One of conventions I like about story telling is leaving the enemy, the evil thing, a mystery. It allows me to fill in blanks with twisted bits of my own overactive imagination. The Reavers intrigue me because of thier implied ultra-violence. I like ultra violence.... from an entertainment standpoint not in reality of course.

I see the Reavers as the "Indians" in this cowboy adventure. Though I hesitate to use that analogy since in reality the native americans were much more misunderstood and misrepresented than the actual savages they have been portrayed in the past.

I am hoping we will get to see them. If the happenings in Bushwhacked are any inddication they should be a....colorful bunch. I was thinkin if this guy who was "turned" almost vampire-ish-ly into one of these Reavers and he mutilated himself, stuck stuff in his face, what he did should be half-assed compared to what an actual Reaver would do.

So I drew this little sketch of just a Rever-face:

Its not as gorey as I could have made it, but you might not want to check it out if you just ate, or are faint of heart.

Nevermind...looks like it just shows the pic anyways...sorry If I grossed anyone out.

I was thinking though severly wounded, the exposed tissue would be somewhat healed over and they would have older scars from previous ritualistic injuries. Maybe self mutilation would be a way of determining social status/ranking in thier society? I think it would most likely be done with peices of equipment that they scavenge and other things that are readily availible similar to the Bushwhaked fellow. There is a lot to conjecture which I think adds to the show. I do think we will learn much more as the series progresses. they can only run from faceless spaceships for so long before it becomes redundant.

So what do you guys think the Reavers will be like when they make thier big on-screen debute?

Nice sketch!

I've had 2 different ideas on how the Reavers would look like.

1. 'Cause their ship kinda reminded me of the sand people in Star Wars I've kinda envisioned them to look somewhat like that.

2. They can't look too alien-like 'cause Joss Whedon says there won't be any aliens just scary humans in latex. I'm guessing Joss will be going with the puffy no-eyebrow hair look. Rotting, daggerish teeth. Chest-long tangled hair. And demonish eyes.

Sure wished I could draw. My description doesn't do the justice.

Cheers!

That picture is going to give me nightmares for sure!

I myself imagined Reavers to look like the bad guys in Blade 2 - with the big split jaw.

Since Reavers mutilate/torture thier victims, I'm going to hazzard a guess that they might also wear "trophy reminders" of a particularly memorable kill. Ears, fingers, ect. Although, considering this is T.V. and must therefore be somewhat edited - this will probably not be the case. But - they seemed like individuals that might.

I think that pic is damn near right on the money. Very well done. Actually, I think it's likely that they might sharpen their teeth to points, so that they can literally rip people to shreads just by biting into them.

If Reevers really look like that, I'm glad we haven't seen them yet.

I didn`t see bushwacked, so I don`t know what the guy looked like, but they can`t be all that crazy, they can still fly a spaceship, which can`t be a simple task. Plus, there still human. In the script for "Serenity" when the reavers were coming, jayne was scared off his rocker and loading huge cartridges into a huge gun. I would think they would be just as easy to kill as any other human, I don`t see why they are so feared.

Actually humans can be quite difficult to kill. Especially if they are crazy or hopped up on drugs.

The picture reminded me of some of the Tortured Souls line from Mcfarlane Toys, as designed by Clive Barker. Neat.

I don't know about that. Have you been watching John Doe? I was shocked at the graphic scenes in one of the eps--people that had been literally sliced in half widthwise, and they weren't subtle about showing it. Had to warn my friend NOT to watch her tape if her daughter was nearby.

Not that I approve of this--it rather ruined the episode for me. Implied violence and grossness is both safer for viewers and a classier way to portray it.

I apologise again for grossin people out. I did mean for it just to be a link to the pic. ...whoops,I mean..

I did draw him with file-sharpened teeth first, but erased and redid em normal-ish cause it just looked more disturbing to me.

Wayne D Barlowe is the artist who did the....what were thay called in Blade 2....hmmmm....oh yeah "ReaPers". He is very fond of the split face motife and does it often in his creature designs. I also like the Clive Barker toys and dont deny being influenced by either of these sources.

That quote by Mr. Joss about making people scarrier than latex inrigues me. But that said, unless they shoved sharp metal in the actors face in Bushwhacked there was probably some form of prostheic make-up. Then again, method acting...you never know, might have just been way into the role. Thats just spliting heirs, I transalated that quote as being : "I aint gonna make no ruttin' blue aliens with ridges on thier noses, gorammit!!!"

I am also pondering that whole..."sew our skin into thier clothes" line. I may just have to draw a full-on reaver dressed in the hieght of reaver fashion. I think each one would have a distictive look, some would have long ratted hair, some will have scalps with too much scar tissue to grow hair. And there is also the effects of long exposure to radiation to take into consideration.

It wil be interesting to see how far the show will go in making em gorey. Although gorey doesnt equal scarry, it can enhance it quite nicely.

There is also the chance...although heavily contradicted in the state of the Bushwhaked person and Mal's mysterious experience with the beasties.....that the Reavers are not as evil as the rest of the settled planets believe them to be. Admittidly it would be a stretch from what we have seen so far. But maybe it was just that crazy hoo-haa that they found on the ship that skinned them people. Maybe the fear of Reavers is a fabrication derived from thier isolation from civilization. Maybe when they pull our heros in with the grappler-arm and open the airlock we will only to see a bunch of nice chaps wondering if Serenity gets FOX on the TV so they can watch people get sliced in half on "John Doe"....then again, thats not very likely. But hey, thats why I keep watching to find out.

I wasn't grossed out by your sketch, TheSkinwalkeR, though it is nicely chilling. And you gave sufficient warning in the thread title for the squeamish to avoid. I'm just not happy with the level of grossness that John Doe was willing to display.

That said--I adore Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials! I shall have to dig out my old copy.

Yeah, thats the same book I got!

I got it yeeeeaaars ago from the sci-fi bookclub. I remember there being at least a couple split-faced beasties in the sketch section towards the back. I too should pull mine from my library and mull over for olde-tymes sake. I was first exposed to him in an article in Omni where he gave instructions on hw to make aliens...quite fun. I was thinking about picking up his Inferno series too. But us artists is poor and sometimes we must settle for the occasionl look-see in a bookstore or web-gallery. I may have to take a trip to the Morpheus gallery and see the modern surrealists work in person.

Your point is well taken. Violence is only effective when apropriate. If it is gratuitous and pointless it usually has the opposite of the desired effect.

Ahhh...I go always do with a littl grossing out. I think you've interpreted an element of the show very well far more so than they probably afford with their sky high budget already. Good job.

I did not say that humans are easy to kill, but a reaver shouldn`t require an elephant gun. If your hip is gone you cant very well kill people. A person might seem hard to kill, but I hunt moose, a human is a puss compared to that. I wouldn`t be any more afraid of a reaver than a normal human, though I would shoot my self before being captured!

I think that's a great sketch. I wish I could draw like that, or at all. I'm guessing that the Reaver's are going to look all pale and almost corpselike. I'm thinking something similar to the Master in Buffy season 1. But with definetely the open face like you've got, that's a big creep factor right there. One question though: in the ep where the guy tried to turn himself into a Reaver, didn't he cut his tongue in two or something? I might be wrong. Wouldn't that make talking almost inpossible for Reaver's, unless they've got their own gutteral form of language or use some kind of sign language. I'm not expecting them to have these philosphical conversations with each other, but they have to communicate some way.

I have kinda found it interesting doing these sketches. (I'll post another one when I can find some time to finish it up a bit) What I find myself thinking about is how to drastically mutilate ones self:
A)without killing myself

B)without limiting movement or senses so I can attack people savagely and be aware of where my victims are fleeing.

C) with causing continuous pain, yknow for inspiration and what not.

D) Having it mean or convey something

This face I made, I wanted to make his mouth seem bigger to make him look hungry for settler vittles. so I thought to stretch his lips out and suspend them with bolts, giving him a wide maw even when his mouth was closed. Also notice how he stapled one eye shut, but thought to slit the bottom of the lid open so he could still see.

I think the Bushwhacker didnt know how to Reaver himself up proper and thats why he cut his tongue.
