So, six years ago today, I watched the season (and, unfortunately, series) finale of FIREFLY on Fox.

It's only fitting, then, that the Virtual Firefly series gang over at www.stillflying.net presents our Season Two finale today, to commemorate the six year anniversary. (Incidentally, we're about a week shy of the three year anniverary of our own project).

For those of you who are not familiar with our project, www.stillflying.net is a fan-based site dedicated to a "virtual continuation" of Joss Whedon's "Firefly" in the form of scripts of additional episodes. We've rounded out Season One, completing it with seven new episodes (including a season finale based on "Serenity: Those Left Behind" from Dark Horse Comics).

Season Two is dedicated to exploring the question, "What would things have been like if Joss Whedon had been able to tell the story of Serenity in 22 episodes rather than 2 hours?" Our story takes you to most of the same places the movie does, but the path along the way will be a little different, and a bit longer.

I'm proud to say that in the past three years, we've written 29 episode-length scripts... which is almost twice as many as Joss had!

Although Season Two tells the story of the movie in more depth and detail, our project will be blazing new paths in 2009 when we start Season Three and take a look at the crew's adventures after Miranda.

Meantime, check out our finale, "Wake." And if you haven't already given us a try, why not do it? With almost 30 episodes averaging about 50 pages each, that's 1500 pages of new Firefly material for you're reading enjoyment!

We can't show you exactly how Joss Whedon would've done it, but we can tell you...

"Here's how it might have been..."

Thanks for the head's up. I've really enjoyed this series. Do you all plan to continue with Season 3?

Edit: Ok, I just read the rest of your post and my question was answered! Looking forward to Season 3!

We actually already have much of the Season Three laid out already (at least in terms of overall story arcs, brief synopses of episodes, etc). Now, it's just a matter of finding the time and getting the band back together!

... fully loaded, safety off...

It's a given - every single fan of Firefly will find themselves at the same darkish place one day and ask: now what? If you're thinking, "no thanks, I don't like fan fiction that much..." think again.

Just read a couple, and see what you think.

Here's a sample from the beginning of the last ep of season 2, it coincides with the end of the movie:

INT. BLACK ROOM ALCOVE – DAY

CLOSE ON RIVER TAM’S closed eyes.

She opens them, looks slyly side-to-side.

PULL BACK to find that River stands in the middle of the room, surrounded by Reaver corpses. She holds two Reaver blades, is bloody but unbowed.

Industrial-strength CONSTRUCTION MACHINES—little more than half-visible silhouettes behind the mess—have torn open the wall behind her, leaving a gap filled with rubble, smoke, and fire.

River tenses but does not turn as heavily-armed ALLIANCE SOLDIERS come through the smoke.

A half dozen. A dozen.

More.

IN THE HALLWAY FACING THE ALCOVE

MALCOLM REYNOLDS looks down at ZOE and JAYNE as if to say “Now what?”

INARA crouches protectively over the unconscious SIMON TAM and KAYLEE, and BEN HICKS looks like he’s reached his limit.

IN THE ALCOVE

The soldiers pour in and circle around River, full of nervous energy, all of them yelling at once, pointing their rifles every which way.

SOLDIER #1
Drop your weapons!

SOLDIER #2
Drop ’em now!

IN THE HALLWAY

Mal moves forward....

PLATONIST

I enjoyed reading, very canonical, and decidedly NOT Your Mama's fanfic.

The conversations between the Operative and the different crew members stand out.

I especially liked the resolution between Inara and the Operative. I originally wasn't sure of the implications a subplot like this would bring to her subsequent arc, but I'm guessing it provided an opportunity to illustrate that it's not just Serenity, the ship, that she is finds herself in love with, as she turns down his offer of genuine freedom in favor of flying with Mal on his heap of a ship. Freedom is in the choice, like they say.

I don't want to spill anymore spoilers for those that haven't read yet, but I'm happy with Zoe's choice, also.

And, I don't know how you will continue into season three, a difficult job, indeed. Joss has left little clues to where he was going with this story and he seems to zag when everyone else zigs. And it's completely autonomous from his other work, so good luck with that.

Hey, we're a headline! Awesome!

I'm glad that folks seem to be enjoying. This was a tough episode to do, especially on the heels of so much action. A real change of pace, in many ways.

The Operative-Inara thing... If you go back to the ORIGINAL thread, before the project started, when it was just a couple of people tossing around ideas about what they'd do with the Serenity storyline as 22 episodes... Way back then, one of the first ideas I pitched was the idea of a deeper, potentially romantic relationship between Inara and the Operative. I like to think it was very "Joss", and played out in a pretty satisfying way (much of the credit for that goes to staff writer Katie Fiorino, who was sort of the Inara-Operative "specialist," even in many eps she didn't write).

We did make a brief attempt at audio recordings, but the effort didn't really get off the ground floor due to lack of voice actors.

Looking ahead to Season Three: I kinda wish we could have it written and out to you guys now. We have a lot of the season laid out already. I could give you brief synopses for most of the episodes (but of course, I WON'T ), and in some cases, we know a lot more than just a brief synopsis. I know exactly how the season begins and ends. Now, it's just a matter of writing those 1100 pages to fill it out!

Without giving TOO much away, here's what you're going to see: at least one new crewmember, some of Inara's past, at least one visit home for at least one character, and the return of some characters from the original television series and our Season Two.

Obviously, there's going to be some adjustments for the crew as a whole (and River in particular), but I'm also hoping to give a little more spotlight time to Inara and the much-abused Simon.

Hope you're enjoying. Please be a little forgiving of our First Season stuff--it took us a little while to really find our stride I think.
