There's a girl at my work who likes sci fi and Buffy and I asked her if she liked Firefly. Well, she had never heard of it, so I loaned her my extra Firefly DVD set.

When I handed it to her, she said, "Oh, I remember this show. I saw some commercials for it, and it looked so dumb, my husband and I decided not to watch it. A naked girl in a box? A spaced out hooker in space?"

I spent nearly 10 minutes convincing her to forget the stupid commercials Fox ran.

Fox doesn't make it easy.

Succatash,

I know exactly what you mean. I remember watching those commercials and thinking, "well, I'll watch it once, since it's Joss Whedon, but it looks really silly." And then, of course, I loved it. But I just had to talk a friend out of his view that it was a "space farce." (Took a few months, but he finally order the DVD's and watched them three times in as many weeks).

Fox really knows how to kill a show. (Slightly off topic, but I love the way all the DVD's start with the disclaimer that the opinions in the commentary and interviews are not those of Fox. I always find myself thinking, "Oh, you mean the opinion that the show was good and deserved a good long run? That opinion?")

Yeah, she and her husband thought it sounded like a Baywatch in Space sex romp.

I'm surprised she even remembered the commercials for a cancelled show she never watched. But she did, she must be a smart girl. She'll be a Browncoat in no time!

Yup. The stupid ads drove away the smart folks, and the intelligent writing drove away the dumb-asses...

I'm glad I came across our beloved "Firefly" before I saw the ads. After having seen the really stoopid trailers FOX TV ran, it's no wonder people didn't know what to make of it.

They can have my "Firefly" DVDs when they pry them from my cold, dead fingers....

Oh yeah, you, FOX TV!!

Coincidentally I never saw *ANY* ads for FF so I had no idea what it was about. I knew it was a JW project and was desperately in love with both AtS and BTVS -- so there was *NO* way I'd miss it.

However, I was very discouraged by its 8pm timeslot as that was my daughter's bed time so I always missed almost half of it - thankfully my dear husband taped it for me each week. Friday was my favourite night of the week, 8pm Firefly and 9pm Farscape (on SPACE). It was loverly but, of course, shortlived. sigh.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Those commercials are what made me hesitant to watch Firefly too 'Tash. I thought they sounded cheesy and made the show seem ridiculous. Am I ever glad I watched despite Fox's horrible commercials.

Nice save by the way, converting your co-worker despite the damage done by Fox.

If I had known nothing of Firefly or Wonderfalls when I first saw the ads for them, I would not have watched. Because I knew Joss and Tim were behind them I never hesitated to watch. But with Wonderfalls especially, when I first saw the ads I knew the show was in trouble. Combine that with being on friday night and it never had a chance. Job well done, Gail!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

To follow up on this story, both she and her husband (who was VERY skeptical at first) are now completely hooked on Firefly. They are sad it was cancelled and they blame it on Fox advertising.

Yay, 2 new converts!

Resistance is futile . . .

I've converted quite a few folks, including one entire family. But what's amazing is that I continue to stumble across fans at my office who I didn't even know were as addicted as me. It's a huge outfit of 2,500 to 3,000. They will bend to my will . . .

Scraily enough, it was the commercials for Firefly that made me want to watch. Had I known Joss Whedon had been the creative force behind the show, I most likely would NOT have watched ;) Not a big Buffy fan ;) Of course, any new Sci-Fi series I'd most likely give a chance, but there was something different and compelling about those commercials. And it was Fox, who gave us The Simpsons and X Files...oh how I wish Fox was still in their early days...

I found Firefly through a relatively bizarre bit of serendipity. I hadn't had a TV for years, but my ex-wife bought a new TV and gave us her old one. My sons had just figured out that with our cable internet, we also got cable TV. That night, on Slashdot.org, I saw something about a new sci-fi show called "Firefly". I checked and it was coming on in twenty minutes, so I watched. You know the rest.

I feel rather fortunate that I didn't see any of the ads, cause I probably would have avoided it based on the ones fox did.(downloaded from fan sites).

LOL, the golden lunchbox? Just made it up and then later translated to German because I was going through a German Language Learning phase.

Putting it into German was the genius stroke. For some reason, it makes it twice as funny.

Is there a translation, for those of us who remember very little of the very little German we took?

at first i was totally turned off by the whole space hooker thing... then my mom saw the preview and was like "that actually looks interesting" so we sat, we watched, we loved, we cried (well not really) and the rest as they say is history!

FOX likes to promote shows with SEX that's why FOX loves The OC so much. They can take any random snipit from the show and find some kissing, or screwing, or having a cat-fight in a pool... oh wait was that The OC or Dynasty?

Oh yeah, the pool cat-fight has been seen in Dynasty, Melrose Place, and now The OC... so sad when original scripted shows get cancelled and the unoriginal ones get tons of publicity and high ratings.

By the way, I really didn't know if I wanted to check out "Firefly" when it original ran... the previews made it look like, well 90210 in space, but because it was Joss I checked it out... at least they put "From The Creater of Buffy" in the promos...

I don't know if anyone else experienced it but all of the hard-core Star Wars and Trek fans that I know said that they hated "Firefly" (after night 1 premiered). I knew that it was a "hit" then because it pissed off the Trekkies.

i DO aim to misbehave

I do kind of remember thinking along those lines until I found out it was Joss Whedon. Even then, it took "Our Mrs. Reynolds" to make a fan out of me. This would mark the one and only time I gave a new series more than two episodes to impress me, and look where it got me.

Pissin' off Trekkies is too easy, though. Just point out a problem with their beloved show and sit back an' watch them splutter out an excuse...

But Star Wars? That ain't exactly much different from Firefly, now, is it? It's got much the same kinda 'get on with the story and to hell with the details' feel to it, by comparison to Trek anyways. Well... the original trilogy does, at least.

Oh... and I am real sorry I missed the fun with these ads. They sound like a hoot.

We didn't get the Fox adverts here but my daughter saw the advert on Sci Fi Channel here that mentioned Buffy, Angel, Joss Whedon and new series - apparently Buffy is like a magic word to kids that age - and made me watch. Thankfully I did and the rest is history. I'm in the process of trying to get a co worker to watch FF - I think the mention of Adam Baldwin caught her attention. A big Angel fan....

Oh and I am a Star Trek/Wars fan but never could quite figure out why I wasn't supposed to like other Sci Fi shows.
