Somebody sent me this e-mail regarding a conflict of interest at McCain's ranch in AZ.

Wasn't it McCain that spoke so eloquently about change and reforming the cronyism and "politics as usual" in Washington. Oh right, Sedona Arizona is not Washington, so it doesn't count (my muscular buttocks it doesn't count).

Could you imagine the uproar had Obama gotten that special treatment?

....And you will know there names!

Sorry, don't see what the big deal is. The Secret Service asked for better coverage, in a remote area, where communication is a problem for them. The Post is trying to make it something bigger than it is. This is SOP for anyone under their protection, and if Obama had a remote home like this, he would receive the same treatment. Last time I checked, Washington and Chicago have good cell coverage!

Cindy, being the one that runs their households (while John does his job), did what she needed to do to address the Secret Service's concerns and her needs as a individual customer. Big deal.

Guess Verizon's "Can You Hear Me Now", complete coverage claims, only counts for everyone but the Secret Service and our candidates. Why would they need phones in a remote area?

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

Well then you don't care that AT&T or Verizon get special treatment from the next president of America. Then all is good.

Can you hear me now?

How is this treatment any more special than any other customer asking for same? Because her husband is a candidate, she's not allowed to ask for coverage with her carriers?

I've got friends who live in L.A., in a not remote but blocked canyon. They got the same "portable tower" for their service. They didn't even donate property for said tower and the carrier (at their own expense) had to get an easement from the city to place the tower on public lands. Was that special treatment, or just their cell carrier providing service to one of their better customers?

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

On the surface it doesn't amount to much, but when your on a Senate Committee that, as one of its functions, oversees the FCC (who in turn oversees telecommunications companies) and can rule in favor or against policies that would directly affect them, well that could look like a conflict of interest.

It is not being suggested here by me that McCain is a terrorist, or a crook. It just looks like there may be some special interest and lobbyist at work here - which McCain is so adamantly against in the slimy corridors of Washington, D.C. (I'm paraphrasing his words).

You know what strikes me as somewhat peculiar - wasn't he a big part of the "Washington elite" especially given the fact that he's a multimillionaire (who's wife is a rich tycoon's hieress). Ok, forget that for a moment, do you honestly believe that AT&T or Verizon would give Joe Sixpack the same consideration as a John "Got Money" McCain?

Well - that answers THAT question: The RWED is exothermic.

It was like you couldn't contain that much fun in one place when we got here!

Wash, I just couldn't let this pass without giving my favorite exothermic/endothermic argument.

Quote:

Dr. Schambaugh, of the University of Oklahoma School of Chemical Engineering, Final Exam question for May of 1997. Dr. Schambaugh is known for asking questions such as, "why do airplanes fly?" on his final exams. His one and only final exam question in May 1997 for his Momentum, Heat and Mass Transfer II class was: "Is hell exothermic or endothermic? Support your answer with proof."

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following:

"First, We postulate that if souls exist, then they must have some mass. If they do, then a mole of souls can also have a mass. So, at what rate are souls moving into hell and at what rate are souls leaving? I think we can safely assume that once a soul gets to hell, it will not leave.

Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for souls entering hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Some of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, then you will go to hell. Since there are more than one of these religions and people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all people and souls go to hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in hell to increase exponentially.

Now, we look at the rate of change in volume in hell. Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in hell to stay the same, the ratio of the mass of souls and volume needs to stay constant. Two options exist:

If hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter hell, then the temperature and pressure in hell will increase until all hell breaks loose.
If hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until hell freezes over.

So which is it? If we accept the quote given to me by Theresa Manyan during Freshman year, "that it will be a cold night in hell before I sleep with you" and take into account the fact that I still have NOT succeeded in having sexual relations with her, then Option 2 cannot be true...Thus, hell is exothermic."

The student, Tim Graham, got the only A.

Ah, the very anecdote that inspired my post! It's been a couple-three years since I saw it in its entirety - thanks, DeadLock!

And here I just read that particular anectdote for the first time this morning, and then stumbled across it again. Odd.

"I thoroughly disapprove of duels. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet place and kill him."
