That's like reverse logic Friday. Friday should be an end to the work week not the start of it.

Can't help it. The hunter/gatherer side of me won't let me put down the trail mix. With a traditional diet comprised of mostly protein my body craves it on a daily basis.

Out for the day folks. Sorry I can't be around more. Gotta love actually working while at work.

Not so much a supervisor. It's the autism support and behavioral support. So basically a teacher has a student who is misbehaving and a problem. They try stuff and if it doesn't work, they call us and we go observe the kid and then help the teacher assess the kid's behavior and come up with ways to help fix the problem... it is a fun change of pace though:)

Mostly busy with weird pockets of down time..

Sort of like this place;)

I'm glad you get a different change of pace, MSB, and I'm even more glad that you like it

Okay, I need one of the smart teacher types in here to explain this to me (and keep in mind that my teach is a stupid petty b*tch). What is the practical use of studying Evangeline (Longfellow) and a basic bio of Longfellow? And for studying Romeo and Juliet? How is that going to help us get jobs? I mean, sure, it makes you look educated, but how does help you if you want to get a job as, say, a writer? And what is the point of English in high school, anyway? By that point, we all know how to speak, read and form letters. Studying literature is fine, but those should be optional courses, or you can go to a library! And we really need a writing workshop of some type in all English classes. As in, short story, novel, creative writing, not reports. What is the point in reports anyway, you're just paroting what someone else said, and that's not particularly helpful, unless you're putting together a database, but we're pulling our resources off databases anyway, so I'm missing the point of this big time.

Also, what is the point in "quickwrite journals", where she has a bunch of hypothetical situations (like "What would happen if you could walk on walls and ceilings?"), and you have to write out what you would do, or what you think would happen. Frankly, that makes me a little nervous. I can't see the point in having us do this, and I'm kinda worried about some counselors or someone wanting these, and putting them in our profiles, so they can analyze us from our writing. I've probably read 1984 too many times, and I know I'm paranoid, but this still creeps me out a little.

And, Mobbex- All nuts are awful, they're not good in anything or combined with anything, or made into anything. The babies are kinda sick, and I can't believe there's a market for them.

Ok the babies are icky..

the point of reading that is to expose yourself to beauty and one form of culture and so that you can have some frame of reference for the constant quotes from these and other works so you don't sound like an uneducated idiot.

Yeah... that's the point, I guess.

I agree with LF. Literature classes should be optional. And teachers could afford to put a little more emphasis on the technique of writing. Some guys I graduated high school with could barely piece a sentence together, I think there's a problem there.

I understand that, but see, even if everyone around you has been forced to read stuff that they don't like (Longfellow, Shakespeare, etc.), what are the odds that they're going to remember quotes and stuff if they didn't like it in the first place? And for those people that did like it, and quote it, you're likely to be like "oh, yeah, Shakespeare, I read him in high school and he was boring as heck". Makes you sound real classy, don't it? *this is sarcasm, don't take it seriously* And, if they like __ person's works and you don't, why do you want their respect in the first place?

And, exposing yourself to culture is fine, but that's part of the reason why there's libraries, and even if you do take a class (they really should be optional), you should be able to read, like, the first segment or so, and see if you like it, and if not, move on to something else. You can always tell if you're going to like a book from the first page (which is why I often spend hours in bookstores- I end up getting snared by the books), and literature shouldn't be any different then that.

And besides, it shouldn't matter if you can quote Longfellow of the top of your head if you truly aren't interested in him. It's like expecting every girl to have memorized the layout of the nearest mall. It's kind of a sterio-type for "educated people", and I don't see why it's really nessisary.

he doesnt know how to write. he's boring, repetitive, and fucking annoying. seriously, this story can be summed up as such:

a bunch of expatriates living in Europe as writers. they work, go to a cafe for lunch, go home, go out to a bar, get drunk, have a fight, go home, sleep it off, then wake up, go to work, go to a different cafe, go home, go to a different bar, get drunk, have a fight, go home, sleep it off, then start over.
and they do this in a different place every day from Paris, all the way to Pamplona (in Spain). that is the whole of the book.
and, when you read it, you realize it's not fiction at all, it's Hemingway's life in europe, he just gave the characters different names. srsly, thats all it is, a commentary on his sorry boring life in Europe. no definitive plot, no definitive story, just an autobiography in the form of a vignette.

granted, he does insert some cultural stuff of the day like racism (it was the 20's) and antisemitism (just before WW2, hence that bit) and the like, but still, it shouldnt be considered fiction, and its boring as hell. it makes me want to ressurrect hemingway, make him watch as i burn all of his works, then kill him again to make myself feel better.

And that says a lot, because i LOVE to READ. my singular requirement for my house when i get one, is that it have a library. floor to ceiling shelves full of books i can just read whenever i want to.

I have a library with floor to ceiling shelves! And although I do have Shakespeare on it, I have no Hemingway. Or Thomas Hardy. There is a depressing bastard for you. Single-handedly put me off studying English Lit at Uni and put me onto history instead. (I just wish Jude had stayed obscure, and that the madding crowd had stayed far away.)

Good stuff - T S Eliot, Shakespeare, Donne. Poetry and prose colliding. (Though in S's case, the humour has not travelled well...)

Longfellow is not a Brit thing, luckily. I managed to escape the Hemingway study, but got E M Forster instead (mostly sexual repression in the Age of Empire.)

The great thing is, one day, you no longer have to read these things, and you can choose not to do so. I personally have a worryingly large number of books with 'blood' or 'death' in the title, and some nicely random sci-fi (Neal Asher is mad as a bag of frogs) but I actually got back into reading Dickens after seeing the adaption of 'Bleak House' on telly.

With the report writing - Learning to put sentences together with precison, keeping your thoughts ordered and your message clear, is very important. If it helps, think of these guys as a 'what not to do' scenario. Because reading about whiny drunks who can't get laid because they depress everyone isn't my idea of fun either.

But I like quoting stuff, whether it's classical lit, pop culture or song lyrics. The plus side is, it's all jam when it comes to quizzes.

And the water chestnut is actually the bud of a water lily, one of the lotus family...

JEALOOOOOOOOOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like shakespeare, not all of his stuff, but some of it, much ado, and macbeth, and hamlet and the like.

I have no problem writing essays because I'm a really good writer (unlike most college freshmen I know how to string sentences together @_@), it's just that usually I don't have any trouble coming up with a topic, and this time it kicked my ass cuz I couldn't get past the depressing, repetitive, annoyingly whiny subject matter of Hemingway @_@ i was crying tears of blood reading him.

in any case, I killed him about five times over last night and buried him in the Gobi desert ^_^ anyone want the exact coordinates of his final resting place?
