Okay, while back to back re-watchign the commentary on OIS and then watching the episode immediately afterwards I picked up on something.

Joss mentions at one point that he shot something "NYPD Blue" style. Therefore, he must be at least an occasional watcher.

In River's psychic episodes she picks up on things Simon says later in the episode and something Jayne said in a prior episode. But Book says "I don't give half a hump if you are innocent."

Now, as any regular NYPD Blue watcher will tell you the word "hump" is Andy Sipowicz's favorite word. It's a noun, it's a verb, it's an all uses coarse expression. If Joss wanted to convey harsh language from Book's past, and assuming Book was a cop, might he not use an uncommon expression from a cop show? This would also explain how come Book knows so much about crime.

Just my crackpot theory.

The more I get to know people the more I like my dogs.

I think "hump" is just a common phrase, I don't think it has any specific "cop" inference. I believe it is at the beginning of Serenity, part 1 where Wash says something along the lines of, "...oh, cap'n, were humped hard..." when the Alliance ship comes upon them whilst they are scavenging. It appears to just be a synonym for the "f" word.

(...looks around the boards for confirmation from someone...anyone?)

However, I do believe Book was an authority figure in his past, as opposed to an actual criminal. Although I glanced on the thought that the "abbey" he was in was a jail, I don't really think that was the case. At least, I don't WANT to think it. Anyway, my point being, I don't think he knows so much about crime because he was a criminal. I agree with you that he was a cop or in the military or some such. Whew! Got that out finally.

I also think it was interesting that Morena said both Book and Inara's past will be explored in the film as I dont think they would have time in the movie to explore Books past as well as Inaras unless his is connected to Rivers.

i think they used humped in the same sense as screwed, because in Serenity when they are doing the salvage and Wash says that an Alliance cruiser is coming up Jayne says "If they catch us we're humped" then later when the Alliance cruiser notices Serenity Wash says "Captain! We're humped!"

More than one character DOES use the phrase "humped" on more than one occasion... typically as a synonym for "screwed." (As in, "We Are ____")

Whereas I do believe Book being a former cop is a possibility ("by the book." ... GET IT??!) ... remember the time Book got shot? The reaction of the Allican Officer was almost scary. "Get this man a medic RIGHT NOW." Like Book was a former General, or the father of one or something.

Anyway, the reaction was too severe for Book to be JUST a cop. In my opinion, anyway. I've been wrong before.

I think Quicks on the right track, Books either a high ranking cop, or a fed or perhaps he could be connected to Blue Sun.

If you watch the DVD extras, theres reference to Blue Sun being a shady "Shadow Government" type organisation, controlling the feds from behind the scenes. And that if the series continued we would've seen more of them.

Thats my idea anyway.

I like to think of "Blue Sun" as sort of like Omni-Consumer Products (OCP) in "RoboCop."

Except, y'know, they're a little more hands on in the killing people division.

No, I don't think I intended that pun.

I can easily see Book being a high ranking military intelligence officer, either chin deep in black projects or something like an Alliance military version of the FBI/CIA. This feels more right to me than law enforcement or the "standard" military. It's good to know that time will tell...

We've been given no reason not to trust Book... though if they pull that off, that's a KickInTheHead of "Fight Club" proportions. Eeeeevil... but in this case, unlikely.

Ex high-ranking official, not necessarily military... (though he knows how to hold a gun).

Maybe retired from Blue Sun under cloudy circumstances? ;)

Or, just maybe, he grew tired of his decadent "BLue Sun" lifestyle and left to find solace as a lowley Shepherd?

No worries, friend. The "abbey" in question is Bathgate Abbey, and the entire crew stops by there on the way to Ariel. Just check out that episode, and notice where Mal suggests to Jayne that he might want to stay at the Abbey with Book next time they come to the core.

It might not be a real Abbey, but it's close enough to one that the crew didn't catch on. I think it's a real one ... perhaps with a twist.

I know that the casting sheet for the movie has as the main antagonist a shadowy and scary "agent" for the Alliance. I think Book used to be one of those, got an attack of conscience at some of the things the job forced him to do (or found out too much about what Blue Sun is up to), and did indeed chuck it all in and become a man of God.
