I was watching Safe on my BR version and noticed something I guess I overlooked dozens of times before.

When River is dancing, happy free and all lovely and beautiful, while Mal, Jayne and Book are caught up in a gun battle with the cattle rustlers. I noticed that Book gets shot, she continues to dance and it's not until Mal looks to find Book has been shot that River then "senses" something has gone horribly wrong with the meeting with the rustlers.

What immediately came to my mind is that this is the first sign that River and the Captain have a connection, one that Mal cannot explain, cause even Zoe tells him that Jayne is right about leaving the "fugees" and having a simpler life.
What do you guys think?

I think it was more an aesthetic device. Revealing Book's injury is supposed to be a surprise, so showing him get shot, showing River react and THEN having Mal leaning over him like that... doesn't really work.

Not to mention, River may well not be reacting to the shooting of Book. In fact, I think it is far more likely that she is reacting to the approach of the kidnappers than grab Simon mere moments later.

I just watched this one over the holiday and I don't think IMO that it is a connection to Mal, but I do think that she senses BOTH Book being shot and the kidnappers. Both senses at once confuse her already confused mind so she doesn't really know how to react. This, I think, is why when she follows Simon into the woods she thinks it's some kind of game, because she hasn't been able to, or doesn't know how to process the information she has been given, so doesn't realise what is going on.
