Well, shit...a trilogy is better than nothing, but bringing it back to tv would be better

Don't get me wrong, I LOOOOOOVE the idea of a trilogy movie, but a continued TV series would be so much better--give us something to look forward to week to week, more room to develop stories and characters, give us something to dicuss at length every week...

But I DO love a trilogy...

Actually that quote or whatever is supposedly wrong. Some people who were actually there posted that Nathan said that a Firefly return series won't happen for a long due to contract agreements. Most likely FOX still owns the TV rights and won't give them up and Joss and no one else wants to work for the original company that screwed them over. But contract run out eventually so the possibility that is still there. Just not in the distant future.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

well, I don't hate the idea of future movies,
the most important thing (IMO) is that Joss be allowed the freedom to do what he wants,
to tell the stories he wants to tell...
fact is that might never be able to happen on network television (Fox isn't the only channel where the suits like to interfer with the creative end of things)...
And cable TV usually won't put up the $ needed anyway (even if Fox didn't own the rights)...

So probably the only place Joss will have the freedom to do what he wants is on the big screen.

But you never know, if the movie is successful, and Fox bows and scrapes and throws a boat load of money at Joss' feet, then it might return to TV...

I pray... we all pray... that FOX succumbs and does what Joss tells em to... only then will Earth be safe...

HELL'S KITTEN

Now, I'm not one to be an optimist, but I thought I'd bring up a similar situation in hopes of "keeping the dream alive," as They say.

Dunno if you've seen the "X-Men" movie, but as has been pointed out in the "Andromeda & Mutant X have been cancelled!" thread, Mutant X was a spin-off of the X-Men franchise. A pathetic and sad spin-off, but a spin-off nonetheless.

Now, good ol'Marvel Comics had an Agreement / Contract / Call-It-What-You-Will with the company that picked up the TV rights. I don't recall the specifics, so pardon me if my facts are wobbly; I got this info from one of Marvel's writers a while ago. Anyhow, the Agreement was something along the lines of: The TV Rights Owners would not create, produce or air any spin-off show related to the X-Men for a period of no less than 5 (or whatever) years. The point of this was to milk every penny outta the movie they could before handing the public another dose of mutants. However, with all the money that the X-Men movie & subsequent merchandise generated, the TV Rights Owners got greedy and jumped the gun, producing Mutant X waaaay ahead of their Agreement time lines. 'Course, Marvel put up a big stink with threats of dragging in the law-talkin-guys, but enough money exchanged companies to quiet them down.

So, I guess my point to this dull little tale is that, with enough public interest - only the kind that translates directly into actual and potential profits, of course - contracts are "easily" negociated away. So, too, could this happen with Firefly. Y'never know.

I wasn't expecting to see Firefly on TV again anyway so I'm not really all that suprised disappointed but not suprised. Even if the BDM makes a lot of money and they're able to sell Firefly as a TV show again how are they going to get all of the actors to come back to a TV show when they could work for a few months at a time and make more money on a movie.

SKYDANCE

How the hell can they blow $35+ million on a film? I thought this was going to be a drama, not a space combat epic ...

Did it take them $10m to make the pilot? Was it 2 hours? Was it good? Are they using the same cast?

*shakes his head in confusion*

They'll need to make special effects and sets that can stand up to scrutiny on the big screen and no doubt the studio will want to use plenty of effects to attract viewers. Plus they'll need to pay actors other than the ones original ones which could possibly include a big name to attract viewers.

Yeah, that's definatly false info - Joss has said many a time that one of the main purposes of this film is a springboard for a new series.

I'm sure the "rest ofthe story" is that what he's sayng is that there's no TV series until Universal's contract for features ends or is allowed to lapse. if the movie is successful enough to go the whole three films then the contract is done and Joss can pedle his wares to TV (and given his passion for Firefly I doubt he'd let it go just because he doesn't want to work with Fox again) and if they aren't successful enough to provoke sequels then he can get back to TV that much quicker as Universal will lose interest.

"Why we still discussin' this?"

While I don't have a source for this stat, I've read that in general movie equipment(cameras, cameramen, etc) costs about 3x what TV stuff costs, in addition to even the excessively good firefly CGI having to be improved to be movie quality.

Movies cost more, period.
