Important people don't do field work.

Stardust is coming out on DVD on the 18th December. I was very taken with the movie (though that might have more to do with what I was watching at home. A bunch of European depressors and Japanese horror. Maybe I just needed something with a happy ending.) And I'd recommend it to anyone.

Along with this recommendation, however, is another one. Please...please! Read the book!

For that matter, read any Neil Gaiman book you can get your hands on. The guy hasn't let me down yet, and I've never even read any of his comic book work. (Shame on me, I know) But, you have to admire someone who writes what is essentially a fairy tale that has a suprisingly hot sex scene in the front, and a main character whose first line is "Oh fuck!"

(On another side note, the movie is suitable for just about anyone. Don't let what I've said about the book deter you.)

The main characters are likeable, the bad guys are suitably bad, but beyond that, this movie was just fun. Something I've been lacking in my filmgoing experience of late. I'll take this over Transformers anyday.

So, rent, buy, steal (don't steal...that's bad!)or acquire it any way you know how.

And, don't blame if you didn't/don't like it! It's just a recommendation!

You are so right about Gaiman, he seems incapable of writing bad or uninteresting stories. While I would like to chide you for not having read Sandman I cannot because I have yet to read Stardust.

Like you, this movie is not my normal fare but I did find it quite entertaining. It has that great fairytale quality reminiscent of The Princess Bride. Both films have a great mix of adult themes and child like wonder.

The story itself isn't the only bright spot here. One would be hard pressed to do a better job casting this film. The highlights for me were DeNiro and Pfeiffer. Before seeing this film I could not have pictured either one of them in these roles. To say they pulled off their parts would be an understatement, they owned these roles.

All you folks that missed this in theatres should at least run out and rent it.

i will have to agree with the above two. my mom had taken me to go see it was on the big screen. hadn't heard anything about it, but last time mom took me to a moive i hadn't heard about or knew nothing about was serenity so i agreed to go. it was one of the best movies i have seen this year.

To me it seemed like a fairy tale with just the right amount of seriousness of "real world" activity mixed in. The bad guys get frustrated when things don't go their way, as do the good guys. Things don't always go the way they're supposed to for everyone involved.

And, Michelle Pfeiffer, after she becomes young (At the beginning of the movie...it's in the trailer, so don't sue me!) again, she whips off her clothes to check herself out. To me, that seems like a very realistic thing to do. And, I was astonished to find that that very thing takes place in the book as well. Probably not with as much relish as Michelle put into it, but, it is there.

I thought everyone was spot on in this. From Tristan, right on down to Peter O Toole as the Old King. I left the theater grinning like an idiot, I was so happy with how things turned out.

Also, I forgot to mention, but, this movie has one of the best musical scores I've heard in a long time.

Wow...writing all this makes me wish I had a Babylon candle so I could go back to the theater and see it again!

Ok before I go on I want to say I love the book, it's one of my all time favorite fairy tales and a very enjoyable read. I went into the theater knowing full well it would be an adaptation and would most likely be quite different than the book. If you haven't read the book do not read on as this contains ***SPOILERS***.

So did any of you noticed how completely and thoroughly dumbed down this movie was? They ruined the names, the narrative, the dialog and the characters. I am actually hard pressed to find anything in the movie that resembles other than vaguely the book. The biggest problem of all was how they butchered the entire moral of the story. In the book the evil witch-queen does not die in the end but uses her power so selfishly and greedily that she ends up a withered old woman, who Yvaine proceeds to kiss on the cheek and send on her way. That was my favorite part of the entire book, it was intelligent and refreshing. Also Tristran(note the proper spelling) and Yvaine journey for many many years, finally settling down to rule battered and old. The idea of the heroes not being perfect or mighty or extremely beautiful was what made the story so great. There are so many things wrong with this movie, most even unrelated to the poor job of adaptation that I couldn't list anymore without taking a few hours. To try and pass a half-realized, mulched up peice of drival off as an adaption of this book is a crime deserving a very dark punishment.

I had to get that off my chest, never have I ever gone to a movie and felt as completely cheated and duped as I did after seeing Stardust. Easily the worst movie of a year with alot of really poorly done movies... ok now go get the book it's amazing.

It's good to know some could enjoy this movie and takes the edge off how cheated I felt afterwards. If I hadn't known the theater staff I would have asked for my money back promptly, I just couldn't they are always so polite and friendly.

I really have to add a warning to parents, this movie contains a few sexual references(not nearly as much as the book) and a few lewd and violent scenes. I'm no prude and children see worse on TV but to say the movie is family friendly is not true. At least not for younger children.
