While searching these boards, other boards, and the Net in general for ideas -- any ideas -- to help bring about a Serenity sequel, I stumbled upon this on Wikipedia:
Quote:

On June 23, 2006 a number of fans organized and spread word of "Serenity Day", on which all fans were proposed to purchase a copy of Serenity in an attempt to convince Universal that a sequel would be profitable. The significance of this day was that June 23, 2006 was the one-year anniversary of the third and final advance screening of Serenity prior to its release, as well as Joss Whedon's birthday. The impact of the event could be seen from Serenity reaching #2 in the Amazon DVD Charts.[95]the highest ranking the DVD had reached since January 16, 2006.[96]

I propose we do it again.

The original Serenity Day (June 23, 2006), where fans bought copies of the Serenity DVD, drove sales of the original DVD, and may have helped create the demand for the Serenity Collector's Edition DVD. Since release of the CE DVD, Joss Whedon has stated that any hopes of a Serenity sequel most likely lie with sales of the CE DVD.

On Amazon, the CE DVD sells for $19.99. I personally already have a copy, but I would also certainly be willing to buy at least one more copy as part of a planned, coordinated, well-timed effort to literally wipe the shelves clean of all CE DVDs, and prove conclusively that there is demand for more of this 'verse.

The timing is really good right now, with the upcoming Firefly run on Universal HD. That can bring more fans into the fold, and help raise awareness and additional DVD sales.

We need a plan, and this is the first one I feel might actually make a difference. So my question is simple: Who here would join with me, on a pre-determined and coordinated day, and purchase a copy of the CE DVD?

Let's see a show of hands, and dollars, and make Universal see that there's more than enough reason to bring back our 'verse. If people here like this idea, I propose the following:

ACTION ITEMS:

-- select a date for Serenity Day 2008, to tie in with the Firefly run on UnivHD
-- create web banners and text links promoting Serenity Day 2008
-- link everything to a web page/site promoting Serenity Day 2008
-- optimize the above site for Google

The domain "serenityday2008.com" is currently available. I am one step away from buying it. Once bought, I'll start creating the web page to promote this event. I just need to know the following first: Is this a good plan? Will people here come on board?

Comments, please!

EDIT: "serenityday2008.com" is now mine (and thus ours), so we've got the URL.

Well , if there'll be 'whores' , I'm in !

I've bought 5 copies of the CE DVD already , but if it'll get us some more Serenity , I'll buy 5 more...

I bought 8 copies of the original DVD release , also , and saw Serenity at least that many times while it was in the cinemas...Just happy to be doin' good works...

Maybe we should cross-promote , too , by pledging to see 'Cowboys & Aliens', a 'Versal release...While I personally don't NEED no " stinkin' aliens " , it is a genre-related 'Space Western' , of a sort...

What if we bought another ad in Daily Variety where we pledge support for this 'Versal release ? Should oughta get us some notice , doncha think ?

" In search of 'Serenity' , Browncoats create 'viral' campaign for new Universal
release... "... Send it off to Ron Howard...

Good works, indeed!

As for another Variety ad, do we know if the first one was as effective as sales of the Firefly DVDs in bringing about Serenity BDM? If Firefly DVD sales are what truly fueled the BDM, I'd say we focus our money on pushing the CE DVD. (Plus, let's face it, if all of the sudden the CE DVD jumps up to a top spot on Amazon, that will get noticed by the suits. They'll know both that we're still active, and still willing to spend money, on our beloved 'verse.)

My vote still goe to the CE DVD sales push. I say we wipe them out of all existing stock!

Shiny!

OK, I think there are two action items that need worked on right now:

-- choosing a date
-- compiling a list of site to promote this on

Regarding the date, I'm thinking we could coordinate it following the run on Firefly on Universal HD (I'm trying to get that schedule). Between now and then, let's try to compile as comprehensive a list as possible of sites that would be friendly to this promotion.

I'm still way new to this 'verse (not even a month), so I will really appreciate suggestions on finding other websites and forums where Browncoats hang out, to better promote Serenity Day 2008!

Here's another variation , for brainstormin'...(Where's River when we need her ?)

The 'Serenity Day' that you propose falls in coincidence with the " Can't Stop The Serenity " screenings that will happen again this year...

What say you join that email list , and field some ideas there...Meanwhile , write to Universal for promo material (posters , etc.) for Cowboys & Aliens , to be freely given out at the Serenity screenings...Those of us who can spare a little coin can donate some Serenity CE DVD's to be used as door prizes , and everyone else tries to hit the target date you suggested for the big bump at Amazon...

That'll give us a build-up prior to the screenings , plus a big spike on Serenity Day...

Meanwhile , since Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos knows about us , and even has his own rocket ship(s) and space program , perhaps he'd be willing to donate to the CSTS cause some SERENITY CE DVD's , maybe even some Firefly Boxsets , as some bonus items this year...Heck , he's got all the desirable books about the 'Verse , too...We could send a 'wish list' of suggestions to him...

Meanwhile , I have a friend who can put 'our ad' out in ' the black ' , and into the news , for less than the Variety ad would cost . A lot less...

Don't look at me. I can't keep track of her when she's NOT incorporeally possessing a spaceship.

And speaking of said spaceship:

THIS IS AWESOME!

I remember being part of the original Serenity Day and as far as I'm concerned, that was the most active I'd even seen this site. It'd be awesome to have another Serenity Day now that we have something new to buy.

The last Serenity Day was on June 23rd to coincide with Joss's birthday, the screening, and the Can't Stop the Serenity screenings. In fact, we helped make the screenings a little bigger, but I must say that most of the work was by those who coordinated it.

That being said, don't make the same mistake we did last time. Do not step on the toes of theonetrueb!x and the CSTS screenings. Those are for charity and not to get another movie. If you want to do this on the same day, ask him. That being said, if you want to help promote the CSTS screenings, thats great, just make sure people know they are for charity and not another movie.

Keep the ideas coming. Last time we had letters, fliers, the Browncoat Singal Corps was created. It was amazing to see Browncoats active and fired up again to get a new movie.

As was our motto in 2006...
We aim to misbehave.

Very, very good point.

Much as we all want a Serenity sequel, the last thing I would want -- and I believe any of us would want -- is to somehow interfere with CSTS.

I agree someone should be asked about this; when you say, "Ask him," do you mean JW? Or would it be best to approach the heads of Equality Now?

Either way, I would pursue a cross-promotion approach: I would explain that SD08 aims to promote DVD sales on 062308, and that in our promotion we would also be promoting the 2008 CSTS screenings. I would then say something like:

Quote:

While we see the potential for cross-promotion possibly -- hopefully -- bringing more people to the CSTS screenings, and thus more people and funds to your cause, we do not wish to "dilute" or otherwise interfere with your charity function in any way. We claim no affiliation; we ask for no cross-promotion from your organization to our cause.

We ask only for your opinion: Do you feel that promoting SD08 on June 23, 2008 will be beneficial, or detrimental to your cause? We respect your opinion on this, and, as true Browncoats, we will move SD08 to another date, if you would so prefer.

If you do, though, feel that the cross-promotion of same-day SD08 and CSTS can be beneficial to your organization, please let us know that as well. We will be happy to add links to CSTS in our promotional materials.

Some such thing. Again, that would be sent to -- most likely -- the head of Equality Now. Thoughts?

Nice catch, regardless!

"Ask him"

That is kind of vague now that you mention it.

By that I meant the guys at CSTS. I think the head person is (or at least was) theonetruebix. There was a butting of heads last time that we should try to avoid.

There are Browncoats all around the 'Verse who would be very happy to pitch in on this idea, I'm sure.

It's a good idea! We need a push to buy the DVD's, it's the language Universal understands.

Some suggestions though...
Don't do it on the June 23rd date, unless you have permission from the current runner of CSTS. You can probably find what you need to know about CSTS ( Can't Stop the Serenity )and what they're about at www.cantstoptheserenity.com

Here's their contact page:

http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/contact.html

Another day might be better and I'm sure folks would be amenable to whatever is decided.

DO get input from TDBrown who runs the Operation Signal Boost bunch ( I'm a member of that crew ), he and our crew will be most helpful and we'll help you spread the word.

The Browncoat Signal Corps ( what's left of it ) is at your service. We'll do the best we can to spread the word.

I just went back through some of the old forums to look at the past Serenity Day ideas and want not and it reminded me of something I actually wanted to forget. The last time we tried planning a Serenity Day we caused a lot of discontent on this site and created more than one faction. We stepped on the toes of the Can't Stop the Serenity people and people accidentally thought that those screenings were to get a new movie and not the CHARITY they were really for. That was bad. Then we had the people who wanted to beg for a new movie, when the real idea was to thank Universal for the movie we got. Let's be honest, due to Joss never giving up we're pretty lucky we got the BDM at all. The begging for a movie by fans didn't do a whole lot.

I'm just saying these things to prevent the rift that was caused last time. We Browncoats don't need that. We are such a large group we could do so much. At what point do we say we're thankful for what we have, and if we get more than that's awesome. In the meantime, we can use this community to do something worth doing.

The CSTS people have it right. We are a community who will unite together over something we all love and help people because we can. We are all willing to spend some money on another DVD so we can get another movie. At what point is that selfish? At what point do we decide to put all this energy towards something good?

Nathan Fillion has his Kids Need To Read Charity that we could easily create support for and turn into a large charity. And, there are plenty of other charities out there. We all seem to love film, we could create our own Scholarship fund for up and coming filmmakers who can't afford college. We can donate books and DVD's to libraries (like some of us already do). We are a force that can do so much, yet we all come to this site and it always comes back to the same thing, we all want more. Whether or not we get more Serenity is really not in our control anymore. Joss created us and united us as an army of Browncoats. What we do next is our call.

We CAN help the helpless.

Being someone involved with KNTR I run the risk of being obvious here, but huzzah! for the suggestions Dewrastler!

Having a day where we promote buying the DVD in and of itself isn't a bad idea, it's a good idea...but having it interfere with any of our charity activities is not good, because we don't want to distract energy or money from those things.

Picking the day the movie came out ( Sereniversary ), or the day the DVD came out for a push to buy it is a much better thing.

But ultimately, IMHO, we're better off to work to recruit new Browncoats by sharing the 'Verse. By staying in the public eye in the best way possible, not as a fandom who "wants more", but as a fandom that does good works. By buying as much official merchandise as we can afford ( including the CE!! ) and by guerrilla marketing ( see 11th Hours bookmark post). By basically doing what we've been doing. By staying a community that does something worthwhile with the energy and focus that we have.

With KNTR something that folks can do every day, with the screenings in June coming up quickly and needing participation and money from all of us, with local shindigs and fun to plan, we really have quite a bit to keep us busy.

All that being said, I'm up for adding a CE buying day to my calendar and happy to do so. :-)

There are two dates having to do with the BDM that would work well for this project:

BDCE Day, August 18th, the Release date for the Collector's Edition, and

Sereniversary Day, Sept 30th, which is the Anniversary of Serenity's Initial Release.

The first date is the most appropriate, and no other Charity lays "claim" to that date. It would give you plenty of time to organize all this and coordinate with local BC Groups.

The second date is host to quite a few local Charity events, such as the annual Sereniversary Screening that I sponsor in Indiana. My particular event helps a local Women's Shelter. You could do it on this date, perhaps tying it into other "Grassroots" efforts.

Just a few ideas so you can be successful

I'm in.
I went ape over the last Serenity Day. I bought 4 copies of the movie, 4 copies of the series, a bunch of bumper stickers, T-shirts and 12 coffe mugs with some of my favorite sayings from the show.
I'm in the middle of watching the series again right now, and it stills makes me spittin' mad as to how they could have cancelled it. It is by far, the best gorram show on TV - ever.
So, you tell me the date, and I will spend the money!

I'm still holdin', 'til Firefly gets back.

To all those here who have pledged their support, offered their encouragement, and contributed invaluable suggestions, I am pleased to say that this effort is officially a Go.

Announcing the Serenity Day 2008 Official Thread

In an effort to better organize SD08, to better make use of the time and energies of those offering their help and suggestions, and to better be noticed by TPTB at Universal, an official pinned thread has been created on the Universal HD Firefly boards:

http://boards.nbcuni.com/universalHD/index.php?showtopic=800

My first order of business on existing threads, such as this, is as follows:

-- announce the establishment of the official pinned thread; link
-- compile all of the suggestions for charities posted in existing threads
-- add any other suggestions from previous threads not related to SD08 event date (picked), charities (see last point), and online "home base" for this effort (picked; see above link)

I thank everyone for their excellent suggestions. Because of you, we've already:

-- turned this from a simple DVD sale push into a combo charity event
-- picked a date
-- selected an online base of operations

I am especially grateful for those who helped to pick a date, and assure that SD08 does not, in any way, conflict with other events in the 'verse (particularly pure charity events such as CSTS).

I look forward to your continued participation in the new thread! Much, much more information is available, right now, in my intro message on the Official Thread:

I'd debated that a lot before choosing the URL, and decided to go with a date-specific URL to avoid any confusion with the original Serenity Day (2006). I agree that this will limit the URL for general purpose promotion, but assuming we have a valid need for general purpose promotion in 2009, that's a problem I'll gladly face!
