i don't know if this has been brought up before... but which flying style do you think Wash will be using in the BDM? (amusing me right now is that the little picture on the left is wash sitting at the controls

)

so ummm... yeah... that's what popped into my head the other day and i wondered what my fellow browncoats were thinking...?

GUNRUNNER

I have a theory on this whole Wash piloting thing;
He is very calm in intense situations i.e. in Serenity when he is facing sure death and in Trash when his is doing a very difficult maneuver.

He is crazy and unpredictable when he is flying in an intense but NOT life threatening situation like in The Message. Because they get chased by Alliance ships all the time and he is accustomed to it, so he lets himself go.

Joss said in the DVD commentary that the original concept was that Wash would get very calm in tense flying situations, but that Alan kinda played the Message flying scene over the top, and they let him run with it.

i remembered that in the commentary too... i just wondered whether they would "let him run with it" in the movie too or if they would want to go back to the original calm and controlled Wash.
I rather liked his controlled manner myself, it contrasts so nicely with his usual style.
I don't know what he'll do in the movie, that's why i asked. i like the idea that there is a justification for the different styles (thanks Gunrunner, i hadn't noticed that before).

I can't wait for the the BDM!!!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Personally I liked the way Alan played the scene in the canyons in The Message. It gave more feeling to the stress and intensity of the moment without making Wash seem too high strung.

Once again, Joss Whedon is right on with the concept. I assume the pressure came off the directorial pedal when the series was cancelled; my understanding is that this was during the filming of 'The Message'. Engaging as Alan Tudyk is, he is an actor chappie

Yeah, folks... I actually wrote a longer version of my post, above, but edited it because I had included information that I was morally not at liberty to discuss in a public forum. Thank goodness no one appears to have read the unedited version.

Suffice to say that as an air traffic controller, I deal with pilots in hairy situations on more occasions than I'd really care to. The good ones always keep their heads. They have to focus on tasks and timing, and even a little stray energy bouncing around the cockpit, er, 'flight deck', can lead to disaster.

Wash's piloting in the Message was more like how controllers respond to stressful situations... ;)

Well, I think Wash's way of flying in The Message seems more natural - and of course I love the bit where he looks up and says "I didn't think of that." What??!! He's not infallible??!! Very funny stuff! But truly - he can fly anyway he wants to, as long as he's flying Serenity.

Now I need to make a confession. -errherm-

I can't believe that I just NOW realized that "who's flying this thing?!" is a quote from Bushwacked!!!!! Sure, I've seen it referred to in the 'how old are you' thread, and now on this one. But for some bizzare-o reason, it just never clicked. Proof that my head don't always work right!! sigh...maybe banging it on the desk for a bit will help...or maybe not...

You know how some days you're just in the zone. Wash was in the zone in Serenity, a very serious, get away from Reavers zone.

In The Message he was just having a blast, loving the flying, coz, you know, that kind of flying really wakes you up and it's just plain fun.

Don't squat with your spurs on.

Well, since both happend (so to speak) I guess we'll have to go with that. Maybe flying through the canyons was a notch or to hairier (if that's how you spell more hairy) than pulling an Ivan in the wide open sky.
