I was watching Angel tonight b/c I didn't know what else to do and at one part the green horned guy says something like '[I have a few clients that are getting buffed up for shooting]' "Young Guns 3". To me it sounded like a reference to an upcoming western, like Serenity. Maybe I was just playing the Young Guns 2 soundtrack and thinking about song themes I would like to hear in Firefly, but it seems like a vague reference to me. What do you all think?

I don't know; that seems like a bit of a stretch. Then again, I know we loyal Browncoats see Firefly references everywhere...

Oh, and the green horned guy's name is Lorne

Technically it's Krev'lornswath of the Deathwalk Clan. The "Lorne" thing is a pun.

He's green.

"Okay, now I feel old." --Angel, upon being the only one to get it.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Angel scripts seem to use a lot of the same phrases as Firefly. I just finished watching season 4 & I heard Loren say "Not so much" and one or two other cast members use the word "Shiny".

"May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one."

Frankly, I don't think the Young Guns 3 reference was an intentional reference to Firefly, but if it made you think of it, hey, that's shiny.

On the other hand, I think Lorne's "It's Grapes of Wrath in outer space. Uh-huh. Oh, it's got heart. Yes, it's got laser battles. It's got a timely message of interstellar poverty." from the Ben Edlund scripted "Life of the Party" is meant to be a vague reference.

As for the writing styles being similar, that's not really much of a surprise, since the shows share a lot of writers. I suspect we're all hyper-sensitive to certain words and phrases (like shiny), but I don't know that I would automatically assume they're Firefly references.

Did anyone here read the comic book Joss did a while back, "Fray"?

Excellent comic, a sort of hundreds of years later sequel to Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

They use pretty much the exact same phrases (in English) as Firefly (I think it's because the book was finished after Firefly's demise).

I highly recommend it to Whedonners.

"Not so much" is an expression I've heard my whole life. It makes me think of Jews from New York City - my grandmother being an example. She used to say "Not so much" all the time.

If you ever watched, "Mad About You", Paul Rieser is a big 'nsm-er'.

How is Lorne a pun? Isn't a pun a play on words? Considering that it is part of his name, it seems more like a nickname.

Lorne is green. Lorne Greene played Ben Cartwright on Bonanza and Admiral Adama on BattleStar Gallactica.

I understand that, and remember the episode where they discuss it (Angel says he feels old ha ha). So yes, it is a pun, but it is also a nickname, considering that it's still part of his longer name.

So we're both right.
