Keep the Shiny side up

Guess it was the warm, moist Spring here in No. Va. but the fireflies are just out in hordes. We can go out in the evening and see dozens flying around in the little 'verse of our back yard, loking for love.

Miss the sight of them here in the West. So cool seeing them in the woods, feeling a little weirded out then realizing what they were (not hallucinations, those were the days) then just totally enjoying them.

Are we fireflies?

I miss fireflies! When I lived in Reston we used to see them every year. It is to hot here in hell....I mean lower Alabama.

Here in coastal NC we're seeing less fireflies. We've had a long stretch of dry, but the last few days have been thundery so I'm expecting to see a few more.

I remember when I was a kid seeing them meant that summer was in full swing.

Good Times!

Shiny! Let's be bad guys!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Plenty of them here in the Richmond area too. After seeing next to none last year, seeing all of them flying around again at night this year is really a treat.

not as many this year as in the past - but our part of Tennessee was in the 'exceptional drought' category for most of last year - we are seeing some of 'em though. I know when their butts flash they're looking for love - I wonder what they think about airplanes overhead?

They think someone's showing 'firefly porn'...a lot of 'em find it stimulating...

A couple of years ago , I saw an Aimee Mann concert outdoors , and one of the many very lovely things about the evening was the appearance of numerous Fireflies around the periphery of the amphitheatre...It was kind of profound , because an old song of hers references catching fireflies , and 'punching some pinholes , in the lid of a jar'...

Anyone remember a Fleetwood Mac tune called Fireflies ?

Ah, beautiful memories of my Allegheny childhood, and long twilight instead of the sun-falling-into-ocean quickie evenings here. Yes, we filled the jars, but we had to let the bugs out at bedtime.
Nothing like that here in the Coastal Desert of the left edge of the US.
We were reminded last year during the lights-out project that fireflies need some darkness to find each other for the performance of that which is necessary to the production of babies, so keep your outdoor lighting to a safe minimum and enjoy the little guys and gals while you have them.

STEAMER

They were putting on quite a light show last night - looked for all the world like a starry sky on the ground. In fact I was spotting a propane plant in a particularly foliated area and they were swarmin'! I even got to talking to them, wishing them luck in finding what they're looking for. Shoving into the customer track, at one point I was half tempted to tell the engineer to make an emergency stop and avoid hitting one that was flying in front of the train! Also apologised to them for the stinky diesel exhaust. Bleah. I'm pathetic, I know. Just glad I was the only one out there on the ground.

Awwwww, Steamer. Now you've got me started. Snif. I miss the little guys so much.
There's a scene in "Big Fish" with CG fireflies that are so realistic I want to reach out and grab one.
But gently...
