I saw Serenity first, but it had me at hello... or rather "may experience some slight turbulence and then explode"

And "you shoot me if they take me.....well don't shoot me first!"

What about you?

Well, for me, it was the series first and, like a lot of other people, it was the kick into the engine.

Had loved Angel and Buffy, so I knew that Joss always messes around with the cliches but I just thought that was genius.

From then on, I was hooked.

From the Train Job when Mal tells that obnoxious Alliance-loving dude that he wanted him to say that to his face so she could get behind him. And then, there's Zoe bashing that guy with her gun. Loved it from that moment on.

I'm with you! Missed the series run... but saw the beginning of this movie at work and new it was something I wanted to watch! It was that line and the "did you say Explode? I don't wanna explode!" that got me!

"Mal. Bad. In the Latin."

Saw "The Train Job" when it first premiered, and that line practically haunted me (in a good way) until I got a hold of the DVDs four years later. It made me wonder why you would give a name to the hero when it means "bad". Now I know.

The movie will always be sub-par with me. And not just because of Wash, things seemed out of place and didn't click like the series.

Crow in the engine yes, plus the whole scene with Zoe and Mal at the detention center.

"Whatever happens remember, I love you."

"Sir?"

"Because your my wife."

"Right, sir...... honey."

Done with perfect dead pan effect.

I saw the movie first too. Then ordered the DVDs.

The moment for me was when Mal shot Dobson in the pilot. My jaw dropped open and I knew this was something different.

Well, I prefer the series too, but, because I came into the fandom late, I will always have a special place in my heart for the movie.

And, judging by some great posts above, the movie did an excellent job of introducing many people to the crew and sparking the fires of obsession for many years to come!!!

I saw the movie first as well but didn't really think too much of it until I started watching Firefly a few months later. It was the entire opening sequence of the Pilot that sucked me in.

I wasn't too big on the first 10 minutes or so (the war scene), but after that it was pretty much every single thing that got me hooked.

What is it about firefly that just compels people to spread the good word. I have loved shows before but I have never felt this burning need to share my obsession with others... Is it just that we are convinced of the quality and characters or is it the fact that it was cancelled long before its time?

Considering I saw Serenity before I saw Firefly, I can't say the show had me first. However, I think the moment I remember the most was when Shepherd Book said, right before he died "I don't care what you believe...Just beleive." It was like a moment of pure...realization. I knew I had to finish watching the movie.

(That and I thought Sean Maher was super cute. But it was definently the Book quote that got me.)

-------------------------------------
"You are pretty funny."
"And you're pretty...pretty."
"What did you just say?"
"I said that you were pretty."

In the future there will be a nursing home/asylum where only Browncoats will be admitted. And we will spend all day rewatching episodes and talking about our favourite lines/scenes/moments/characters.
Because by then our brains will be mush, our bones will be creaking and we'll have forgotten what we said minutes after we said it.

Something to look forward to.

Back on topic: The series got me although it wasn't the scene where Crow got kicked in the engine. That seems to be fave amongst most folks.
I can't really say where exactly it got me.I'm UK bred so I knew the show had been cancelled before Scifi started showing it. And before each episode I told myself that it really wasn't worth my time to continue watching. But I did. If I had to pick it may have been Bushwacked when I really got the idea that River was psychic. That and Jaynestown being so gorram hi-larious.

"I don't believe in suicide, but if you'd like to try it it might cheer me up to watch."

Saw the BDM first, didn't know about the series.
Saw the end of Ariel on a Sci Fi marathon, the scene with Mal and Jayne getting dead was an eye-opener.

Is there somewhere I can sign up for that, or do we just show up with creaky bones, old brown coats, and ragged cunning hats?

I found the movie confusing, it was the first thing I saw and I couldn't understand why this bunch of different people stayed on the ship, Mal clearly didn't like having River on the shipso why not leave them on the planet and how do Jayne and Kailley get on? it just felt unnatural and very unlikley, I also couldn't understand why Mal whent to Book for advice!

But the series got me! we bought the box set and couldn't stop watching!! how could I choose a certain moment?! all of the above quotes are awesome!

I'm at work today and its been killing me that I've not been able to put these thoughts down till now!

My - one of- Favourite scenes is when Jayne is Paralysed on Simons table and he gives this long speach about being able to trust him because he's a doctor blah blah blah then he leaves and river adds 'also, i can kill you with my brain.'

BRILLIANT!!

I saw the Series when it first aired on the SciFi channel. I was hooked when Kaylee ran into the engine room to shut things down, got up to that corner, lights went off and she said, " Ok, now I can't get down."

Mal: Cry Baby cry.
Wash: Make your mother sigh. Engaging the CryBaby.
