Heard on NPR this morning that there's a website dedicated to "Has destroyed the world yet?" & the one word answer:
NO
Made me laugh.

OK, seriously though... I've studied up on this a bit (physics enthusiast): Even if they manage to create a black hole by slapping a few dozen particles into each other at a realative 2x the speed of light (speed of light one way + speed of light the other = realative 2x speed of light even though the collision itself can only occur at a max 1C (things get wierd at these speeds, and your frame of reference is everything)), the hole will not have enough mass (mass generates gravity, gravity holds the hole together) to sustain itself, and will evaporate in a fraction of a second because of the repulsion of the protons (like poles repel. Force of repulsion is a function of the distance between the protons squared. Near zero distance between them = near infinite repulsion).
Theoretically, the smallest self-sustaining black hole would require a mass greater than that of Sol. A mass the size of our sun (even our entire solar system) ends it's existence as a supernova (almost burns out, lack of reaction allows gravity to implode the mass, increase in density produces huge increase in reactivity which casuses explosion (giant thermonuclear warhead). These guys just can't play with enough mass to pose more than a local (in the collision chamber) hazard.
Now that I'm thinking about it... It should be possible to create & sustain a black hole as long as you pump enough power into it to overcome the inherent repulsion... If it gets too big, or power is interupted, the hole tears itself apart. I wonder how big a bang that'd be? Worst case it'd be on the order of a thermonuclear detonation of identical reaction mass. Baseball sized mass of plutonium can take out most of a major metropolis, but these guys are playing with a few sub atomic particles at a time, not kilograms.

Sorry for the length. Someone clean up my recall of the theory if I'm in error please.

Oh yeah: Vump.

Right!...thinking very hard...sounds good to me. I read that Hawking's thinks they will fail, they appear to be looking for the "Higg's" particle.(not sure i got the name right) I know I got the words wrong, but he said,...it's the 'God' particle,...the 'thing' that powered the "Big Bang". Thats about all the science I know,...the test run appears to be good though....

Go to Yahoo, right now its on the news updates and its in the science section. I tried to post a linky, but it didn't work, sorry.

Vump and a nom at tv-tally and I think I see how we are losing to Jericho. I opened the page and Firefly had 184 votes so I voted and it said that Firefly has 184 votes and I made one vote during this time period. I did complain about htis in a thread title "what going on?" started by flowerlady. I also sent a pm to an administrator explaining how this also happened to me at 2pm

The good news is we are in the lead by fifty votes at stargate.

In the last six days we have closed the gap at weekinwhedom from 1141 to 1071.

Over at BBC, in the last week we have got Serenity from 39.51 percent of the vote to 39.58, while star wars went from 30.84 to 30.80 (some star wars fans are voting, but apparently they cannot muster much in the way of numbers.)

TVTally is still a challenge. Vote often over there.

I honestly am beginning to not care about tv-tally anymore because as I see it the site must be corrupt. I have voted there three times today being two from home and once from work and of the three times the count for Firefly had only incremented once, but my other two votes for Red Dwarf and Dr. Who have been counted. I have complained to them three times over the last two days and have not received any response to this so I suspect this site is foul and corrupt.

TV Tally isn't Rich Labonte's TV Vote, that's for gorram sure! But, despite the fair play issues, it's only casting a coupla votes a day, or so. I'll be more concerned if Jericho starts to surge a LOT (as it has in the past, which is when Jericho zoomed past Firefly in the overall standings); right now, it appears we have a (relatively) level playing field. If there are problems with the site, the other shows must be affected, too.

Bottom line is, I dun take TV Tally too seriously, but it's no skin off my teeth to drop in my votes for Firefly (and a coupla other shows). At least it's something to do, VUMP!

Ya, TVTally is not as clean as TVVote, but most people stumbling across it via Google, don't know that. All they note is which fans got their show into the top spot. That show is considered more likely to be viewed by potential new browncoats.

Jericho is currently ahead of us by 13 in the weekly vote, and more than two thousand overall.

vump - we have a closet kitty. Showed up months ago; took her in; got her shots; she hides behind the dryer in the laundry room as my 5 dogs are a problem. Well, mostly just the biggest one. Any advice on how to smooth the introductions would be appreciated.

Vump and even though I had no votes cast in this 6 hour time period it still didn't count my votes. It did say that I cast my three votes after I posted them but it didn't increment the numbers for the shows I clicked on. I think the tv-tally site is biased against firefly by looking for ip addresses of sites which vote for Firefly and then flagging them. I originally noticed that only my firefly vote wasn't being counted and now it looks like all of my votes are now being ignored.

Kitty is still hiding?
We have two big dogs (Red&White Siberian Husky is the small one), and four cats atm. Mostly they get along - dogs'll chase the cats down the hallway, cats'll ambush the dogs later.
Introductions were basically start the newest member in a closed room for a day or two to get used to the house sounds, smells, etc. and for the others to get used to the smell of the new one. Then open the door & let 'em sort things out. The new cat hides, everyone comes in to stare for a bit, then get tired & leave. The cat eventually comes out & explores a bit, runs back & hides again whenever feeling threatened. Eventually the cat learns about counter-tops, tables, and the top of the refridgerator. Then it begins planning ambushes.
If you think your dog intends to do harm (as opposed to playing), put it on a leash & correct it every time it goes for the cat. Make it clear that biting the kitty is not allowed. Not even a little bit.

thanks, FT! In the past I've HAD cats and dogs; but the cats I've had were relatively 'brave' and not fearful. This kitty has yet to jump up onto anything - including the washer and dryer. I will do the leash bit with the big dog that does want to bite her.

I am trying my best to help out but I am having troubles geting my votes to count. I think I may know why, because I turned on my coworkers to the tv-tally site and they sit right next to me in the hospital and maybe we share the same ip addresses.
