Could you imagine some 20 years later being able to say that you never quite relinguished your rights to a story you had no intention of producing?

But now that Warner Bros. is about to release the finished product, in steps our good friends at Fox to scream bloody murder. Something smells mighty fishy here. It's deja vu all over again. This certainly has Firefly in the ointment written all over it. They see the type of cult following this movie has and want in. What could they possibly tell the judge that will convince him that 20 years after the fact (and not having so much as a nickle in the dime) to grant them the restraining order.

I've never heard of a contract in perpetuity. Has Fox made any attempt at producing this movie in that time? I don't think that a major studio like Warner's is going to spend millions on a movie without first checking to make sure every i is dotted and every t is crossed.

If I were the judge, I would tell Fox to cough up half the production costs or bow out.

Bottom line is money talks, BS walks.

Fox says it will try to stop 'Watchmen'
Published: 12/29/08, 9:05 PM EDT

LOS ANGELES (AP) - An attorney for 20th Century Fox says the studio will press its case to delay the release of "Watchmen," but a rival studio says it plans to release the film as scheduled.

U.S. District Court Judge Gary Feess last week agreed with Fox that Warner Bros. had infringed its copyright by developing and shooting the superhero flick, casting some doubt on its March 6 release date.

Feess said Monday he plans to hold a trial Jan. 20 to decide remaining issues.

Fox claims it never fully relinquished story rights for the graphic novel from its deal made in the late 1980s, and sued Warner Bros. in February. Warner Bros. contended Fox isn't entitled to distribution.

Warner Bros. said in a statement released Monday afternoon that it won't move the movie's release date and still thinks it will win the case, either at trial or through an appeal.

Here's the article--should have posted it in the first place.

Thought some people might be interested in being kept up to date with this.

Producer Lloyd Levin is the first to speak out on the ongoing WB/Fox legal battle over the film.

Very interesting open letter if you have the time to read it. As I commented on JoBlo:

"What I want to know is this; who owns the rights?! Because a lot of people make it sound like Fox still owns some rights, but I can't believe that WB would be stupid enough to not buy all the rights before going ahead with this, since it's been thrown around between studios so much.

This is WB's movie, regardless of whether Fox has hidden that it has the rights until such a time that they can claim some money.

And to those who are asking "Why does everyone automatically assume Fox is in the wrong?"

Read the previous C'mon Hollywood article. Fox are gorram idiots.

They need to drop this case, and restructure their company, hire new people, so that Fox starts to make quality films and isn't solely concerned with making the maximum amount of $$$ possible."
