Wash's tragic end has made New York Entertainment Magazine's list of top ten ignoble deaths for fictional characters. Here's the link:

However, if you read carefully, I think the writer made a slight mistake in the details. You'll see what I mean.

Call me anal, but there are people coming here that haven't seen the BDM yet, so the headline is kinda spoiler-ish.

Also, I see what you mean, because it wasn't a grappling hook, it was a telephone pole.

THESOMNAMBULIST

I can't work out if the writer is making a critisicm on the part of the creators as to their chosen method of offing the characters, or wether they are just stating: "It's an ignoble death"

Steve Buscemi's death in the Big Lebowski is meant to be ignoble. That's the very point of that part of the film, but of all those characters in general. It's saying just how matter of fact these guys take their lives to be, and how almost mundane dying is... I mean look what happens when they scatter his ashes!

You guys sure Wash weren't killed by a harpoon? That's what I assumed it was.

Also, I like the #1 most ignoble death...

Has there ever, in TV or film history, been less honorable death than Jesus's in The Passion of the Christ? Sure, that's how he met his end in the Bible, but doesn't our Lord and savior deserve better than being whipped, spat on, scourged, mocked, and flayed in a semi-offensive, possibly anti-Semitic piece of religious torture porn? Mel Gibson financed Passion with his own $50 million — for that sort of money, he could've had Jesus die in a light-saber battle with Pontius Pilate, or be eaten by a Transformer or velociraptor. Now that would've been a death for our sins.

Who weeps for her only son;
There's a grave on the Pabeng River,
A grave that the Burmans shun;
And there's Subadar Prag Tewarri
Who tells how the work was done.

STAPLES

What about Book?!

I know that Wash is an amazing character, and he will be sorely missed, but I think Book got the shaft in Serenity. He was in it for 2 SCENES, and then he just croaks!

A character with clearly MANY layers to be peeled back, and he just dies - I mean, at least Wash did what every pilot dreams of doing before he died (piloting through that battle, making it to the other side, helping his family stay safe... :_( ...). Anyway, Wash's death pissed people off because they weren't expecting it - Book's was given several minutes to brace for the inevitable...But I still think it's worth a mention...

Ditto. Hope no one will mind if I edit the display headline.

You may say I'm a dreamer. But I'm not the only one.

Book already had the "last words"-death; if Wash would have had a heart-breaking last conversation with Zoe, it would have been too much. Plus Josh wanted us to believe that he just might kill off all of the BDHs (and I believed it, so his vile tricks seem to work on me). He also totally caught the viewer off guard with that, kinda like when... (Buffy Spoiler ahead)

Select to view spoiler:

...Buffy just finds her mom dead on the couch - no monster killed her, she just died, because dying is what people do.

, just quicker. And just like the other BDHs didn't have time to say their goodbyes or linger, the viewer is rushed off the scene, too, which made it that much more, hm, traumatizing, in lack of a better word, because no one had time to digest what just happened.
As much as I love Wash, it was a brilliant move to have him die that way, and brilliantly delivered by Alan.

As a side note, in the book "Lord of the Onion Rings", a parody of... well, Lord of the Rings, obviously, Gandalf dies by tripping and impaling himself on his pointy shoes. Now THERE'S an ignoble death for you! (Although a prophecy earlier in the book tells him which page he's gonna die on.)
