Found a very interesting conversation comparing Firefly with Heroes. Personally, I like Firefly tons better just because of the character development. Heroes is good though, but I agree with the one speaker when he says:

"Heroes is about using superpowers to save the world. Serenity is about a crew trying to survive."

I think there's some references to Inara and Jewel Staite on their first episode too.

Here's the Heroes vs Firefly podcast:

There's a bunch more Firefly referrences throughout the others.

I find them really hard to compare, they're so different.

Gotta agree, it's and Apples/Oranges thing.

That said, Heroes is one of the best series currently on (first half of this season, not withstanding), but Firefly is one of the best series ever!

Yeah, I'm biased, but Firefly managed to develop characters I loved and cared about in just a handful of episodes, where most series take years to accomplish that, and frankly, some never do. Enterprise and Voyager went on for years, and I don't care about any of those characters!

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

I'm not gonna yack on about they are 2 completely different types of shows or anything I'm just gonna lay it down.

Heroes I found slow to get into (still is frankly) but after a while became interesting enough to keep me coming back every week (mostly cause of Clare bear) prob not a program I could watch repeatedly but like nonetheless - 8/10, Firefly is a show I instantly clicked with with, I need Firefly to actually live but I had to die about a million times before I saw the next episode (in my case either 1min or 2min in between episodes) and is fav show of all time (no thing comes remotely close) and I obsess over it - 1000/10.

Heroes is good Firefly is the best, there are many other tv shows I'd rather much watch before Heroes, which areCowboy Bebop, Chuck, Odyssey 5, NCIS, TOrchwood, & LOST.

Heroes is about a bunch of strangers trying to save the world; Firefly is about a bunch of 'friends' trying to save themselves.

Heroes depends on a good, mysterious storyline to keep poeple entertained; Firefly is far deeper, far more personal and easier to relate to.

If a Hero died, I would miss the power, not the person possessing it. Whereas if a Big Damn Hero died, it would be the person I would miss and the sense of loss is far greater. Heroes die to keep the storyline interesting; BDH's are the storyline, and they are all irreplacable.

Heroes is good; Firefly is brilliant.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I enjoy Heroes, but for the story-line.

Sadly enough, this is what Television wants. To be honest, I'm surprised Heroes is doing as well as it is, because it does require some level of thinking to enjoy. But what about the shows that have actually forced you to think?

To think about what's right or wrong. To think about human nature, and how at any given time you could find yourself the good guy or the bad guy.

Those shows are canceled, or shortly will be. We all know the story of Firefly. Journeyman hasn't been picked up, and Jericho was saved by the skin of its teeth.

Just a side note, for those of you interested in saving Journeyman, there's http://www.savejourneyman.net.

I dunno. Part of the reason I like HEROES so much is because of the fact that it IS continuing. FIREFLY has only half a season, some comics and a movie to it's mythology. Everything else is pure speculation. And I think that speculation is becoming a little stagnant. I don't read as much fanfics as I used to since I find them retreading a lot of ground already covered. And personally I like watching something new, as opposed to the same eps on a continuous loop. I don't think I've even seen any of the episodes since around 05 when the movie came out.

But with HEROES, you know that it's going to be around for a while and that they've still only scratched at the surface of what it could be. And I can ID with HEROES a little more since it is set in our world present day. I like to think of HEROES as a neorealist version of X-MEN.

And anyone who says that they'd miss the power but not the character doesn't get the show. The fan roar over the death of D.L. was HUGE. And while it's cool to see Hiro teleport and bend "time ando space", the main reason that Hiro is the most liked character on the show is because of his personality. Of having a character who when he discovers his powers is actually psyched about it, instead of thinking it's a curse. And no matter how much evil and darkness he's faced, he still has his optimism about him and his never failing moral compass. When he sees Nathan in the last ep of season 2 (maybe?), he still yells "FLYING MAN!!" instead of just going "Hey, Nate how's it going."

HEROES biggest power is it's characterizations, not it's FX. Luckily, FIREFLY also has that same power.

But I also agree. Comparing the two is like apples/oranges. They're both cut from the same cloth, just sown and designed differently.
