Star Trek not real??? Blasphemy! Who is spreading these lies?
Rallem - I like your reality. Can I join you there?

Do you have the DVD? The transfer is incredible!

Side note; it was directed by Lee H. Katzen, who also directed the pilot for Man From Atlantis

Yep, and I think Katzin snuck a nod to Le Mans in there: When the French scientist steps out in her new racing-striped uniform and asks her colleagues, "Do I look like a Grand Prix driver?"
Katzin also directed the pilot for Space: 1999, and those uniforms had racing stripes, too!

I rented it...still wowed by the 'get away from the crash' scene; the cuts between slo mo & real speed were way before their time.

OMG Cl, you REALLY know your flicks (I have that one on old-style videotape)!

Yeah, that one image of the Ferrari driver's arm flailing out and the helmet visor spinning off in slo-mo really stuck in my mind as a kid, but a lot of the people I showed the DVD to just didn't "get" the jump-cuts. They'd ask if something was wrong with the film.
They asked the same thing during Inara's spongebath scene in Serenity. (Tryin' to bring this back on-topic!)
I've heard it said that Katzin pioneered "Bullet Time" when the Wachowski's were just toddlers.

I'm thinking that Inara's bathing scene was distracting enough on it's own without the "jump-cuts". I wonder how many times they made Morena re-shoot the scene....

I just felt compelled to reply here;

Finally someone else said it...now don't get me wrong I loves me some Firefly and the BDM but...

I too found some minor, and major, discomforts with the BDM.

Killing Wash! Arrrgghhh! (I'll get to Book in a moment). What possessed JW to do it. In the commentary he glosses over it about character arc, but not like that, not so abruptly without doing what made me fall in love with FF to begin with - character development. I agree that were it developed over a season or two on the series and then proceed into the BDM. But here I say, that the arc of Wash & Zoe (I really loved their dynamic) from the HOG ep where we find out Zoe wants a baby. That story arc alone would have been golden, just pure golden!!! There's more I have to say about Wash but i don't want to write a book here.

Book.....what was up with that. His story, Inara, the above-mentioned Wash & Zoe (I would have loved to have seen how they got together) were among the most interesting of all the characters. I used to think that River's story was but as I watch FF over and over again, well you know. JW hardly touches upon Book's story and then kills him off without so much as a how-do-you-do. There was an article that I read on line, a movie review from 2005, that touched upon the kill-off of Book; to paraphrase the reviewer stated that his death, however disagreeable to the fans, moved the plot along and provided Mal with motivation and resolve to carry forth the mission. As Mal stated, to fight the good fight on his terms. But he could not understand why JW would kill off Wash except as pure shock value.

In fairness, Joss did state that he had never written a movie script before and that it was the hardest thing he'd ever done. But thing did feel somewhat off-balance and off-kilter. BTW I loved the intro of both Mr. Universe and The Operative (I see great things in his future with the crew and especially River) but not at the expense of my BDH. And that funeral at the end felt so tacked on. It didn't do our heroes any justice whatsoever. But I think Joss just forgot what made FF so great to experience - the characters and how they interacted with one another in each situation. Having said that, except for those few things I loved seeing our BDH back in action. I'm hoping against hope that we get to "complain" some more about the next movie in the not to distant future.

It's officially my favourite movie of all time. The only other movies I seen more times are Star Wars & Enter The Dragon, and that's just cause they've been around a lot longer.
How could you not be a fan of it?
OK, I know...Wash....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No, not just Wash OR Book (everybody always forgets about him) it's inconsistancies (sp?) with the characters, time line issues, focusing too much on new characters (Mr Universe and those twins, time that could have gone more towards Inara, Book, Wash). It just..... things felt off, unbalanced and wrong. Now don't get me wrong, it is a good movie and maybe one day I'll pop it into the tray, but as it stands it's not something I can watch over and over like some films. To me the movie is a shadow of the greatness that is Firefly. But that's my opinion and I wouldn't force it on anyone or argue with those that love it.
Now if this was done over time, spaced out over a year in small doses, like maybe a second season, but we never got that and Joss just fit too much into a two hour span. And the characters especially paid for it. JMHO.
I hear ya.. though I would worry if and entire audience starting singing the Firefly theme I would lose it and get all choked up.
