FireFly Sweet Tea Vodka
April 2008

Charleston South Carolina based FireFly Distillery recently launched a new flavored spirit, Sweet Tea Vodka. Well I've had their wine and it was fab so I'm betting the vodka is good:)
You know if you can buy it locally you could do a brisk business in online sales to those who can't:)

Found it! And the bottle looks even more shiny than the photo. It was right up front, so well hidden that I walked right past it! Gonna try the recipie from right there on the back label.

1/2 Firefly Vodka
1/2 spring water over ice ( Filtered Atlanta water will have to do )
Garnish w/ a twist of lemon. ( Hee hee, got that right after I got me the bottle! )

Back in a bit with a review.

How much did you have to pay for it ?

I was out for some tequila a little while ago , and the Firefly 'Sweet Tea' was pricey...

Oddly though , they didn't have the original muscadine-infused variety...

We've got some high alcohol taxes around here...

The best deals I recall on distilled spirits were in California...I've got some buds there , one of them will hook me up !

Let me know how you like that stuff , once you get into it...

It is a pretty bottle...

Well, it's definitly tea-ish....and they didn't skimp on the vodka. But being a beer guy by nature, I think my taste buds need a bit of re-calibraing.

Did I mention I prefer my tea sweet......VERY sweet ?

More testing tomorrow.

If you like your drinks sweet, try some scuppernong wine. It's a type of muscadine grape and is native to NC, SC, and Virginia. It's really sweet and sneaks up on you.

If you're a pirate or crew on a pirate like spaceship you might like this from a local winery:

http://www.duplinwinery.com/index.php?page=wines&wines=8&parent=1&wine
name=Queen%20Anne%C2%B4s%20Revenge

FYI, the Queen Anne's Revenge was Blackbeard's flag ship and the wreck was found several years ago just off the NC coast.

I wonder if anyone over at the distillery has any clue of what sort of potential customers they have w/ us Browncoats. Certainly, the color of the bottle and the art work sure fit near enough.

As Mal said, "wouldn't be a thing

That being said, until further review, the bottle seems to be about the most appealing thing for me. Not being a coneseur of finer distilled drinks that don't make ya go blind, this stuff is potable, but not one of the finer things I've tasted. But I'm willing and able to give it another try.

And anther. And another.....

What ever it takes.

Well, that's one vodka this vodka-freak definitely will not be drinking. Shame given the reference.

"Vodka may be distilled from any starch/sugar-rich plant matter; most vodka today is produced from grains such as sorghum, corn, rye or wheat. Among grain vodkas, rye and wheat vodkas are generally considered superior. Some vodka is made from potatoes, molasses, soybeans, grapes, sugar beets and sometimes even byproducts of oil refining or wood pulp processing" (wikipedia)

so, might they just be using it with the grapes in the distilling process? it is *sweet* tea vodka after all :-P sweet tea is uber sweet

Muscadine grapes are super sweet anyway. If you've ever had any muscadine or scuppernong (a type of muscadine grape native to NC,SC and southern VA) wine you'll think you're drinking sweet juice then Whoa Nelly! it hits you.

I was allowed to sip it as a young person by my grandmother at Thanksgiving and Christmas. It was considered a "ladies wine" and was also served with dessert. There are several wineries around here that make a very good muscadine wine but none of them have branched out to vodka.

Meh, the way I read "and infused with American tea grown on Wadmalaw Island and sugar cane grown in Louisiana" it sounds like they make the vodka, then put tea and sugar in it. If it's sweeter than normal vodka, it's not just sugar being used in the fermentation, it's sugar added afterwards, the way you would pour those little packets of sugar into your ice tea at a restaurant.

Beyond my own medical restrictions against processed sugar, sweet vodka just seems wrong to me. I guess I'll be sticking the to classics. /Shrug

/facepalm

Right, I know. I quoted your post that started this thread. I assume you got the quote from the official webpage or something, but it's at the top of the thread so I quoted it so that people would know what the hell I was talking about. Didn't mean to imply that you cooked that one up on your own.

And second, I know the sugar is for the tea. That's what I'm complaining about! They added sugar to vodka, thereby making it no longer vodka. It isn't vodka anymore, it's tea-flavored Smirnoff Ice.

Some people CAN'T have sugar. Some people prefer to mix their vodka with other things, like cranberry juice, orange juice, tomato juice, olive juice, etc etc. My complaint was that this company took a perfectly good vodka -- not to mention a perfectly good name -- and ruined it by putting sugar in it!

Seriously, sugar is in frickin everything these days. I would like to be able to at least join my fellow Browncoats in a glass of FireFly vodka but I can't because these idiots put sugar in it. Oh well, sucks for me. Like I said, I won't be buying it.
