I know 'cause I am using one right now to cover the gap between my last job's insurance ending and my new job's insurance starting. If I had chosen to not get temp health insurance and I got sick, I'd think it was my own supid fault for not getting insurance. So while it's really sad this woman is sick, she could easily have procured insurance for herself while she worked her own business. She made the choice not to get insurance and that sucks for her... I am not unsympathetic , but it's a bit like people who get a job without retirement benefits and don't put anything into savings or into a 401K and then getting all upset that they don't have retirement...( note to all even if it's like $20 a month start a 401K right now!!!) However I do think this country needs to get on the universal health care wagon.. it's ridiculous that we have to choose to work unfulfilling jobs, or sacrafice huge chunks of our paychecks in order to take care of basic needs like medical care. Every other civilized country has universal health care and yes their taxes are higher, but hey if you consider how much it costs employers to provide benefits and how much workers pay for them, it'd even otu right quick:) Plus those snotty insurance companies wouldn't be raking in billions per year ( almost as irritating as watching the record profits of the oil companies increase every quarter)

Quote:Originally posted by Zeek: I still worry about national healthcare too. Don't you think the government will regulate costs to death and make is so that the hospitals struggle to make money? I pretty much imagine our healthcare system taking a turn to be like our education system. Not enough money to provide good service. If the money dries up then the gifted people will find a different profession to pursue and we'll be stuck with lack luster medical care for all. That doesn't seem like a good alternative either.
