So i went to the comic shop a few towns away last saturday for the release of DND 4E because our town doesnt have a comic or hobby shop. While i was there i found that most of the people were huge firefly fans and either played the firefly role play game or read the comic which i wasnt even aware exsisted. sadly i had no money on me so i didnt get to buy the first few issues. so i was wondering if any of you read the comics and what you think of them. are they half as awesome as the show and should i go back and buy them?

Yes.

Serenity: Better Days Wonderful. Beautiful. Sexy. Funny. Like a Firefly/Serenity episode. We had a real good argument
going on another thread about what this meant and what that meant and who did what etc. Just like Firefly.

Serenity: Those Left Behind takes place after that and before the movie.

Yes.

I think Serenity: Better Days would make a geat straight to DVD movie.

I would recommend these for any Browncoat, but be warned, the last series really changed the way I view Mal and the crew. Mal is not portrayed in a very heroic light. And, Zoë’s back-story after the war is as scary as hell. I guess that's the price you pay for seeing into other's fantasies.

And I've yet to read a current fanfic that has captured these new additions and nuances to the canon timeline. Things are definitely not as they seem. Except for stillflying, because you guys rock.

Actually, I ordered mine online.

There are 2 sets of three issues. Timeline wise, "Those Left Behind" follows "Better Days". A 3rd set is due out end of the yearish called "A Shepherds Tale".

I would start with “Better Days” as it follows the end of the series.

Hope this helps

See this is the part "We had a real good argument
going on another thread."

I tell ya Joss will prove I'm right someday! Or maybe not!

Yeah, leave it to Whedon to toss curve balls from a freaking comic book...I truly DO enjoy this series regardless of all the new unanswered questions, especially the last few lines at the end, between Mal and Inara, those lines really epitomize the show for me.

One can never have enough Firefly, so I recommend picking them up.

I'm not a fan of comic books, but I really enjoyed all of them so far. You can get them in two or three formats I believe - 3 part comic books (one series of which has three covers for each volume), a 1 volume softcover, and a 1 volume hardcover.

I dunno about Mal and Inara, I'm more intrigued by Simon...

Select to view spoiler:

IF he had used his cash to fulfil a fantasy and visit a Companion, which he obviously has some experience of, that would be a definite complication, for Inara and Kaylee's friendship, for Mal and Inara to overcome, for Kaylee and Simon's future relationship...it would also make sense of the increasing tension between Mal and Simon by the BDM, and contribute to Inara leaving the ship.

As for Zoe

Select to view spoiler:

finding out she didn't lay down arms as quickly as she might doesn't alter my view of her - she's always had that much harder edge. I think without the military discipline in her life and background, she would have been far more dangerous.

But Mal's reaction to it all? Perfectly in character, particularly if you accept the idea that

Select to view spoiler:

he may well have used the cash to pay off Sanda, literally ransomed Zoe's life.

As for Mal and Zoë... I hope that's what he did SpaceAnJL. Others see it differently.

But, on a deeper level, I think initially the motivation was more likely to spare a little doe eyed Companion's reputation, and then to create an opportunity for Zoë to take responsibility for her own actions and be redeemed, much like Zoe following Mal to Miranda.

And Simon... he's a doctor first and foremost, either way it beautifully sets up Mal' and Simon's antagonism in the beginning of the BDM. I think this maybe a chance to show Mal's jealousy, until he realizes she may need medical help and he may lose her and there's not a damn thing he can do about it. There is no heroic act to be done that requires a gun.

And Inara left because she was in love with the Captain, and that terrified her. The Captain may think otherwise, but that’s Joss's explanation.
Mal and Inara are a romantic tragedy. They're in love, there are obstacles, there is death.

i think the action is left a little open - Mal doing his unspoken leaping to conclusions, Inara not answering him directly. that's so them.
The reader is left to use their imaginations (exactly the BDH's) and we see into Mal's fantasies clearly - right there. Not during the 'share'.

one of the things i love about Better Days is that so much may turn on so little - great slight of hand. The emphasis shifts for me each time i read it.

as Anon would say 'just like Firefly':)

Exactly! Serenity: Better Days is re-readable just like Firefly is re-watchable.

EMBERS

they are wonderful, I love them ...
but you don't need to buy them as individual issues,
as you see above: both 'Those Left Behind' and 'Better Days' are out as single volume graphic novels now....

And a third set of comics will be coming out in December (the series starts then, I believe) which will be centered on Book's secrets.....

It is ALL good!

New Firefly fans should check this out: http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=15816
