recently i joined the uk browncoat site while the fireflyfans site was down, and after the great reception i received here i was expecting a similar minded bunch of nice shiny people to interact with ,but what i got instead was small minded bullying and general closed mindedness after my first post i was reminded that the site was not a chat room and that my spelling was not up to scratch with no posetive response to the actual content of the post.i also know that i am not the only person this has happened to. It is a bad reflection on the people of the uk who call themselves browncoats .so i d like to pesonally thank all the people on this site for being civil and helpfull.I will also say that americans must generally get a better quality of scifi fan than we do in britain .or maybe im just lucky i found this site .all the best miike

One thing I do find prevalent in the online community is Elitism. It rears it's ugly head in MMORPGs, in Chat rooms, on forums and all over the net. Sometimes, it's merited, usually it's not. It sounds to me like that's what you met with there.

Newcomers to a community often encounter that - anyone who wasn't "there from the beginning" is a "noob" and get treated with patronizing contempt. I experienced in my brief stint in the SCA ("How long have YOU been doing this? Oh.. wow, well, I'VE been in in since I was BORN, my PARENTS were in it..." How does that make these people special or somehow better than myself, who only just discovered the SCA?).

I've even been guilty of it myself - I'm an elitist roleplayer, and I know it. As a result of knowing I have certain tendencies, I make DAMN SURE I NEVER treat people that way. I may not think they're good enough to be in "MY game" or I may think they're abusing the universe by straying so unbelieveably far from the canon - but I'm not going to say that to them. If they're having fun, I leave them alone! I can talk to them like a fellow fan, and appreciate the medium, without letting them know they don't meet my own elitist requirements for skills or abilities or talents or whatever it is, but I'm still going to show them respect and kindness. I just might not choose to play with them! lol

Anyway, I guess my point is that is SO sucks that you met with this, and it sucks that it's out there, and I know for a fact that just because you might feel a certain way, you don't have treat people badly as a result. I may not like a persons rp style or whatever, but that doesn't make them less of a cool person. It sucks people can't take a step back, check themselves, and realize that just because someone is new or less than perfect, doesn't mean they might not be someone they'rell be really glad to know.

And, 'nuff from me lol.

oh yes, ha ha! it always makes me giggle now.
I went through a brief defensive stage on various sites of like explaining to folks, 'hey - been on the internet for 15 years now, uh, lurked on your site for 5 of em - don't call me noob' etc, then i thought y'know - colour me young!:) it's virtual botox!:) i think i even play up to it sometimes, but i try not to.

This site is pretty well known for checking itself now and again - because obviously, overtime you can't NOT develop tight groupings of the like minded. But i don't love FFFN for nothing - and one reason is the ability it has en masse to shake itself and go, ok, let's be a little more encouraging. (give it up for FFFN one time!)

and hey, on the new dollhouse site i'm listed as a noob doll!!!:) Where i'm from that's just plain flattering.

ah, well role playing is a tricky one - i just lurk and read because i think, unless you are introduced properly and can keep pace and HAVE been watching awhile before joining then you'll just frakk up even though your intentions are cool. I expect those groups to be a bit wary and over clique-y, s'ok. You just have to get lucky and find your niche. (but, y'know not the, er, beyond and good and evil guy.)

Well , it's a pleasure Flyin' with you , Mike...

It's an honor to have Folk on this boat such as we have right here in this thread...

A lot of Folk hereabouts inspire me , and that includes all present company...

On occasion I wander into RWED , and dare to take a look-see...

When some of those dumbass hogs attack ,
I've been known to start to like smackin' 'em...

If I don't actually kill them...

Politely .

With my brain .

Well , if certain UK Browncoats seem less civilized , you've still always got a home here...

Yup...Miss Kaylee (well , Jewel Staite , actually) said so...

I remember an interview on the Sci-Fi network site , where she said that sofa across from Simon's medlab had been
pissed-up by the feral cats at the studio , and it REALLY reeked...

Ron Glass said likewise , and the Serenity ship set was 'dirty'...He was probably being polite , and understating the problem to a large degree...

I guess it is. I just kind of feel that personally, "private messages" sent are just that - share them with friends if you feel annoyed about one, but not to be reposted in full, in public.

Still, it's gone now so there's no need to debate! :)

TRAVELER

Hello Miike:

I have been to other websites and each has its own character. The United Kingdom does not hold a monopoly for bad fansites. I joined one here in the United States that was for Invader Zim and was shocked at the language and behavior of the members. If they were to speak and behave as they were doing on that site anywhere else they would be considered trolls.

I have never returned. I kicked the dust from their site off my feet on went on. They had created a site that suited their needs. I am thankful I do not require those needs.

I have come across people in my life who feel a need to be elite or special. It is fine as long as they don't abuse others. When they do abuse others then they should be left to wallow in their own filth. They are the ones that lose. They deprive themselves of discovering different tastes and cultures.

I guess we are lucky the people who created this site are of more open minds and that we found them.

Thanks Haken and thanks Miike for reminding me what FireflyFans has meant to me.

*hugs Traveler* Exactly. This is the reason that FFF.net is still my home. I've been all around the 'Verse and oddly ( because I never expected Browncoats to be irksome ) there are places that are not as welcoming and open minded as here.

I perused the UK browncoat site a while ago. After about five minutes I'd had enough. Too many childish responses. Too much elitism.
It was better than the IMDB forums but thats not saying much.

There are many reasons that I read/post on this forum but relating to this particular topic they are:

All the worthwhile UK Browncoats are here (Go UK!!).
The good company from all countries.
The politeness (except in RWED but even angels fear to tread there).
The intelligent posts.
The silly posts (but not stupid or inane or childish).
The funny posts.

And do you know what the main thing is here that seperates this place from every other forum I've ever visited on any subject?

The Mods.
Or rather the lack of them.
You don't see countless posts with 'Deleted by moderator' or 'Edited by moderator'.
You don't see folks being banned or warned all the time.
It's just so darn nice.

In short: Decent folk reside here - and may it never change.

As a proud UK Browncoat I would reply to the above with:

1) Never thought you were blaming the fans in general, just that site and some that reside there.
2) You mean there are people outside the UK. REAL people!!
3) No insult taken, free speech is allowed here.
4) Nothing wrong with naughty. Just look at some of Chrisisall's threads where he deliberately sets out to wind up folks (in the best possible way of course).

And your sig is ringing a bell. Is it from Watchmen? Been a while (many years) since I read it.

It's not elitism, it's friendship. Pretty much everybody on that board does or has at some time, hung out together in real life. And I'm not just talking conventions, either, I'm talking at each others' houses, birthday parties, weddings.

Most of us have been there since the board began, so it might be hard for newbies to join conversations because oftentimes we manage to have those conversations without actually posting half of what we're thinking - everybody else just knows what we're talking about. We can't help that. It doesn't mean we think we're better than other people, it means we're good friends and we're having fun.

We're not adverse to newbies. We just kind of expect that they at least attempt to get a feel for the board first by reading before posting, as I would at any new board I join.

(And can I add, the lack of moderation is the exact reason I hardly ever even look here. There's nobody to report objectionable posts/material to, and I've found enough here that I've wanted to report in the past to drive me away.)

I think it's also worth pointing out that, unless I've missed something Miike was simply asked to use punctuation in his posts. He's expressed disappointment that no one actually commented on the content of his posts but the fact is, they were pretty hard to read. It's not unusual for boards to have some expectations about how their members post - and just look at Whedonesque where you're really taken to task for missing out a capital letter or a full stop!

And yes, I used to post here all the time (although apparently so long ago I've forgotten my original log-in details!). It was the first Firefly Board I joined but gave up on it because, guess what, I found it was becoming "silly" . We all have different ideas as to what makes an enjoyable forum I guess.

Actually, the message board that I include in my sig (which is also British, though I'm not) gets very shitty about language - not so much typos but txt spk. I can't disagree with that, you've got no letter limit AND a whole keyboard in front of you - use the damn thing.

Here is an example of one of my apparently unreadable posts and i think people can then judge for themselves......."I just watched "30 days of night" on bluray it was quite average plotwise, very much like "assault on precinct 13" but with vampires. The film looked good though as the cinematography was great.I also recently rewatched "ichi the killer" which for me is one of the greatest modern superhero flicks ,and the film that got me reintrested in asian cinema after a lull for a few years, best asian film since "Battle royale".

ok here's another unedited post, but the point is i was told that all my post were unreadable and that only people with a basic grasp of english ,which apparently i have not according to the afore mentioned site ,may post.............The last films i saw where Django,a heavily stylised western from italy about a lone gun man who wanders into town with a coffin. Quentin Tarantino ripped off a few of the scenes in the movie most famously the cutting off of a bad guys ear. Also recently saw LadySnowblood which is a seventies samurai revenge flick of which tarantino borrowed heavily for the plotting of kill bill .Lastly saw Stalker again for the first time in ages this is a russian film regarded as a classic by critics and myself it is based on the Sturgatsky bros book "Road side picnic" which deals with the emergence and after effects of extraterrestrial visitors and a ringed off area called the zone in which the aforementioned stalkers enter to obtain artifacts of alien technology in all three very cool films .

The inital incoherent post said this:

lady snowblood it rocked tarantino ripped it off for kill bill ,dajango tarantino ripped parts of this aswell apparently . its seems like all films i like tarantino also likes which is bizzare as i cant see him being a browncoat but he probably is oh sorry just thoght you could poast about any film my bad

This really is a pointless argument as untill uk browncoats go through big changes starting at the top and looses some of it closed mindedness i wont be posting there again .All my thread intended to do was point out some fundamental flaws of the uk site ,which from the start seemed like it was the total reserve of a few closed minded ,pack mentality ,self appointed few. All I personally was trying to acheive was to be in touch with fans from my home country and to comunicate veiws and ideas with like minded people who share the same love of a great tv show .This instead was turned into a lambast of my own personal abilitys to express my self through the written word.............peace out

Well, as already mentioned above - we all get along. We've all known each other for years. So there won't be any "big changes" because we're all happy there.

We're not "closed minded", we just like to be able to understand the posters.

I disagree that you were pointing out "fundamental flaws", as those "flaws" are just your opinion, not fact. You said nobody replied to the content of your post - you've had explanations as to why. Nobody could understand your posts to reply to them.

You said there was bullying and closed mindedness - again, that's really just your opinion. You were politely requested to make your posts more readable, in an effort to provide us with something we could actually respond to, but instead you just got defensive and started arguing back.

It's just considered pretty bad form to join a long running, happy community and then demand they make changes to suit you. If you don't like it, don't post there, don't get angry about it!

Miike,

Sorry you felt you had a bad experience on the UK board but, quite frankly, you dictate the kind of experence you have anywhere you go in life not other people, so maybe you needed to sit back and watch what was going on for a while before you jumped right in with posts that others found very hard to understand.

Anyway, as you've already mentiond you won't be going back there so there's no point in coming over here and moaning about something you'll never have to deal with again. Quit bitching and move on.

Yes, but you've missed my point. That you still got angry about it over here in the first place - as Casualty says, just let it go.

I don't see how any of your "points" have been proved. I just don't like to see one of my favourite places to hang out being tarnished because of incorrect so-called facts being thrown around the place.

show me one of my incorrect facts that i have posted, all my points are my own personal opinion and experiences gained while being on that site for a short time. To be honest i would have let this thread die but i am only continuing to answer your own disinformation about myself, plus the thread title was uk browncoats no fun which is true how can you have fun when every time you post you get a snipy remark about your spelling p.s what if someone who was dyslexic tried to post on your site how would they be treated

And yes, I used to post here all the time (although apparently so long ago I've forgotten my original log-in details!). It was the first Firefly Board I joined but gave up on it because, guess what, I found it was becoming "silly" . We all have different ideas as to what makes an enjoyable forum I guess.

I don’t see the need to squabble about one site by dragging opinions about another.
If this place is ‘silly’ why are you here now?

I don’t think you’ll find many who think this site has posting troubles. The more ‘cliquey’ side of things is taken care of by dedicated threads – which are actually quite fun to read as long as they are not the only threads actually moving.

Exciting new crime

(And can I add, the lack of moderation is the exact reason I hardly ever even look here. There's nobody to report objectionable posts/material to, and I've found enough here that I've wanted to report in the past to drive me away.)

If you hardly even look here – how do you KNOW?

How far in the past? There are no threads/posts that I would describe in the same way except maybe this one. Not even the over-heated Real World Forum – and besides, there’s no need to go to that sub-forum if you are here for Firefly/Serenity.

Again this seems an unnecessary dig at the very site you are using.

oftentimes we manage to have those conversations without actually posting half of what we're thinking

Back in my time this was known as infra-dig. If you can’t understand new posts – have you ever wondered if they can understand yours?

Most of us have been there since the board began, so it might be hard for newbies

You see we are so un-moderated that actually we consider ‘newbie’ a very offensive term – and if you look around you will notice it doesn’t get used. If you dig into the correct sub-forum you will find the long thread where this was thrashed out (again) last year.

And you are overlooking the fact that someone may apparently be new – but might have been lurking, possibly for years, before deciding to post. A hostile or cliquey atmosphere will just prevent people from ‘officially’ joining. You both make a great deal over the idea that you’ve been around for a long time. Heads up – so have a LOT of us.

and just look at Whedonesque where you're really taken to task for missing out a capital letter or a full stop!

Which is also discouraging. Some people are DYSLEXIC and may struggle with their posts.
I was myself told off for a brief post with no capitals (like that is gorram important).
Ok, well as it happens I suffer from a medical condition that recurs from time to time (like now) and results in me only being able to use one side of my body. Typing is extremely hard – and I have to give up using capitals because I can’t see well enough to check I’ve used them correctly. (You have NO IDEA how hard I’m trying not to frakk up this post).

For someone who has been posting for 15 years – being told off by someone younger for a tiny error in amongst a horde of comments by other people is not just unfriendly, it’s ridiculous. I have left that site.

Nobody here uses text speak – and we are pretty patient with folk who have ‘personal’ styles of writing – because, you know what? If you encourage and support people then they stick around and gradually their language use improves.

Now Miike may post in a fashion that annoys you – and others may do too. So what?
Are they being offensive – are they swearing? (You’ll notice a distinct lack of curse words here – where we can gorram and go-se till the cows come home.
Obviously if you rile someone they get angry and they might post in an even more meretricious way – just to spite. I don’t condone such behaviour AT ALL – but the best thing is to prevent it in the first place.

The reason I favour FFF.Net is that not only are there long and in-depth threads about a show and a movie that I love but (as has been noted elsewhere here)this site is supportive and friendly from the get go. The ‘remit’ (if I can use that term) is never put anyone off – firefly needs fans, what’s gained from excluding people.

I can agree that Miike (and the person he was, I gather, defending) may well have posted in a way that you found difficult – but the content is quite obviously that of an enthusiast not someone coming to the table with no common interest.

I should apologise for the length of this post – but the last time I was this irritated and angered by a thread was at the UK Browncoats site.
Now – please, BOTH SIDES seem to be stuck in a truly tedious circle argument. Take a deep, deep breath and avoid each other from now on. Who CARES if a point has been made or not - by either injured party. What's to be gained here? Sweet FA.

Let this thread die and let everyone else just respond to whomsoever they like in time.

Uhm, because hardly ever and never are not the same thing? The site hasn't changed since I stopped checking it out regularly.

Miike was politely requested to post in a manner we could understand. And he got angry that he was being asked to do so.

The person he was defending, well, some of their posts actually WERE offensive.

I'm not trying to suggest that somebody being around for a long time makes them better, or have any more right to be a member. But at the same time, if a community is pre-existing and clearly runs in a particular way, happily, it's just good manners to respond in the same way.

If somebody has indeed been lurking for a long time and then still joins in conversations in a manner that doesn't fit, that makes it worse, in my eyes.

And when it comes to considering "newbie" an offensive term - in my opinion, that's a ridiculous frame of mind. People are new to places - doesn't make them any more or less valid, but they're still new, and that's all there is to it.

I think there are more people than you would expect who very much do think this board has "posting troubles", and that's why they don't post here. Myself included - I'm only here now because I don't like my "home" being slagged off without being given the right to respond. Which I am doing.

No, I can't say I waste time wondering if hypothetical people understand a conversation I'm having with somebody else. If such a person exists and they wish to know more, they're welcome to join in and ask. It's like being at a party and hearing a conversation between two friends. Those two people certainly aren't thinking, "Ooh, I hope everybody in the room can understand me!" when they're talking, just on the offchance somebody else is listening in. It's a public arena, so you're not going to discuss something private that you don't want the world to hear, but you can't possibly expect everybody to understand everything.

That's a completely different issue from not being able to understand the posts because of the way they are written. If somebody came to the UK Browncoat board and started speaking Spanish, I'd request they spoke English. It's exactly the same when we request people use punctuation so that we can understand what they're saying. It doesn't have to be perfect, just understandable!

Finally, this comment interested me:

Because I certainly remember finding this site incredibly hard to join in with, much moreso than other long-existing forums I have joined in the past.

And that's not even considering how hard this place is to navigate.
