I've noticed many people here have expressed a liking for the hat Jayne wore in War Stories and probably other eps. I happened to catch a picture of a similar looking hat advertised in a magazine today and thought I'd share the link if anyone is interested.

SBWatcher:

Thanx, but wrong hat. Peeps are interested in the hat Jayne's mother knitted him and sent via parcel post; he received it on port call in the "Message" episode. It may be seen with, without, then again with straw stuck in it, in what may or may not be a continuity error (much heated debate on the topic on this very board; luckily, no bloodshed, yet).

The hat type is a 'tuque', or what Americans from south of the (Canadian) border otherwise refer to as a 'ski cap'. Here's a definition, from Wikipedia:
Quote:

A tuque or touque (French: tuque) is a knitted hat, originally usually wool, that is designed to provide warmth in winter. Sometimes considered Canada's national hat, all tuques are tapered and brimless, and they are often topped with pom-poms.

The word "tuque" is not etymologically related to the name of the chef's toque, although "tuque" is sometimes spelt "toque" (though still pronounced /tuk/) by assimilation.

During the 1837 Patriotes Rebellion a red tuque became a symbol of French-Canadian nationalism. Today some consider tuques to be somewhat lacking in sophistication, though they are indispensable in cold climates. The most famous media characters to sport this kind of hat are the SCTV characters, Bob and Doug McKenzie.

There are many tuques (sounds like 'two-ks', or 'too-ks'), but none quite as fine as the one Jayne sports, letting people know that he knows no fear, y'know?. A similar design -- for those who knit -- may be found here http://www.bitchinknits.com/page125.htm .

The high peak point with pom-pom, ear flaps and chin ties are what separate Jayne's tuque from garden-variety 'American' ski caps.

Respectfully,

zoid

WREN

If anyone wants a Jaynes knitted hat go to this site:

http://dryope.typepad.com/superfly/

The pattern is at the bottom of the page with details about wool etc. If you can't knitthen the site owner was selling them at cost. I got one and it is really good. (I showed it to Nathan and Summer at a con and they also thought it was excellent.)

I also got the Jayne hat made for me with the straw and the note. I just about cried. The note hangs on my kitchen bulletin board (next to the big Firefly pic from Starlog) and I have worn my hat proudly till it got too hot to do so. MAJOR thanks, it's a gorram thing of beauty.
