Proud dad boast coming up.

My son was in our school orienteering team which won the national championship on the weekend. He was 5th in his individual race and 4th in his relay. However, because we won two relays and had 11 podium finishes, we were the National Champions by a considerable margin.

ff jr (the first browncoat I ever recruited BTW) was one of 17 runners who scored points for the school, out of 31 in the team. And three of those contributed fewer points. And it's his third sport. He done good.

(As assistant team manager, I take some of the glory... )

Congratulations! I confess I have no idea what a "school orienteering team" is or does, but I've no doubt you've got reason to be proud.

Can he kill people with his mind? Just curious...

It was like that when we got here!

Congratulations on your achievements!

Relays, PRs, and times... sounds like Track and Field

Share some of the distances and times with us and which meet? what are the school divisions?

YELLOWJACKET

Orienteering, unless they've changed the definition, is an overland task of locating points on a map by compass bearings. It is often done in competition against other teams to see who can plot a proper course, point to point along charted locations.

Congrats to your team.

If by track, you mean forest track, and if by field, you mean pasture, you're not wrong.

YellowJacket has it right except that no-one bothers with compass bearings as they take too long; you line up landmarks and away you go. You might use a compass two or three times a race to check north in forestted areas.

Ff jr was Under 14 so he ran 3.25km with a 110m vertical differential between the highest and lowest points; obviously it involved more climbing and descending than that - it was STEEP gullied terrain. It took him 32 mins; best time was 26, worst was 80.

ff jr's times:
total time = 32.41
time behind first = 6.01
individual legs
time place
1.40 (5)
1.51 (5)
2.00 (5) - dropped 45 secs, rated as a mistake
3.46 (5)
0.47 (5)
1.09 (1) - Yay, won this leg
1.32 (2)
1.56 (5)
3.05 (5)
1.11 (5)
1.23 (3)
4.55 (5)
4.44 (6) - worst leg, dropped a full minute here
1.38 (4)
1.04 (3)

The Under 16s took about 45-90 mins to run 4.8km and the open grade took 50-110 mins to run 6.3km (230m vertical!) Girls' distances were about 3km, 3.9km, 5km respectively and times about the same, though the worst runner, hopelessly lost, took 123mins!

Maybe 5-10% didn't go to the right control and were disqualified. In fact, one of our team DQed in his individual race and his teammate DQed in the relay, so, in a sense, he went the whole way for nada. He was happy though, as his actual times were quite quick - he'd've been second in his individual race.

Thanks for the info. The only sport that would come close would be our Cross Country, although your terrain sounds more wooded and your verticals are steep!

I would love to see such an event, how exciting for you to share with your son.
Congratulations again.

Congratulations on the orienteering award. When I was in high school I too belonged to the orienteering club, but there weren't any competitions with other schools then. I later on joined the u.s. army infantry and the orienteering from high school helped me earn my expert infantry badge. Orienteering is basically land navigation where contestants have to find places and things using only a compass and directions.

I'm sure you're very proud, and you should be! That was a lot of work for both of you.
