Please stop by the following sites, check out the various Pro-Firefly threads and support, and say "Hi".

Farscape: www.scifi.com/farscape

GR's Andromeda: www.slipstreambbs.com

As a gesture of support, Fans from both camps will come out and try to help give Firefly a ratings boost for this Friday's episode: "Out of Gas", before the "Nielsen Sweeps" commence next week.

"Out of Gas" has been getting excellent reviews for a change, and FOX is pushing it heavily as well. This episode has been compared with "Pulp Fiction" in the way that it uses flashbacks and flash-forwards.

Hopefully, this will create some positive press for Firefly to build on next week. I can't speak for the Andromedans, but the Scapers could use a return favor for their own season premiere come January 10th. Thanks!

---------------------
Additionally we've seen what FOX did to Dark Angel without warning, and we hope to avoid another murder of one of our own. I have heard that Dark Angel had a 3 year minimum storyline plotted, but was not allowed to finish. Both Dark Angel and Firefly should of had a right to live. FOX's handling has caused needless infighting amongst the science fiction community. And after two years of support from devoted Dark Angel fans, FOX has, at the very LEAST, a moral obligation to release the Dark Angel DVD's inside the United States as quickly as possible.

Most definately. I'm a big time Scaper. I was there in the beginning (I actually got quoted on farscape.wdsection.com) and I'll be there in January.

Because I have such a problem with naysayers, I'll start it off. Unless those Farscape and Andromeda watchers are part of that nifty Nielsen family, the ratings will not change. I'll watch Farscape when it starts back up, but without the little black box (or whatever they use to track) no one ever knows what I (or the population of the United States minus 1000) watch.

You're right. But please pass the word if you get an opportunity. You might be able to indirectly affect someone downstream. Thanks!

I agree with the statement that without the Nielson equipment it won't affect the ratings and therefore won't be significant there(unless we get lucky and somehow happen to hit upon a few Nielson families in this word of mouth campaign). However, these days, major companies tend to have people patroling the web.. mostly to protect their copyrights, but also to interpret fanbases. I think Fox seeing that two major pre-existing fanbases, some of which may have not previously seen Firefly, are getting behind it now, could take that as a very positive scene if it gets back to them from the people handling web stuff.

Regarding the neilsens ...

Neilsen ratings are used to set ad rates. It's pretty much the only constant feedback networks get about who's watching their shows. I won't say it's the best, because it really isn't, but since everybody who watches TV doesn't actaully tell the networks what they're watching, it's the best they can do at the moment.

If you're not a neilsen family you can still have your voice heard. Letters to the network do count. Letters to the advertisers do count. The belief that the neilsens rule all is not quite the truth.

I'm not speaking specifically about Firefly here, but about any show you enjoy. Say your favorite show just aired a really great episode, write a letter to the network, tell them how much you enjoy the show, and thank them for airing it. Include your demographic information. And while you're watching that show, and you notice an advertisement for a product you use, write the people who make that product, tell them you like the product, and hey, you just saw an ad for it on your favorite show. The advertisers, more than anybody, appreciate that feedback. Your voice is as a consumer. The advertisers pay the networks for ad time and you the viewer are the consumer. The advertisers want to know that their money is being well spent. The neilsen ratings tell them who's watching, but you can do the same thing as an individual by letting them know that you're there.

Sitting back as a fan and letting the neilsen ratings determine everything is a mistake. Be proactive about the shows you like. Don't wait until they're in danger before dropping the Nets a line.

That's just my 2ยข from the trenches.

edited because good grammer is, uh, good.

There is a big Firefly fan base over at the slipstream BBS. I just hope FOX doesn't screw up and around with the show.
