I know the crew never unloaded it (at least we didn't SEE them do it) so, what happened to it?

I don't think that Mal would just toss something worth so much, but they couldn't find any buyers for it...

IDK, can anyone shed some light on this, or maybe anyone out there got any ideas for what could've happened to it?

Throughout the course of the season, it's about, what 6 or 8 months? Much has happened in between. No doubt they found a buyer. If Sapphron could, they could. They also mention the Laciter on the beginning episode of The Message; can't remember much of what they said though.

In the Message, Inara and Mal are talking about it, Mal says no one wants it... Inara says she knows people... Mal says he doesn't want to jeprodize (sp?) Inara's career over it... I'm guessing they eventually sold it off to someone in the 'verse, because it's never mentioned again (I believe).

By the way, it's spelled Lassiter.

Well, that was a loose end canonically. It figures in a fanfic of mine called Helper ( sunroomitem.asp?i=14603 ),which is kinda a Christmas story,, set after the BDM. I figure that Mal kept leaking the story thru his contacts, until word got around to somebody who wanted to buy it.

Indeed, it's "Lassiter," called "The Mexican" in earlier shooting scripts. Oddly enough, fireflywiki.org suggest for possible origin of the name a gold-digger called Harold Bell Lasseter. Another sign of their tragic space dementia is the reference to the name of one of the main characters of the popular western book "Riders of the Purple Sage" by Zane Grey. Well, the wiki is wrong. :) The Lassiter was so named in homage to Pixar's John Lassiter, for whom Joss has done much work.

@madrik: it's not Sapphron, btw, but Saffron.

In the Message, Mal thinks Womack is after then Lassiter at first, saying "theat was quick" to Zoe.
Can't remember the source, but after the end of the series (and after TLB), they fenced the Lassiter, and used the proceeds to buy the new Mule, and upgrade the Serenity cockpit with more blinky lighted switches for the BDM, as well as engine upgrades - then they must have a very dry spell because in BDM after Lilac Mal reminds Zoe they have a powerful need to eat this month, and need fuel and such.

Can't remember where I heard this, so consider it a rumor, but I think that's what the "Better Days" comic is about. I know the comic talks a lot about upgrading Serenity. I'm not certain that it was the Lasseter though.

My thoughts are that they were able to pawn it off on someone and for nowhere near it's worth.Just like in the pilot eps where Mal pulls the job for Badger then he,(Badger) wants nothing to do with it.The Earth-that-Was artifact was not only stolen but there's a pretty good description of the party of criminals involved. Most of,if not all, the high-bid partners that were in line to buy the stolen goodie more than likely pulled out.Mal and crew decided to get rid of the thing before the heat of holding onto it got hotter. I think that the source is in one of the companion books for the show.

Didn't they mention in the novelization of the movie that it was fenced to buy the new mule and some ship upgrades?

Oh I hope it's true that they cover it in the Better Days comics. I always did sorta wonder what happened to it. Especially considering the crew had fallen on such hard times before Serenity and it when we last we left them it sure seemed like the were headed in the other direction with the Lassiter in hand and all.

Or, it could have been from the novel. Thanks, bobecc!

It is definitely stated in Keith DeCandido's novelization of Serenity that they sold the Lassiter and bought the mule (I don't remember the cockpit upgrades).

I aim to misbehave!
