I read in an interview with Alan Tudyk that the plan was always on the table to kill off Wash, but that it wouldn't happen until 2nd or 3rd season. Though everyone loves Wash, his death would have impacted the fan base in much the same way it did in the movie, if not more after 3 seasons.

As far as Book, I think he would have left Serenity the way he did in the movie, though I don't think he would have been killed. The purpose of his death still alludes me to this day. Wash's was to be expected given the movie's plot direction, but Book's doesn't really hold merit to me no matter how often I watch the movie. I see Book's part in the series would have later been a continued haven for the crew of Serenity.

Just my two cents, but I could be wrong.

I don't know the answer to your question. And I really do not understand why Joss killed off Book & Wash. Wash's death was sooooo "easily dealt with" it seems by Zoe & the gang that I find myself turning away from the BDM at that point almost every time. And then at the end with Mal & River in the cockpit...kinda bothers me a tad. I think that Joss may have killed them off to send a message to Browncoats.....that this is it most likely, there won't be any more Firefly. I can't really think of anyone who could possibly be inserted into the cast for any possible new Firefly who I'd accept there. Well....maybe...Traci Lords as Helga Washburn, Hoban's older sister, recently released from prison after serving time for using goslings as sexual toys.

Book’s death gives Mal added inspiration (or provocation) to fight. Makes perfect sense.

I agree that Wash would still have been killed off, but much later (as apparently was planned). Also I think that the crew and, in particular, Zoe would have had the time to deal with it on screen in a way that a series can do but the movie couldn't. I think she would have gone to a very dark place (similar to Angel I guess but not wanting to make the obvious comparison), and she wouldn't have cared as much for herself or the people around. Eventually she would have come back to the Zoe we know, or almost.

Book wouldn't have been killed. Leaving the ship is a definite possibility, especially as actors like to take time off in real life to do other things, so I could see that tying in with Haven where the crew find him, or he comes to their assistance and eventually comes back to the crew full time.

I don't have a problem with the way the deaths were handled in the BDM. Book's was a little predictable but Wash's was a genuine shock and I think Joss made the right move. He may have deliberately set out to shake things up, and make a portion of the fanbase hate that moment, but fair play to him for having the guts to go through with it.

You know, the thing I often think about is the residual affects of Firefly's cancellation. Who would have played Kaleb in Buffy? And Jasmine in Angel? Would the shows even gone that route? Would there have been no Wonderfalls? Stuff like that.

Sadly, I concur. Like Kaylee and Simon finally doing their 'you mean to say' thingy: when I saw that, I knew Joss had made Serenity to be the conclusion of Firefly, not a new beginning.

By killing off Wash (and to a lesser degree, Book) Joss effectively sabotaged the continuation of the 'Verse. I guess I've always known this, but never really wanted to admit it to myself: you can't stop the signal, but you can ignore it a good while.

We may not get Firefly back, bur we could get The Shepard Book Chronicles, the story behind the man.

I agree with most of the posts that Wash had an expiration date. Though I also agree that Book's death seemed more like a plot device for the movie and not something that would have normally happened. Sadly it probably would have been Badger and a few other regulars that would be killed and that would be used to show us the seriousness of the situation.

Considering how much the casts of Buffy and Angel changed over those shows runs I'm not at all worried about Joss continuing on from where things left off. I think he could make it work.

I disagree with you there because I htink it was Books death which made sense annd not Wash's at all.

Have to say I didn't like either one of them dying off. Wash did a great counterpoint to Mal and gave Zoe a chance to show her feminine side.
Having Book as a mystery was great fun. He was always there with the unexpected thought to interject, one that made sense, one that everyone paid attention to.
Having them both dead is a loss and an opportunity to grow into a couple more characters (we should always hope).
In the end I guess I have to trust Joss to do the tale right.
Still want to know the answer to Book, though. Maybe begging and charity would work.

Let's not bicker and argue over who killed who! :) Far as I'm concerned, neither of them should have died.

That statement is absolutely correct. Without Book's death Mal would never have gone into his "war mode".....Still, a very difficult scene for me to watch,...And I guess ....ultimately...it's just a frikkin' movie right?...so why not tear your emotions to shreds in the process?...at least you walk away from it knowing YOU'RE alive.

I think so. I'd actually go so far as to say that if FIREFLY had lasted 5 to 7 years, that Mal, River and maybe Jayne would be the only members of the original cast left.

Both BUFFY and ANGEL had a bit of a revolving door cast. New characters kept getting added and older ones kept getting sacrificed at the "plot development" altar. So I imagine that Wash and Book would be bumped off, and that if not right away, then at least during sweeps or the premieres, they'd be replaced immediately.

A la "Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles"? I would hope so. People getting rent limb from limb is always better in CGI.

Nothing screams "story advancement" like a good kill and I figure that nothing could get us 'attached to' and 'separated from' characters quite like the Unification War and the plight of the Browncoats. :)
