I don't know if there has already been a thread about this, but I'm wondering what happens to the Operative after he has his discussion with Mal at the end of Serenity.

In Les Miserables, there's a character similar to the Operative, whose main goal in life is to catch this Jean Valjean guy (because Valjean broke into someone's house and stole bread).

In the end, Javert does find Valjean and Valjean has the option to kill Javert. But he doesn't.

So, after Javert fails, he realizes that all he has believed in is wrong--Vajlean is actually a good guy. So then Javert stops working for the police then commits suicide by jumping off a bridge.

One day I was talking to a friend of mine, saying something like "I hope the Operative doesn't go jump off a bridge".

What do you think would happen to him after Serenity? I think optimistically(?) that he will go on living, from day to day, like Mal was after losing the war.

In the Official Visual Companion book, there's a bit of dialogue that wasn't in the movie, that makes me think that.

Quote:

THE OPERATIVE: "Serenity". You lost everything in that battle. Everything you had, everything you were... how did you go on?

Mal hits the button to close the inner doors, steps inside as they slide together. Glances at the Operative, unimpressed.

MAL: You still standing there when the engine starts, you never will figure it out.

The Operative watches the door shut. A moment, and he goes

Maybe he seems to be wanting to commit suicide, but hopefully he would listen to what Mal said, and live on.

Become a Shepherd, travel the worthy path. But avoid Mal.

I wouldn't want to be the folks who sent the Operative out, when he decided that perhaps you weren't the best people to be working for...

Someone once wrote a short noir-ish thing that had the Operative as a down-at-heel private 'tec, which was nice. (I alway thought there was touch of Hammett in the naming.)

What do you do when you finally wake up after sleeping all your life?. You live.

"Battle of Serenity, Mal. Besides Zoe here, how many-" "I'm talkin at you! How many men in your platoon came out of their alive".

He'd probably choose a humble path. Anything from a farmer to a Shepard.
