Anyone who fought in the war cut their apples with a knife before eating.

Zoe explains the reason, due to the small charges that were planted in the apples during the war. Better to lose your hands than have your head blown off !

But Badger..... it was only after watching a few times that I noticed (sorry I can't remember the episode) that he also eats apples by slicing with a knife ........

Does anyone know anything about Badger's past?

Well given the way Badger treats Mal and the crew in Serenity I wouldn't be surprised if some of his past business ascociates have tried to bump him off a few times.
Really though this was before the whole 'grenades in the apples' bit would have been written and probably conceived of, I think it's more likely he eats it like that just to show that he's uncouth.

Joss mentions in the commentaries that Badger peels his apples w/ the peeler to demonstrate how much better he is than the ordinary person. Eating his apples by slicing them w/ a knife may just be his way of additionally separating himself from the plebians.

Did anyone notice that both in 'Serenity' and then in 'Shindig' Badger always at one point has a green apple. I wonder if the green apple symbolizes something about Badger.

Two possible theories for the green apple:

1) Green with envy, after all he's the sad little king of a sad little hill, a petty criminal with delusions of standing. Sure, he can afford fresh produce, and he can afford to not have to eat the peels but he surely doesn't have a buffet table to investigate all the time.

or

2) Crab apples are green, maybe Badger's just a cranky guy down deep inside.

Gorramit ... I can't remember the name of it! ... but remember that famous piece of artwork in the remake of 'The Thomas Crown Affair' ... the painting of a man with a bowler hat ... wasn't his face replaced by a green apple. That's how I recall, anyhow. Coincidence?

Ron Glass was on "All in the Family"? We used to watch that all the time, and I don't recall Ron being on the show. But imdb.com have this listing: "All in the Family" (1971) playing "Jack" in episode: "Everybody Tells the Truth" (episode # 3.21) 3 March 1973. This would indicate a single appearance, wherein (maybe?) he eats an apple? A bit too obscure a reference for me; how would one go about seeing that one particular episode from 31 years ago?

Badger's apple peeler is pretty unique too. I think it's the kind the Shaker's used to make. He klnda of makes a show of nonchalantly peeling the apple, definetly showing off.

I'm sure Mr. Sheppard was being silly when he made the reference to Ron's role in "All in the Family" but here's a full description of the episode. The apple does have a key role. TV Land shows AITF late at night so you might be able to catch this ep sometime.

All in the Family: Everybody Tells the Truth (1973)

The Bunkers and Stivics are out dining again, this time because the refrigerator is broken. Archie and Mike can't remain amicable for long, and before long, they're quibbling about the visit from the repairman and his helper (Ron Glass), who is black. Both the Arch-ster and the Meathead have vastly different versions of the visit, with the focus of each story centering on a knife. Archie insists the helper (in his version, a foolish minstrel not unlike the old vaudeville shows) threatened him with a knife, while Mike says there was no knife at all. Both men tell stories that has the other side being the moody villian. Turns out only Edith can tell the truth: There indeed was a knife ... a pocket knife used to cut an apple for a snack.

You know, now with the plot synopsis there (thanks!) I think I actually vaugely remember that episode.

From reruns of course, my memory isn't all that great from 1973 seeing as how I was, well, one.

But yeah it definately rings a bell, the whole back and forth story of "what really happened".

I have one. They aren't that unique. "The Pampered Chef" company sells them for like 20 bux or so. Apples not included. Cheap bastids.
