What moment(s) in Firefly made you jump and/or exclaim holy crap? (or something holy crap related)

When i got my box set (in late March, it was a birthday present, man, i love birthdays!)
I finally watched all the way through and the first time watching Objects in Space (besides its original air date) after Mal says "We're totally alone" and then Early's ship jumps in to the picture, i jumped because i'd forgotten about it... and then immediately afterwards i remembered that i'd done the same thing the very first time i'd watched it.

there was one other during Serenity but i'm not sure what it was...

Do you have any moments that just scared/startled you?

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
MAL: This is my scrap of nowhere. You go on and find your own.
SAFFRON: You can't just leave me here, on this
lifeless piece of crap moon...
MAL: Sure I can.
SAFFRON: I'll die.
MAL: Well, as a courtesy, you might start
getting busy on that, cause all this chatter ain't doin' me any kindness.

Yep, when Simon starts the autopsy on Tracey and Tracey wakes up and Mal jumps on him to restrain him and then *gasp* Mal is sitting on a naked dead man! That was shocking/fascinating on many levels.

A lot of things that Jubal Early said also really got to me. They didn't make me jump, but they were so damn creepy, the way he realizes so easily everyone's fears. When he's threatening Kaylee, it's just so darn scary.

Haha actually I was only half surprised (if that is an actual state) but when simon was making the insition so veeery slowly I had a feeling something was amiss...

"Ariel". Last Scene. Mal and Jayne.

There was a cast sheet leaked on the internet the summer before the show premiered that listed Adam Baldwin as recurring, signed for only 10 eps or something. So I figured then he was the Doyle/Tara/Jesse of the series -- the "regular" Joss loves to kill off to mindfuck us. Obviously, Adam's recurring status has since proven inaccurate, but I was watching that last scene in "Ariel" with my jaw on the floor convinced Mal would space Jayne.

My first reaction when he in fact did not was disappointment, but it has since become one of my favorite scenes. Ever.

The ep with the dead body hitting the wind-shield on the Bridge scared the S--T out of me as I was watching it in the dark and for the first time as well!

Reavers like to hide in the shadows. So watch your backs y'all!

That last scene in Ariel is by far my favorite scene as well. I think it goes to show how Mal actually does in fact keep his crew in line and keep their loyalty.

Forgot to say my Holy Crap! moment. When I first watched Out of Gas, and Mal falls on the metal grate and then you see him bleeding, that was a Holy Crap! Moment for me because I honestly had no idea how they were going to finish the episode, plus it didn't help that it was my first episode ever watched and didn't realize that people got shot all the time.

That scene just doesnt work for me. The mass of a human body impacting a spacecraft at spacecrafty velocities...... would probably have torn a hole in the hull at the very least the body should have gone S P L A T T!!!!

Howdy,

For me, it was during Bushwhacked when we all look up and see what the Reavers did.

Also, the body/windshield scene makes me jump every time, even though I am expecting it.

actually, i agree. for the sake of realism the body should have shattered or something like that, right? it should be really cold in space, the body should be frozen. for the sake of drama, it has more impact (no pun intended) the way it was done.

as for "holy crap" moment, i would have to say when Mal shoots Dobson in the head. it was so quick and although it was the practical thing to do, it was unexpected! it certainly scared River! hahahahaha!

If I'm going for something that hasn't been mentioned yet, I just about died when Inara announced she was leaving in whatever episode that was.

I love everyone's holy crap moments, but mine was totally when Niska cut off Mal's ear. I was totally squirming while watching that.

-Seeing Kaylee shot and apparently die in Serenity.
-The body in Niska's office in The Train Job, and his henchman getting sucked into Serenity's engines.
-Mal stabbing Atherton Wing repeatedly in Shindig (followed by the immortal lines: "You didn't have to wound that man." 'Yeah, I know. That was just funny.').
-The opening of Out of Gas.
-The torture sequences in War Stories. Also, River's massacre.
-The corpse in the parcel at the start of The Message (along with the greatest line in Firefly history: "Why'd y'all order a dead guy for?")
-Serenity speaking with River's voice in Objects in Space.

My truest holy crap moment was during the first half of Serenity; I believe the crew had landed on Persephone, and somewhere amongst all that "here's the world we landed on" stuff, I realised that this show was far, far greater than I could possibly have imagined.

My first 'Holy Crap' moment on Firefly was in Serenity, when you see all of those Alliance ships landing at the beginning. You just get the feeling that Mal's world is ending...
But the one that really sticks in my mind is in 'War Stories', when River just kills those three guys without raising a sweat. I actually uttered "Holy S..." when that happened.

-------------------------------------------
"BADGER: You think you're better than other people.
MAL: Just the ones I'm better than."
-------------------------------------
"MAL: Gotta say, doctor, your talent for alienatin' folk is near miraculous.
SIMON: Yes, I'm very proud."

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

A couple of mine:

-Bushwacked: the body hitting the cockpit glass. I wasn't expecting it & it made me jump a bit.

-Heart of Gold: when the laser beam starts cutting through the walls, narrowly missing Mal.

-War Stories: when Niska cuts off Mal's ear.

-War Stories: when River guns down the three goons w/ three shots & her eyes closed.

When Simon, River and Jayne are running away from the Blue Hand Men and you see the Brain Melter used for the first time. When I heard the fed's screaming in pain it just wigged me out. Also, when Kaylee gets shot in Serenity.

A lot of these have already been mentioned, but...

-- In Serenity, when Lawrence-the-Fed has the gun to River and Mal just walks in and shoots him and keeps walking. (Also, my first "oh my god, this captain kicks moment" since I never saw the show on TV and so I actually got to see the pilot as the first episode.)

-- In War Stories when River shoots the 3 guys without looking.

-- In Ariel when the blue hands use that device to melt everyone from the inside out.

-- In Ariel when Mal is going to kill Jayne. I can't remember the exact moment when I said "Holy crap" (or whatever stronger phrase I used in its place ), but I it was definitely a tense scene.

"I'll be in my bunk."

Awesome! That's a great holy crap moment. I just hooked my brother's family on the show this weekend (takin' my DVDs on the road! ) and I think that he had the same moment you did. When the crew was walking around Persephone and you get your first real feel for the show's 'verse, I think he was hooked at that very moment.

My Holy Crap moment has to be when the Ambassador comes aboard in "War Stories" and we find out that Inara has female clients.
