GENERAL DISCUSSIONS

Maybe we, the collective fans, could buy the rights to Firefly from FOX

I know this sounds a little nuts and perhaps even impossible...

Suppose there are 250,000 fans around the world who would put up $50 each. That's 12.5 Million Dollars. Would FOX give up whatever rights they are holding on to for that? I dunno.

It would be easy to set up an escrow account that get's paid into by an online donate button. That escrow account could be specifically designed so it can only be used to offer to buy the rights from FOX. Or if FOX would agree to start the series back on up its own, we'd donate it to Equality Now on behalf of FOX, CSTS and Joss Whedon. That's positive pressure on FOX to look like good guys... If they continue to be purple-bellies and refuse either option, then the money could be used to help finance another BDM. Which, maybe Universal would be more apt to do if they didn't have to pay for 12.5 million of it...

Anyway, that's my Big Damn Idea. I've been thinking about for 3 days now and I had to get it out.

Zoe: Don't think its a good spot sir, she still has the advantage over us.
Mal: Everyone always does; that's what makes us special.

Well , we're known for that...

Impossible is only that which takes us a little longer...

Still , it's a goodly bit of coin...

12 point five Megabucks...Sounds like a lot , right ? In TV-Land , it is not so much...

I'd never discourage anyone's idea or their will for trying something , but , truthfully , that amount of coin would likely buy only about 5 or 6 new episodes of Firefly...

One problem is , we'd have to start over , from scratch , so Serenity sets could be built...

Now , we'd ALL LOVE to see 5 new episodes , right ?

But , we'd still have to bribe the Television rights away from the F-Network , too...

So , even if we had 25 Million dollars , it might not be enough , really .

Several different scenarios might be possible :

1. The F-Network sees the light , and decides that they'll be 'big people' and voluntarily give Joss a green light to do more Firefly , The Series .

2. The F-Network never sees the light , and decides to just let their Television option for more Firefly expire , but they decide that it's a great 'cash cow' that they'll be able to keep milking for DVD sales forever and ever .

3. Maybe there is a loophole because the F-Network owns 'broadcast TV' rights to Firefly , but not rights in another medium like a Premium Cable channel , a Mini-Series , Direct-To-DVD movies , or Internet distribution .

Scenarios 1 and 2 are not necessarily entirely mutually-exclusive , and Scenario 1 and 2 don't
necessarily exclude the 3rd option , either !

...More Firefly IS possible , and you should never believe otherwise , but it will probably not be Fan-financed via an escrow account...

That would just feed the lawyers , and when you feed 'em , they're even more like cockroaches , which means they just proliferate even faster...

Joss himself says that the reason we have Firefly (and SERENITY) at all is because we're people who
" believed unreasonably ".

Just keep believing , keep sharing the Love , keep feeling the Joy...

Sooner or later , more SHINY stuff WILL happen !

Hmmm , 'SHINY! HAPPENS'...That's a bumper sticker !

Anyways , every few months (or, weeks !) a new iteration of the " Let's buy the Rights and Finance Our Own Firefly " scenario comes to a fan site near you...That just means we all love Firefly...A LOT !

It's getting to be almost as common as the 'Nigerian Scam' , not that the Finance Firefly movement is a bad thing...

Do some creative Guerilla Marketing...Or , just buy some new 'Verse-related merchandise...It all helps !

I have thought about this also and think it's at least worth inquiring about. After that vampire show is donating all that blood, we should be able to do somethin pretty big.

Or find a way around it.

Who would have access and control over that money? Who would act as negotiator with Fox? How would that person be selected and why?
That type of money requires fiduciary oversight and management. A corporation or LLC company would have to be created and licensed. It gets even more complicated...ultimately best to leave it to Hollywood to figure it out one day....unless some individual multi-millionnaire steps up to assume the stewardship.

Okay, I'm a programmer, not a lawyer.. But the way I figured it, we create some sort of Non-Profit and the money is held in escrow such that NOONE has access to the money until the specified predefined conditions had been met to release it. Of course, all this would require legal assistance... Maybe there are a few browncoat lawyers out there who could team up to help out.

Yeah, it's a little Pie-in-the-sky... But its my Pie and since you can't take the Sky from me, I'll keep dreaming... even if that's all it is.

From what I have read, FOX owns the rights to future Firefly DVD sales. That's the main reason you wouldn't see SciFi\Universal do a direct to DVD movie.

Don't infer anything I didn't imply...I didn't say that it wasn't possible...Just that we probably wouldn't finance new Firefly by putting our coin in an escrow account , because that would just be a target for lawyers...Don't want to feed the lawyers...

I'd be the last to rain on anyone's dream of new Firefly...I want it as much as anyone , and probably even more , than a lot of folk...

From what I understand , Fox had a contractual right to Television broadcast of Firefly for 10 years...Supposing the contract was signed in 2002 , that puts us out to about 2012...Might be a long wait for a Train that don't come...

But , on the other hand , we do know that Joss Whedon is slated to produce a new Television series for Fox , when he's previously been on record saying that he wouldn't do that again...

What I infer from that is that , A) He's got a powerful need to eat , sometime this month ,

And/Or , B) He cut a sweet deal with a lot of pink chiffon and frilly edges...

By sweet deal , I mean , something involving more clout , more coin , more creative control , and dream of dreams , an exercisable option for MORE FIREFLY...

Someone is going to get us back to the 'Verse...My bet is that person can only be Joss Whedon , and the network to bring back Firefly will probably only be F*><...

That is , with 'TV' in its present form...But all entertainment media are changing , and many forms of media are migrating to the Ninny-Net...The Writers (WGA) strike was largely over 'getting paid' for Internet distribution of the writers' material...

So it may mean we'll watch when we want to , but it may be a pay-per-view model that tips the balance , and finances more Firefly...

NBC and the F-network have collaborated to create Hulu , and the advertisers are bringing revenue , so that could be a model for future distribution...Sooner or later , there'll be a 'Hulu-HD' , but with a viewer-pays-for-premium-content price tag...

There's a lot goes into the business , and a lot for us to think about...

Not again.

Every once in a while some new fans show up and make this proposal, and everytime it's proven it can't be done, because it's been tried, especially by one persn who's name escapes me. You aren't the first one to suggest this and you won't be the last. I applaud you your enthusiasm for the show but the facts are this is an impossibility. Look up the old threads to see for yourself.

Nice dream, but don't expect much.

Love your sentiments OTTB.

All I can add is Love the 'Verse, share it with as many people as possible, join fan sites and buy licensed merchandise and DVD's( Uni especially will look at things like that when they decided to do another movie) and I believe another movie an option easier to realize rather than a new series.

Penthos,

There are two entities invovled here.

Fox Television

20th Century Fox Production company.

Fox Television cancelled Firefly.

20th Century Fox Production company kept the sets up for Joss Whedon for six months while Joss tried to find another television/cable network to pick up the show. So 20th Century Fox Production company was willing and may still be willing for someone else to pick up the show. And they know how much money the Firefly DVDs bring in. Over $6,492,518 in 2007 alone. Figure USA only. And only when Firefly made it into the top 30 countdown.

Universal decided to make a movie. Joss thinks there is still a possibility of a that a straight to DVD release sequel to Serenity. http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/news.php?id=6846
Joss Whedon interview at Comic Con 2007

Joss is willing. The actors are willing. a studio has to realize there is more money to be made in the 'verse. And you know Fox and Universal may already realize this and are just waiting for the right time. Joss and the crew are getting more and more popular every day.

I realize it is mathematically possible for us fans to do this. Hollywood is not ready for this yet. Hollywood is actually scared of this. Someone already tried this and got contacted by someone in the know in Hollywood that this would actually be bad for Joss if fans did this. All the money collected was refunded.

The strike happened. Joss has now written/directed/produced his own webepisodes of his own stuff. http://drhorrible.com fansite http://doctorhorrible.net This is already filmed and a poster is already up on the website.

This is Joss's little experiment. Let's see if he puts a donate button up on his little experiment or if he goes with sponsors. Joss is the boss. Nathan is Our Captain.

Joss knows where we are. He and Nathan know how to reach us. Jewel (Kaylee) knows how to reach us.

WE DO NOT WANT TO RUIN THINGS FOR JOSS.

I guess it would be theoretically possible for Joss to start a SereniFly fund that we could (and damn sure WOULD) donate insane amounts of money to, but how would that make him look in Hollywood, "begging" for money from his fans so he can do his own stuff? Personally, I would consider that scenario to be exceptionally shiny, and gladly donate, but I figure it would stir up a lot of sh*t in the business. Which could of course be a good thing, but Hollywood is scared of new things.
Also, there's the legal factor.

We'll either resurrect FF with all the money we're spending on it like we did for years, or just get milked for a few more years without anything new happening whatsoever.
I'd naturally prefer the resurrection thing, but I fear we're being milked.

Exactly. That is why we can't do this on our own. We have to follow his lead. If he asks, we are here. If he doesn't, we don't do this on our own for fear of hurting Joss in Hollywood.

We hold til Mal gets back.

"Look at that chiseled jaw, huh?"

I think that while feasible it wouldn't be wise.

What would be more wise, more feasible is if the Browncoats put money into hiring the old crew for a meet or dinner, then paying for the dinner, putting them up in a shiny hotel. It would take a powerful will to get all of their schedules to match up, and we'd have to work it around a date in the farther future, probably a year or two from now, and raise a huge stink about it all over the known 'verse, then get every single Browncoat there. Everyone. All over the world. It would be about the same cost as you mentioned, the cool 12 million, but it would be more effective. I know that they know we all love them, but if they all saw, if they all experienced that love, what then? We could actually have a hot cheese table! I mean... expensive? Yes. Count on paying them at least a million each to come and stay for two days. Then travel, housing, food, it's expensive. But I think that it would say more to the world if we did something more along the lines of a "we support you, not FNet", because yes, by purchasing items we show we care, but that goes into the pockets of the networks, not into putting on our show.

Do a google search for "Ace Underhill". U don't even have to type "Firefly" in there. You'll see the biggest attempt I know of. A huge stink was raised, articles were written, interviews were done, Joss was contacted. ...and on and on and on and on...

Meant trying to buy the rights to the show wouldn't be wise; doable, yes. But definitely not wise. I'd rather get everyone together for a giant shindig, the biggest there ever was, than buy the rights to the show. It would mean more than anything else, and be more wise as well.

Ok, I am so glad that you posted this because what Ace was trying to do is completely different from what I had in mind...

Ace wanted to own the rights and produce the show on the internet with his own production company or whatever...

I wouldn't want the fans to own the rights. No way! My thought was that if we could obtain the rights from Fox we would immediately give them to Joss\Mutant Enemy... With the rights secured from Fox I believe that Joss would be able to get another Network to buy new episodes or direct-to-DVD movies just for the DVD sales revenue.

It would be easier if Joss knew how much money he needed to get the rights from Fox. Then he could put a donate button on Whedonesque.com and probably have the money within a year...

I didn't realize how big this really was as I love the series and the movie, but never looked into the fan base. The main idea was the same for what I was looking for. Here is what I have so far from the info on all the videos and what I could get here.

Joss has the ability to move the rights from the f-network, so we really don't need to worry about that. What we need to organize and prepair to show the incomming network how we feel.

I have read and seen that Joss and all the crew would be willing to do this again, but for me to act (and I would) I would need that in writing.

step one - there are two many sites spreading the browncoats up so it is hard to truely see our numbers. One site with a database that all the others go to for people to put in their first, last, and email. This would be a running database.

step two - Once the database reaches a certain amount, Joss would need to be contacted and a personal interview would need to be set for the purposed network. At this point we throw up the challenge. We get the extimated dollars of one season (which we would really know before hand). Then we make a deal in this challenge.

"If we can get X amount of dollars within 2 weeks you give us 2 seasons of firefly minimal. If we don't you won't here from us again"

Joss sets and account for us before the interview(this is not begging on his part, this is us wanting) and we fill it up. If there is enough of us out there wanting this we will make it, and plans can begin to start season 2.

I know I left details out, but this is getting long. Planning and timing are important as I would not go to the network knowing that we would loose. We would know the numbers before I got there.

This can easily be done if there is enough of us. I am a troubleshooter by profession and was taught that I can do anything I put my mind to. This can work. I will post a thread with better details and contact information once my research is complete.

The Enterprise show fans raised like a million or so dollars and then things went bad.

makton,

It is the fans raising money to TELL the Hollywood studios what to do that is scary to Hollywood. They do not want fans to tell them what to do. They do not want Directors to tell them what to do. They do not want writers to tell them what to do. They do not want actors to tell them what to do.

We do not want to scare Hollywood away from Joss and the actors.

Joss is experimenting outside the Hollywood studio system with Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. But at the same time, he is working within the studio system with Dollhouse. And all the actors are working within the studio system except for Nathan working with Joss on Doctor Horrible. Nathan has been in some independent films like Waitress and Trucker. Fox Searchlight picked up Waitress. So that is still in the studio system.

WHATEVER YOU DO DO NOT RUIN THINGS FOR JOSS AND THE ACTORS.

It would be nice if you would explain how things went bad. The idea is not as much the money as showing the amount to people wanting the show back. Also none of the collabrations you have stated show any chance or progress that another series would continue or that they are even working on it.

The current tactics being use (and I also employ) are really only seen by marketing specialists which already know what we are doing, and just count the tactics has more money for them without having to do a thing (this makes us look like suckers).

The action which I am looking into starting is a bit more direct and would interest the studios becuase of the way it would be accomplished and not the actual effect produced. People are always interested in making deals and the seeing challenges. I feel a studio seeing such determination in such a large scale group would embrace the challenge and enjoy the publicity which would come out of it, hence, bringing their ratings up.

I'm still gathering information regarding studio functions, costs, specific details I missed in the series and mechanics which would be used in the starting website. There is a lot to do which I'm still working out.

The fans are what gives shows their ratings and sends a studio is a certian direction. There is a difference between scaring and enlighting them. Lastly, were all the cast and crew of Enterprise behind all the fans? I believe they are for Firely.

I didn't explain because I can't remember what went wrong on fans paying to continue Enterprise.
People brought the issue up when the Firefly fan mentioned started collecting money for continuing Firefly.

# of fans that's okay. Especially since what I've read is that it is the money thing that is scary to Hollywood. Hollywood has plenty of money. The problem isn't a lack of money in Hollywood. The problem is that Hollywood doesn't think it will make enough return on an investment FAST enough on a product.

Universal probably thinks we are close to 70,000 fans because that is what the their original Serenity Browncoat board had when they turned it over to Gossi. And the UniversalHD board has only "We have 2,680 registered members".

I'm hoping the Serenity: Better Days comic books have some good numbers. That is the next thing that we will have sales figures for unless DVD sales get back on the lists.

When you are researching, could you find out how much it would cost to build a Serenity ship movie production set. In LA. And keep open for a couple of years. You know for web-episodes, weddings, shindigs, etc.

Umm..... I like that idea:) The property would be the most expensive being in LA, so another location might work better. Luckly the ship is not that big. I'll look into it. Thanks.

Didn't Joss say in response to a previous effort that he wouldn't work under those conditions - that he didn't want to work for thousands of bosses - and if fans raised the funds - that's how he'd feel... I'm sure someone who was around at the time can fill in the details.

Edit:
Not what I was looking for, but found this archive re: a previous effort.

I got lots of well thought out responses and flames for our fund-raising idea to re-light Firefly. It brought out a lot of bitterness in people that I simply did not expect. It also brought a lot of generosity and love I didn't fully expect either.

We stopped taking donations today, not because of the bitterness, but because of a television producer who got a hold of me and taught me a little more about the inside of the television world. It was an authentic perspective I was not aware of.

It's about not being an albatross around Joss' neck. A lot of decisions in Film/TV are made on an emotional level. We were approaching this entirely from a logical level (nerds that we are). It was made clear to me that a decision maker would react badly to fan's money being involved in the production no matter how it was presented.

So, after a night of tossing and turning, I woke up this morning and decided to close down the fund-riasing portion of our campaign before it got really big and impossible to stop. I just completed refunding everyone's money. I closed the account so no more money would come in.

We do have several other ideas to continue our campaign and help with DVD sales and marketing those numbers to the decision makers. Our campaign has just begun, now with an even stronger front. I hope to partner with other Browncoats in the 'verse to make this happen.

Again, thank you all for your input and support. Look for an update by early next week!

Talie,

Yes, that is it exactly. We are thinking logically. Logically, we could do this ourselves if it was only about money.

It is about Power. Control. Fear.

We don't want to scare Hollywood away from Joss and/or the actors. We don't want to scare Hollywood away from Firefly/Serenity. A studio could suddenly wake up and realize there is enough money to be made in the 'verse.

I'm mean like Joss is working in the same buildings as the Fox DVD production people. And Universal just bought up the rights to turn Dark Horse comics into movies and they own rights to Serenity and Dark Horse produced the Serenity: Better Days comics.

Joss is the first big show runner to do webepisodes on his own. A writer, director, and producer. Others have done it but are not as well known as Joss. Webepisodes aren't considered real TV. Doctor Horrible might just change that.

Did you know Nathan (Our Captain) Fillion just sold a pilot to ABC?

Again, this is not what I am proposing. I'm not talking about raising money to pay for the production of more Firefly. In fact, I'm not talking about the fans being involved in the "production" in any way. Frankly, I think that's a unworkable approach and I don't blame Joss for not wanting it.

All I am talking about is raising enough money to buy the rights from FOX and then immediately giving ownership of those rights to Joss\Mutant Enemy. Once that's done, the fans are out of it and its up to Joss and Mutant Enemy to get it going again. All I want is for Joss to have the rights to his own show and to do with it what he sees fit.

I realize that new things are happening... Joss is working with Fox again and there's the Dr Horrible webisode thing etc... But that doesn't change the fact that all FOX has to do is keep is repackaging old DVDs and we keep making them top DVD sellers for several weeks. Why in the world would FOX bother to buy the cow when the milk is free?

To me it sounds like this ship is running on hope and luck. You rely on luck and you wind up on the drift, remember? I would say that we give this new "relationship" between Joss and FOX some time to ferment and grow, but if nothing is in the wind by Serenity Day 2009, then we need to start aiming to misbehave.

Count on paying them at least a million each to come and stay for two days.

I am a SAG actor myself and special appearances are not that expensive... certainly not for a project that they all loved to work on. I am sure it would cost a little more than SAG day player rates, but it would not be even close to one million a day. Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts do not get 1 mil per day. Otherwise I agree that the dinner would be a smashing idea!

whether you keep the rights or give them to Joss - Joss is still going to feel like he has to keep the people who donated happy - regardless of who actually owns it, I think that's the problem - I wish I could remember where I read about his comments to that effect - it would probably express more clearly what I'm trying to say but can't remember the details of.

I admire your efforts, really I do - and I'm not one of those ppl that goes around saying give up it'll never happen - in fact - though i probaly shouldn't admit it pubically - I'm the one responsible for posting videoos of Alan and Jewel giving renewed hope by saying they themselves are still hopeful for a sequel to the BDM and I know their words aren't going to change anything, but I've seen the way they renewed people's hopes, and THATs why I posted them, too many people giving up ...

I do get where you're coming from, but I don't think that it's the plan that is going to work ....

I'll keep trying to find that post....

Obviously if Joss straight up said something to the effect of "if the fans bought the Firefly rights and gave them to me as a present without obligation, I would not want them," then I certainly would not endeavour to do so.

I'm stubborn though so I would have to see it or hear it for myself :)

You see, this post is exactly what you are say. Just hope something happends, but don't do anything and give that "free milk". This will not commit to anything new content, video wise. Now I know there is "Virtual Firefly" and various comics, but I'm not a reader and prefer to see the graphics and action. Likewise, I prefer to take action over hoping everything will work. I truely have never been so serious about anything else like this show, because I'm tired of the way the public is treated by these studios.

Now, I did state that I needed to do research. This means that Joss, and all the cast would need to be interested in my purposal before I do anything. If Joss doesn't like the idea, then fine. I did try though and that is better than being scared to ruffle feathers. Truely, Fox could sit on the rights knowning that we want them, just to keep that "free milk" going. This is why I feel the current tactics really don't work (Though I just brought the Collector's DVD and complete collection again today).

Help me out, I'm trying to gather as much information as I can. Past tactics, different costs and facts to what went right or wrong. Don't just tell me that this person doesn't want it, or that this didn't work in some way. I want details and actions taken. I prefer to here from the crew on their opinions and not from third party. Give me facts, and processes. Don't give me reasons why we can't. Can't is not in my nature.
