible on a spaceship. If it's not in the commentary for the scene, it is certainly in the script in my Official Companion:
"Inara is kneeling, robe pooled around her waist. She is sponging off - the only kind of bathing you'll find on this ship. A knock on the hatch..."

Hence, I would imagine, Zoe's desire for 'a real bath'.

There was, at one point, a discussion of showerheads in the rooms. Before anyone brings them up, I will say two things about them. 1) Joss's word is canon, period. If he says no other way to bathe, there's no other way to bathe. Plus, 2) on close examination, the 'showerheads' are actually lights. One shot in 'Our Mrs. Reynolds' of said-shaped thing behind Book shows the glint of a bulb, and an even more obvious case would be the lit one visible behind Simon at the end of Jaynestown, set quite low and over the bed. So. No showerheads. The crew has to sponge off.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

Good call. Great, now I can't get the image of her bathing out of my head.

I'll be in my bunk.

I don't think there are showers in the shuttles, and I bet that the space!toilet and sink in Mal's cabin is a special captain's perk, everyone else has to use the crew bathrooms. However, in OiS, Book is wearing a bathrobe and carrying a Dopp kit--he sure looks to me like he's heading toward his regularly scheduled Navy shower (water on, water off to soap up, water on for a minute to rinse off).

And I think that if Simon had to go without a shower for months at a time we'd never hear the end of it!

One could always argue that 'bathing' and 'showering' are two different things, so the only kind of 'bath' on the ship is a sponge bath. Showers are still possible, IMHO.

Now, I don't know how canon this is, but the folks over at Qmx created a set of Serenity blueprints, and the floorplans show 2 bathrooms (with showers only). One BR is on the same level as the crew quarters, next to Mal's cabin (not at the same level as their doors - imagine another hallway *below* the one we see). The other BR is adjacent to the lower-level lounge, near the guest quarters. This is probably the one Book is seen near. The door to this *BR* is clearly seen in multiple episodes. (In fact, there are a lot of mystery doors on the ship - I think the Qmx plans are fun because they show what could be behind those doors!)

As I said, I don't know how canon this is, but Qmx did work with people from the show/movie when creating these plans, so to me it seems fairly accurate.

I'm satisfied with these plans as the answer, but I do understand if others don't. So debate away if you disagree!

edit forgot to add re: shuttles -- again, according the blueprints, there are BRs in the shuttles, but they are only sink & toilet, no tub or shower. This could be what Joss meant about no baths, because it is especially true in the shuttles. They don't even have showers.

I'd rather be a smartass than a dumbass...

Maybe that's why everybody's hair looked a bit greasy in the BDM.
Hard to lather, rinse & repeat with a sponge.
