Can Mal Fly Serenity?

My memory is not as it should be ..... did Mal ever display any piloting skills? Or was Wash - the Man :)

There are a few instances of Mal being at the helm. Zoe asked him to take over in the pilot so Wash could tear all her clothes off, and he was ready to fly her at the end of the movie until River took over. I think it's likely that Mal learned the basics of flying but can't do some of the more complex/advanced/fancy moves that Wash can pull off. Like the difference between a normal, decent driver and a professional driver.

Ah, thanks. I did wonder if he was a trained pilot. He seems like a leader, and a commander and a soldier - not sure he's much of a trader, or a space pilot though!

He knows how to fly Serenity, but I think that Wash does it better. Plus having Wash made him available to go out on the mission instead of having to stay with the ship or not having a quick get away if necessary. At the end of the film he is going through the start up sequence before River takes over unexpectedly.

Probably similar to his shuttle piloting skills. He can do it, just doesn't do it enough to be fluid in the motions. Like riding a bike, you never forget, you just suck for a little bit.

Mal took back the controls from River at the end of the movie and made Serenity spin around in the sky. So yeah, Mal can fly.
