I need to which planet was the first to secede from the Alliance . I do not remember seeing it any where but have read several articles about the Independent movement but nothing about who was first and then what planets followed.

SISTER

Hmmm; the way I understand it the planets didn't secede from the Alliance - they just refused to join and took up arms when the Alliance decided to "force" them; but that's just me and I am probably wrong!
Good question, though! Hope someone with more info answers you.

Above is correct. You may be confused by Joss mentioning that his model for the verse was the aftermath of the American Civil War, based upon a book he read. However, the verse is more akin to England, France, and Poland seceding from the Union of German slave nations - they never seceded, Germany just forced themselves upon the others. The alliance just forced themselves upon all worlds.

Uhm, I always thought there were more like nations refusing to join the rule of one organisation. There used to be many independent planets, and the Alliance "united" them, which didn't sit too well with some of the outer planets, so the Alliance FORCED unification on them. I don't think your post-WW2 example applies at all. And I'm not saying that because I'm German.
Actually, I'm thinking it's more likely inspired by lil' Bush's "If you're not with us, you're against us."-attitude, and the intermingling of government and corporations. <- not supposed to spark a political discussion; just my opinion.

Ummmm. The Axis Powers (instead of Alliance) of Germany, Italy, Japan joined together as unified soveriegnties, and decided to force their rule upon the rest of the world. They offered each target a surrender, like the Alliance - and then conquered them when surrender was not forthcoming. The Alliance is the same thing on a solar system scale.
The Axis powers were defeated. The independents (Allied) prevailed. The Alliance was not defeated by the independents.

I am also German. My Great Grandparents fled under Kaiser Wilhelm.
