I mentioned it to MSB but for those who haven't seen, machines these days offer flashy video screen bonuses and gratifying lights and sounds. Addiction: if I had money to throw away I'd throw it into the Star Wars machines. Funner than all get out.

I almost forgot. Some recommendations fpr ya Zeek. At lunchtime I will fet the menu of an AWESOME place with the best Philly CHeese Steak sandwhiches. I ended up tipping near fifty percent to the guys behind the counter.

Yeah, that good. Also there is a Paintball field in Vegas now that i can recommend if you arte interested. They have rentals and such so no worries.

Fun trip (but very tiring).

I think I probably argued the same thing when I was a teen...but now I love the classic. I loved some of them back then, too...but now I have an appreciation even for the ones that I didn't like.

Rugbug, broken horse? What's broken about it? Does it bark instead of whinney? Is whinney the sound a horse makes? Sounds more like a young girl's name from an old tv show. Still that's the only horse noise I can think of.

FREELANCERTEX, that should be obvious. English teachers are all lazy. So, they pick old books that have been analyzed to death already. That way all they have to do is plagiarize someone else's work and they're done.

OK OK that's an exaggeration but at the same time it holds some truth to it. The classics are classics for a reason. They're well written and have a good message. Plus there is already usually an accepted analysis of the books. Therefore you don't learn one thing from one teacher and another for some other teacher. You also end up getting some culture out of it. If you're at a party and someone makes a Great Gatsby reference and you don't get it because your teacher liked Stephen T. Colbert's "I Am America and So Can You"

then you're left looking uneducated. So, go ahead and read the classics. They really aren't as bad as you might think.

Also, don't base your enjoyment of the book on the author's personal life. One of my favorite books is written by a jerk. It doesn't change that the book is really good.

I don't teach Hemmingway as I am not a huge fan. ...

But classics like To Kill a Mockingbird, Rebecca, etc are really wonderful and shouldn't be ignored:) But I do agree that new stuff ( for example Watson's go to Birmingham 1963 ) should also be included.

I'm not a big Hemingway fan. I also didn't much like The Scarlet Letter when I read it, but after some time passed and a re-read, I realized it's not nearly as awful as I though. Didn't really like 1984, or Call of the Wild or Animal Farm. But I'm glad I read them all.

I did enjoy Pride and Prejudice immensely: Jane Austen is my favorite author. To Kill a Mockingbird is my favorite book. Where would I be if I hadn't been forced to read those? I never would've read A Separate Peace. I think Fahrenheit 451 should be required reading.

Ah...books...I Loves them.

In other news: The horse has a tear in his right front lateral suspensory branch. This it be bad. This it be really bad for selling. He is on a 9 month re-hab program to get him back to where he was before injury. That means I don't get to ride him...or buy a new horse for minimum of those nine months. Well, that's an exaggeration. I will get to ride him for five minutes at a walk in about three months...and then gradually increase both time and speed. This news does not excite me as horse will be full of himself from standing around for three months. Please stayed tuned for details of my funeral.

Not going to quote anyone, but replying to several posts (I think):

First of all, I'm going to be displeased with someone's statement, about learning the same things from different teachers. First of all, why would two teachers in a row teach the same book? And second of all, why wouldn't you want a different take on books? Like one way to analyze the book is the only, right way, and there can't possibly be another take on the book that isn't wrong? That's what that statement sounded to me.

And, tex, my personal theory why the classics are classics is because A- they're old, and thus a piece of history, and B- these books (poems, plays, etc.) were written at a time when no-one wrote anything, and so were automatically "great" because people at that time didn't have anything to compare those works with, and people today stuck to the sterio-type, and didn't bother to think of how good it would be consitered if someone tried to send it in today, when there's alot of good work out there for the old piece to be compared to.

I, personally, think that we should leave those "classics" to those studying past literature. I'm not slamming any of them (except Longfellow and Shakespeare

)

Actually, I kinda have questions as to why we have to take so much English nowadays. I understand the need to read and write, it's eccential, but that's already covered in grade school, and in high school it's mainly reading whatever works, when unless you're studying to be a literary analist of something, it's not going to do you alot of good. And we don't get much writing, and I'm pretty dang sure that there are more people that want to become editors than literary analists.

Aw, but reading is another form of experiencing. It broadens your outlook, allows you to sympathize, makes you question what you 'know' about the world by adding a different perspective. For example, you will probably never experience the humility of being branded an adulterer for all to see, but you can read one person's take on what that might be like. Then when you experience being an outcast, you will relate and possibly understand it more fully.

Reading enriches our knowledge of not only history and interpersonal relationships, but also vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar, etc.

(Egads, MSB. I can't believe I forget Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre. I LOVED Jane Eyre. I also adored Anna Karenina and The Brothers Karamozov. I went through a Russian literature phase that ended with me not being able to get through The Idiot, but I do still love Doestevksy.)

I'm not saying in a row like one grade to the next in the same school. I'm saying high schools across the nation more or less will teach you the same stuff about The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as they will anywhere else. Sure it won't be word for word and they won't necessarily emphasis the same parts, but more or less you'll learn the same stuff. Where if every teacher picked out their favorite books from all the books ever written then students would be getting some very different educations in literature.

I used to be an English teacher. A teacher should be able to explain why a work is important.

It also depends on the class that's being taught. Is it a survey course (or a high school course) where you're trying to get students to begin to appreciate literature, or is it a high level course where you're exploring advancements within a time period or within a genre?

I always thought it was a mistake to teach something like "Death of a Salesman" or "Long Day's Journey into Night" in an introductory level course. Sure, they're great works, but how much depression do you want to throw on a new student?

there are a few older stories that i absolutely LOVE, like The Once and Future King by T.H. White, and despite what some people say about Sir Walter Scott, i find his writing style absolutely amazing (i wish i could write like that). but the problem is stories like that, and like Count of Monte Cristo, The American Captain, all those, aren't ever taught in schools. instead they teach john fucking steinbeck

all the "classics" that make me never want to read another book ever again (and that's saying a LOT because i LOVE to read. i read three books at a time cuz i'm afraid i'll never have time to read all the books i WANT to read) and the classics class i took last semester was the same way, we were reading all this old shit that was boring as HELL. thank GOD we read Hamlet, cuz otherwise i would've strapped myself to a catapult and hurled myself into the nearest volcano.
And yeah, the teachers explain why THEY like the book and why every other analyst out there thinks it's an important work, but times have LONG since changed since all those stories were first considered classics. why can't the teaching of literature evolve with the type of story that's being written NOW?
