I was just introduced to Firefly last week. At 1st, I just "dvr'd" some episodes, but got out of order so I borrowed the DVDs. Being a Star Trek fan from way back, it has been hard for me to watch Sci-Fi shows on TV, not sure why..I guess I figured they could not measure-up. All I can say is, I am very sorry that I never watched Firefly before now. It grabbed me right away, as I zoomed thru the DVD series, and watched the movie this weekend. I am speechless, what a fantastic show! Planning to buy all the Blu-rays as they come out!

Sorry to be late....

Trying to get my Dad to watch it now, he is not a big Sci-Fi fan, but loves Westerns! This is the 1st web discussion/forum etc. that I have ever done. The show has inspired me!

There's a lot to discuss.
Like, did you think Serenity was a good follow-up to Firefly?

You're not late, merely "timeline challenged".
You started off recruiting new fans right away. I'd say you're ahead of the game.

It's really good to have you with us Late Bloomer. I too never got to watch an episode of Firefly while it ran live, and only picked it up one day while shopping at Borders and I saw they had the box set for dirt cheap and while I never heard anything about it it looked interesting enough to risk at that price. Was I excited at that find? I own Serenity but just bought the collectors edition Yesterday from Amazon.

Welcome aboard there LATERBLOOMER.
I really enjoy seeing post like yours. They get the FFF forums all excited again. Glad that you found the Joss verse and I’m also glad that you “GOT” the show. Some people see the show and think it’s good, but it’s not merely good, it’s fantastic. There’s plenty things going on around the forum so dig in. Hope you win your dad over and get him to watch it too. May make a si/fi fan outta him yet (lol)

Anyway, glad you made it to the forums, Z

Yes, I thought it was awesome! It tied things together really nicely! River was the only part of the "series" that I did not totally "get" until the movie tied her in. What a bada-- fighter. Now I see why Summer was cast in the Terminator TV series, which she also did a great job in...actually seemed like a similar character in some ways!! I Hope Terminator returns next season... Anyway...I have already tried to convince at least 2-3 people to watch Firefly. Gorram Good show!

I remember getting my brother to watch Firefly who wasn't a fan of science fiction at all and he thinks it is the best series ever just as I do. The only problem is I lent him my dvds of the show and movie a few months ago and still haven't gotten them back.

I really want to get my son involved, but he is only 9 years old. I am not sure how to get him past the more adult themes and scenes in Firefly. They are part of what I love about the show, it is so real and NOT Politically correct... Just a little to real for a young boy! Darn it...wonder if they have a censored version...

Along those lines...I loved how they introduced Kaylee in the flashback(s), I already had her pegged as so darn sweet and "shiny", and then to see that...shocked me but made her much more real! Wonder what happened to the original Mechanic dude!

I can't help you out there because I am not a parent and anything I would say would just be hollow words.

Hi there, Latebloomer

Welcome, Welcome! All are welcome.

Doesn't matter you came late to the dance, you came just the same - so take your shoes off and make yourself ta' home.

About getting your dad to watch. If he likes westerns, he'll love Firefly. I'm a western fan myself from way back and I fell in love with FF the moment I saw the promos back in 2002 (for the tv series). The horses running free and Serenity flying over them - great stuff. Just show your dad that and see what he says.

Anyway glad you're with us.

Shiny! Let's be bad guys!

I think it's really great that a Star Trek fan like yourself appreciates Firefly. I too am a huge Trek fan, even more so since I started watching the DVD's on a big screen TV. The truth about both shows is that although the epsiode plots are interesting, they're NOT the driving force of the shows....it's the characters, people you come to know and love, and their interaction with eachother which makes both shows special.

New fans who want to evangelize no longer have to worry about borrowers not returning their box sets...you can tell your friends that all the episodes are on hulu.com--all legal and free.

Yes! I agree it is the characters and the interaction between them that really make these shows great! I always loved the sarcastic interaction between Spock and Bones in Star Trek. In Firefly, I love the off-color humor that surprises you and makes the show more real...especially the more suttle things that not everyone will catch... like Jayne's "I'll be in my bunk" comments.

My son is nine also, I conjure it'll be sometime next year when I intro him to the show proper-like. Explainin' Inara's profession will likely be the biggest problem...big cootie factor with that one.

Yes, Inara's profession is my biggest worry. The kids already seem to hear an awful lot of adult themes at school, don't want my son adding to that by talking about Inara.
