Well, i got to the 'response' page, typed in some words in the reply window, but when I hit Post My Response , it booted me back to the front page.

In one thread, there were about 5 replies already, and now there's just 2.

Over the years there's been a variety of reasons why these things happen here. A couple times, the site has been cracked, and others the MSSQL DB has freaked out (at least one time not repairable). Both have taken the site down and/or made it quite wonky.

When it comes to the comments not sticking around, that could be the whole cracker having fun thing. Or it could be that Haken has restored from a backup.

Now, from what Haken has said in the past, these backups are not made regularly. So, he restores from the backup and then he manually resurrects what he can from the (possibly) corrupted DB.

All of this is a bloody pain and quite time consuming. That's the reason why backups are (usually) automated and put in cron (typically) nightly in rotation (only keeping previous backups for an amount of time). That way if things are lost, only a very short period of time goes away. But, because previous backups are also kept, if the problem isn't spotted straight away, one can go back as far as necessary to get a good backup.
