Thats funny because I won't attempt sleep if there is something needing figuring. I hate half sleep. Either I do or I don't.

So Saturday night after some travel and work and mulling things over for the day I went ahead and let loose ending the night in a drunken stupor playing drunk checkers with shot glass checkers. I lost. Darn. But I did have fun. And I had fitful rest. But still the strange dream patterns did not cease. Not sure what they are about but the last week has been interesting to say the least.

Hard physical labor and being in nature seem to help the most, but sometimes a person just needs an outside opinion.

Lost train, thought gone poof.

ADD: Theres the wonderful ninja kitty thorn in my side 'cause she is mostly right.

Hugs deary. I did take the offline advice to heart as much as I took the online sort. Moving on to do for myself first and damn it feels good.

Hmmm I think I actually do that part. I think it's more of an exercise in hoping other people will confirm what I already sorta want to do. It tends to not work out and lead to ignoring.

See I just call those Anti-Social Days. When I have just had enough I ignore, avoid and just plain stay away from people for as long as it takes. Normally it is just for one day and I am better.

Kinda hard to do with the my daughter running around now. Normally Laurelin will at least take her out so that I can have a couple hours to myself.

Been a long time since I was able to take a whole day.... man sometimes I really need it too!

This may or may not be helpful, but the teachers that I would work for (and later even bosses I work well with) are the ones I respect on a personal level. It really had little to do with them trying to motivate me or what they actually taught. They are fair in the expectations and in consequences, even-tempered, logical. They also know their stuff but aren't arrogant about it. They genuinely cared about the students.

To illustrate: When I got a job as an executive assistant, I told the boss within a few months of being hired that if he EVER asked me to lie about something, I would be out of there. Or if he ever did the sadly typical 'cheat on your wife' thing. I just can't work with someone I don't respect. Turned out well as he is either a)one fo the good ones or b)is good at hiding any illicit activity.

It really depended on the teacher. Some had different ways of working. But I agree with RugBug I had respect for all of them. So, that's a common denominator.

One English teacher in grade school got me motivated by being encouraging and actually showing an interest in every student and what they wrote. We were doing a creative writing type of class at the time and when you can tell the teacher actually read your work and took the time to think about it that helps.

One English teacher in high school just treated us like adults and that pretty well did the trick. I mean he had rules and he laid them all on the line with reasoning for them. We were cool with that. He would also take time out to tell us stories and in general was just a cool guy. So, if he didn't have time to cover something and told us to read the rest that night then I'd do it.

Economics teacher in high school started as a motivator through fear. The dude literally acted like a drill sergeant. After setting up the seating chart he assigned the first person in each row the status of general over the people behind them. You didn't speak unless you were spoken to. There were twin brothers in our class named something like farshad and farsheed. He didn't like trying to figure that out. So, he gave them nicknames of tank and gun. Anytime he called on me it would always be "commander zeek how would this graph change if demand suddenly increased?" in a stern voice. But after a while it was clear that he was a good teacher and deep down he cared if we learned or not. So, again he was a good motivator.

My computer science teacher in high school was just cool. He was pretty much an ass but in the real world kinda way. If you asked him a question about how you were supposed to code something he'd simply say, "this is a problem solving class. solve your problem". He'd grade things in the same no nonsense way. We were programming on ancient macs and in one of my programs I had it print out "press enter to continue". However, the macs had "return" keys instead of "enter" keys. So, he took off 2 points cause he couldn't find an "enter" key. It was that kind of brutal grading that made us all strive for absolute perfection in our coding and when we wrote our answers on our tests.

There are more, but those were some of the varying styles that worked for me.

Good morning folks.

Teachers. Hmm. I actually didn't like alot of the teachers I had in high school. I barely remember any farther back than that. As for motivation, one teacher in particular kept me focused most of the time and I was lucky enough to have her for three classes in two years (English I, II, and Creative Writting). Not really sure how she did it. It was as if she recognized potential in all her students and gave everyone and equal shot at the material. I can remember being left behind a time or two but somehow I was alway given some sort of incentive to catch up. Many of the projects and exercizes we did were in groups and I hated the idea of letting them down despite the fact I didn't know them and wasn't friends with them. Thinking back I can see people in that class as equals. No BS High School politics, no popularity contests, no ego trips, just people learning how to better express themselves and how to correct mistakes.

I almost wanted to be a teacher because of the only teacher I respected and actually liked all through school.

Check it out. My brain is actually working. Guess I better follow suit.

I had a math teacher who made math fun, and had a great sense of humor, even with snotty, bratty 8th grade girls trying to make trouble. I called her Mom once by accident and she replied Yes, son? She was great. She made it fun, but made sure we understood.
Had an English teacher that was sorta the same way, in high school, she had a very uncommon sense of humor and applied it to teaching. She also encouraged us to really look at what we were reading and make our own opinions of what we were reading. I learned from her that it was ok to loathe Hemingway. She also taught me to appreciate REAL poetry, not the cutesy rhyming poems, but t.s. eliot, Ezra Pound, etc, to see how words could be put together to create something that evoked feelings, and made people think.

On the opposite side, had a geometry teacher that in one semester killed my interest in math and made it into the ugly avoid at all costs emotional burden it has become. I would write the most beautiful proof, logic and art combined, and he would grade it as a 0, not one thing right. Plus he only taught so he could coach football, so he wasn't exactly excited about his job.

Meh. Just give me female teachers with low cut blouses and high slit skirts and I'll go to school no matter what.

I had a high school anatomy teacher who was also the head football coach. I skipped a year of "earth science" due to grades, so I was in a senior level anatomy class as a lowly freshman. Redheaded geek child in the land of the jocks! I remember dissecting the fetal pig. It was like surgery...my blonde fullback lab partner standing there handing me instruments when I called for them. He did say thank you for the fact that his grade was much higher than it would have been without my help. And yes, I was STILL a hopeless nerd after the class......BLEAH!

Hey y'all.

On the ponderable, I guess I'm kind of weird. I had lots of teachers I liked, but none that motivated me. I've always been almost entirely self-motivated, for as long as I can remember. Either I want to do it or I don't, and no amount of encouragement or coaxing from anyone else will change that. My dad and my husband are the only two people who have ever had any sort of sway over me when it comes to motivation, but a large portion of that is just wanting them to be proud of me.

I did have teachers in high school who made a different sort of impact though. The band leader and I had very similar tempers and working with him taught me how to accept when I was wrong, argue fairly when I was right, and get my point across without turning it into a screaming match (all things that have been hugely useful in my marriage to a guy who also has a very similar temper). And I TA'd for the civics teacher my Junior year, and he always treated me like an adult, more so even than his Senior students. Now I work in an industry where everyone is male and 5 to 20 years older than me, and somehow that civics teacher helped me learn how to act like an equal with people who are older and far more experienced than I am.

The biggest impact a teacher had on me, though, was in one 3 minute conversation with my AP Statistics teacher my Junior year. The guy who sat behind me in the class kept making comments about me being a slut, etc. I had dealt with years and years of bullying by that point (serious, serious bullying -- I had a mild form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from it), so instead of trying to deal with him on my own or trying to ignore it, I decided to ask the teacher to move my seat.

When I did, she asked why, and I reluctantly told her. I have never before or since seen a teacher that angry. She told me that the boy was sexually harassing me, and that school policy was that he would get one warning, and then he would be expelled. This was about a month before the end of the year and he was a Senior, so if he said one more thing to me, he wouldn't graduate. He was quite subdued and sheepish for the rest of the year.

She took the time to enforce an existing school policy where literally hundreds of teachers and administrators had turned a blind eye in the past, and it meant the world to me.

I don't think that's very weird. I'm actually a lot like that. I do things out of my sense of duty, responsibility or desire, and usually never because someone has asked. It's very frustrating for my bosses because they don't know how to motivate me. Truth is that they can't...I have to want to do it. Luckily for both me and them, I take a huge amount of pride in my work, so I have a hard time of doing things half-assed.

HUGS Ck I'm glad that teacher stood up for you and I am very angry that others did not. Every time I watch a tv show where a kid is being bullies I think " where the hell are the teachers?" That sort of thing does not go unpunished or unnoticed in my classroom and it really bothers me that it might in another room...

Ok I so hate having the flu while I am trying to teach. I have the icky death stomach flu ( I'm ok as long as I don't eat or move around too much) hopefully the kids will be good today, but they usually are when I am sick.

Speaking of being a rebel my darn company is making us enter our resume type info into a big database. We get to have a profile description or ourselves. I ended mine with the Office Space quote, "a straight shooter with upper management written all over him". I'm so curious to see if anyone even reads these and if they recognize the quote.
