I don't know if this has been discussed already or not, but here goes....

What's Summer's ethnicity? She looks part asian to me, but does anyone know for sure? I looked around a bit on the web, but I couldn't find any answers.

I'm pretty sure both her parents are caucasian. Basing that off something I heard her say in an interview, not sure what precisely.

She looks part Asian or Pacific Islander to me as well, and I'm familiar with the look being half-Asian myself :). I was thinking part Hawaiian perhaps, based on her last name which does not sound entirely caucasian.

While she does appear to have some pacific islander, looks can deceive. My sister in law is half pacifc, half caucasian, so I can say from experience, it could be the case.

But I'm think I'm going to have to say she's mostly caucasion. Celtic structure, the slender form, the cheekbones, the overall shape of the face and eyes, with germanic complexion, hair and eyes. True germanics are brown all around, not the blond/blue of Hitler's Super Race. The fair hair and pale eyes thing is Norse.

So appearances aside, I think I have to agree with piratecat. Probably caucasian.

Oh, and her middle name is Lyn, not Ale.

Maybe, but looking at her colouration, I'd possibly guess at one caucasian parent, and one Hispanic or Mediterranian (Spanish/Italian/Greek) parent.

I've often thought that black-haired Irish people look vaguely Asian. And I think there are some similarities in traditional design motifs and musical riffs as well.

Could be coincidence. Could be the influence of a long-lost colony, one way or the other :)

I don't know what she is and I really don't care...I've seen some pics of her that are truly amazing...all dolled up and looking like a movie star....My opinion.....no one, including Alba, matches Summer's beauty.

This is from imdb....not much :

Summer Glau
Birth name
Summer Lyn Glau
Height
5' 6½" (1.69 m)

Summer is a native of San Antonio, Texas. She's been a premier ballerina most of her life. Her debut was in various commercials and a guest appearance on the WB's "Angel" (1999). She has gone on to star on the TV series "Firefly" (2002) and is now in the movie Serenity (2005).

Trivia
The cast of Serenity (2005) made a running gag of shouting her name if they forgot their lines during a scene. The joke originated when she blew a line at the end of a particularly long and difficult scene on the TV series "Firefly" (2002).

Played similar "crazy" characters on both the television series "Firefly" (2002/I) (and its movie Serenity (2005)) and "The 4400" (2004

Are you discussing Race or Ethnicity? Not the same thing. Race is genetic; ethnicity is more....culture and heritage based.

I think there are 8 racial categories for HUD's purposes, and it is possible to be in more than one. Such as a caucasian-native american. Or a African American-Asian (Tiger Woods?).

Along with the racial category you also have an ethnic component. According to HUD there are only 2 ethnicities: Hispanic and non hispanic. You can be of any race and be hispanic or of any race and be non-hispanic. If you have trouble wrapping your noggin around that, remember that a vast number of the hispanics from Mexico are of 100% Native American descent.

It's fun sitting so close to government programs.

Summer's mom can be seen in this photo:
http://summer-glau.net/gallery/displayimage.php?album=164&pos=20

She brought her father and grandfather to the Houston Serenity screening and I would describe them as average-looking middle-aged/elderly white men.

Glau is a Germanic name, I think. There are large populations of people of German descent in central Texas, and San Antonio (where Summer is from) has a very large population of Mexicans (either recently from Mexico or from when San Antonio belonged to Mexico) or Spanish if you go waaay back.

At the previously mentioned Houston Serenity screening, in the autograph line Summer saw two women that looked alike, and asked them if they were sisters. They replied yes, and Summer said that she and her two sisters all look alike. Therefore, Summer may not particularly look like her parents, but she looks like her sisters. :) The Glau children are probably just American mutts with an interesting mix of DNA.

I can safely say that I asked Summer about her views on the ethnic dispute and she smiled a secretive smile and said she enjoyed that people don't know and can't tell so we don't comment on it either way at her official website. And I have also met one of the other Glau girls and Summer's mom too. They are all gorgeous and gracious and that's more than enough information for me.

Amyel , I vote for your answer as best yet !

You're correct , ' Glau ' is a name of Germanic origin . The Germans have contributed the most people to the population of the USA , followed closely by the Irish , but the mix is changing rapidly with time and significantly-uncontrolled immigration .

As for her ' muttness ' , Summer is definitely my kind of mutt !

Ethnicity-wise , I vote for creating a new category , which would be called , " So Very Pretty " !

I'm sure you didn't mean anything negative when using the phrase American mutts to descibe the Glaus....but seriously, if Summer Glau is a mutt, then I'm Julius Caesar!

And besides...a mutt??? Isn't everybody in America basically a mix of parents whose parents were from different countries? Mutt is quite an unflattering term...I would prefer to classify Summer as uniquely breathtakingly gorgeous...or is that not politically correct these days?!

Well, I certainly didn't use mutt in a derogatory way, especially since I called myself one! I don't look like her at all (besides the same hair/eye color) but I'm not a mangy dog either. There's nothing wrong with the word mutt...you've really never heard people jokingly call themselves or others American mutts? sheesh

Plenty of Americans are a mix of a few things, but if you can count every great or great-great grandparent being from a different country or ethnicity, that's still a bit unusual. I have no idea if Summer is like that or not, but she certainly could be.

And I wasn't meant to be derogatory about actual mutts, either. Mix breed dogs are actually a lot more genetically stronger than purebreeds. Just in case any canines were offended by post.

I don't know if it is necessarily correct or not but http://www.summer-glau.net/bio.php speaks of her heritage. It says "Summer Lyn Glau was born on July 24, 1981, in San Antonio Texas. Even though she grew up close to the Mexican border, she’s not of Latin origins. Her ancestors were German, Irish and Scottish." I don't know where they got this from so I'm not going to say it's absolutely correct, but it seems very possible.

Hi,
Yeah ive been looking around too, to see what her nationality might be. I know she claims Scotish,German and Irish. I can see the asian in her features as well. I truly believe their is Asian of some sort hispanic no. Im guessing something on the lines of Laoas, Vietnamese. Pretty much rulled out filipino. Not sure about Japanese. Notice she says nothing about her parents. I suspect the asian is from one of the grandparents.
Some people are ashamed to admit asian orgin even in this day and age. Beautiful Girl who will make it big.

Another thing I myself am a mixture of Irish, scotish, filipino,Basque and am also familiar of what a mixture of nationalities can look like.
Also Most Asians carry their parents last names to middle name when they marry. Unlike Americans can chose what we want.My wife(filipino)carried her moms last name as her middle and her fathers last name until we married then she kept her fathers as her middle name. Lyn could be something carried over Glau she says means glow in German. Sound like Nau which would be Laoas or thai. I have no doubt their is asian but what exactly?
Again I had a sister who used to claim Caucasian to her friends way back in High School.(mountain area)Red hair, Fair skin, brown eyes only her slanted eyes and flat nose gave her away.My old mans mother was a red headed irish, scotish woman. He look like a pure Filipino.Like his father.People always though she was baby sitting. You never can tell.
Summer Lyn Glau has unique beauty!

What do you mean, EVEN IF? Start making sense, woman!
Her ears are giggling because no one can see their true form and they enjoy being hidden in plain sight - the contagious giggling is obviously what makes Summer smile so much (Admittedly, she does screw up her lines from time to time because it can be irritating at times - "SUMMEEEEER!" - which of course makes the ears giggle even more).
Besides, they can rest and stretch their tips when she's wearing her hair open.

No offense taken, although my family prefers the term "Heinz 57". Hybrid vigor, what a wonderful thing!

On the ethnicity Vs. race thing, here's a wonderful example: The definition of "Hispanic", in California at least, is limited to "Those whose ancestry originates in a former Spanish new-world colony, and whose ancestry includes both European Spanish and some form of Native American."

So. I'm half-Spanish, but I'm not hispanic, since European Spaniards aren't hispanic under the law. My wife has both Choctaw and Chickasaw in her family tree, but no Spanish, so she's not hispanic either.

That means that, legally, our daughter, born in California (a former Spanish colony) is hispanic, even though neither of her ancestors are.

I know you're convinced she's Asian, SonnyMariano, but she's not. Sorry. She doesn't have some secret Asian/Pacific Islander ancestor that she's ashamed of. A lot of Europeans have small lidded eyes that look very similar to the Asian eyelid. Most of my family has eyes like Summer's. We're a mix of European areas. It's just how it works sometimes.

I'm not ashamed either. Even though I don't share their bloodline, I'm very proud of my Japanese family members. We're a big world and a big family. Who cares what we look like.

We can't judge peoples' ancestry on looks because many have similar characteristics.

Summer was cast because she has that blended look (and a great actress). In the future it will be even more difficult to determine ancestry.

ANOTHERSKY

While the definitive jury (Summer Glau herself) is out (and seems indefinately out, being as she likes to keep some secrets, like the rest of us)
I could see the 'same physical-feature' arguments going either way.

It is true that the small/pouty lips, cheekbones, eye shape/angle, forehead, small frame, body shape etc. could be applied to either, as has already been contended.

Another perspective:
As a very mixed Caucasian mutt, my friend shares many of these similar features(either Irish or SE Asian depending on who you ask) She is asked on a frequent basis if she's part asian, especially due to her small frame. Until people see her green eyes--then they get uncertain. So really, it's all in what you assume about the person.

Regardless, as some astute poster already mentioned, the actress has the right "look" Joss wanted in his post Earth-That-Was universe, whether her genes originate from Europe, Asia, or a mix of both.

It is a very interesting question, and I hope queries in this vein will continue to be good-spirited.

My food is problematic.

Going for a ride.

TRAVELER

A friend of mine married an Irishman with very dark hair. She called him Black Irish. Why do people think the Spanish all have black hair?

But we are all mutts. The human race has imigrated back and forth on this planet for thousands of years.

One tribe pushes another who pushes the next in line.

The owner of my company is from Puerto Rico and has the last name of Ramirez. If you met him on the street you would think he was Scandinavian. He even speaks with a perfect midwestern accent.

When people ask me what my ancestry is, I tell them Nebraskian. That is about as close as I can get.
