Ok. I'm new to the Firefly party and a long time scifi/fantasy fan. I got the Firefly box set for Christmas and didn't start watching it until a few weeks ago. Now, I've have seen all the episodes and have started going through the commentaries. Listening to the crew's comments, I sit there thinking what could have been and it gets me down. Why, why, oh why is every decent series cancelled? I have a theory. Could it be there are a lot of people like me around? I'm 46 and have suffered the woes of TV for 3 decades. Because of that I don't watch TV. It's dissappointed me too many times. I only hear about good shows through the grapevine. Friends and such. I didn't clue into Farscape until 4th season, and then boom. Cancelled. Dissappointment, again. I should know better. Frell. Firefly didn't even last long enough for me to hear about it and see it while it aired on FOX. Do you think that's part of the problem? There is a whole group of people that have given up on genre programming on TV and don't come to the party until it's too late.

When it comes to thought, network executives stop at nothing.

I realize that Universal has given the greenlight to Joss and crew for a feature film, and that lifts my spirits, but I fear it won't be enough. I want to know what River is all about. Who is Book, really. What/who is Inara(sp?) running from. Will Simon ever kiss Kayli? The list goes on.

Excuse me while I scream out the window. Again.

SPOOKYJESUS

When I was going through the big "how could fox..." depression stage I tried to look at it from a different way.

The tension that the executives put on the show can be felt through out the series - and that suits it because it's a show about a bunch of people who got steped on by an overly powerful corporation that itself got steped on by an overly powerful corporation.

Simply - if Fox hadn't killed the show it wouldn't be as beautiful as it is - or make the statement that it does.

...snippage...

Y'know, I have this same issue. But it puts me in mind of something that Zoe says to Wash in HoG.

Zoe says: I ain't so afraid of losing a thing that I won't try to have it. (sic)

Now she was talking about a baby but I think we could easily extrapolate the sentiment onto TV shows.

I have pretty much given up and hardly ever invest time in a new show b/c the disappointment is too much and too frequent. I happen to be the Grim Reaper - any show less than 3 years old that I get interested in is guaranteed to bite it.

But maybe we should take this as sign from JW that there IS quality tv out there. We just have to dig for it.

These thoughts and more brought to you by an idle mind.
