I think it's pretty funny how both groups of fans get so excited when they're up and then claim the others are cheating when they're down. This week there's obviously cheating going on by both groups, as the numbers have jumped by ridiculous amounts at a time for both shows over the last few days. Another sign of the fact that this poll isn't very reliable.

(And I never turn my cookies off - I need them for too many websites. And I just vote from one computer with one ISP. Still, you shoot fast enough you get your votes in, every six hours.)

The Rangers Strike Back, But Not Enough

We are now less than 2,000 behind Jericho (and their fans, known as rangers). But they are on to us, and voting much more heavily. Where's our lurker from the Jericho boards? What's going on over there?

We gained 151 votes on Jericho last week (240 the previous week). Overall the total vote at the beginning of the week is Jericho 44672 (44281 last week), Firefly 42709 (42167 last week) We are 1963 behind, versus 2114 a week ago. A year ago, we were ahead. Over the last few weeks, we have been closing the gap.

The absentee operator of TVTally, or someone with sysadmin privs, showed up in January to do some site maintenance. Several things have changed. First, the cookie monster has been tamed somewhat. By using a browser with cookies turned off, you can now only vote three times for one show every six hours, not six times. Second, the message boards have disappeared. This was the only way, in theory, for the site admin and users to communicate (no one ever responds when tvtally@gmail.com is used). Now it's all gone (and I posted the last message, last November, I hope that wasn't the cause). Thought there was a third fix, but no. The weekly totals are not yet correctly returning to zero, but they are returning to some older dataset. This nonsense began in January, where tvtally weekly numbers first did not roll over to zero. Instead what showed up was larger numbers, with Jericho in the lead. Many other shows got numbers other than zero. This does not have any impact on the overall totals. It's just confusing.

If you turn off cookies on your browser, when you go to TVTally, you can vote up to three (used to be six) times (and for more than one show, or all for one show). You can also vote more than once in six hours (unpredictable, tends to happen early in the day, and after 6 PM). Some consider this cheating, some don't. Either you're a cookie monster, or you ain't.

Not cheating, just knowing the quirks of the system. You can vote every hour or so, if you use a browser with cookies turned off. I got a copy of Chrome (the new Google browser) and just use it for TVTally (with the cookies turned off). That way, one IP address can apparently generate 20-30 votes a day for one show. Not a whole lot different than what you could do on TVVote (where you could vote once an hour, for a whole bunch of shows.)It appears that the current TVTally race is being conducted by 10-20 fans on each side. No cheating. No hordes of fans. Just a few dedicated flans keeping at it.

That wouldn't explain when one side or the other jumps by 30-60 votes over a few minutes. I know we've each only got a small number of rabid voters, but I doubt either is coordinated enough to get them all to get their three votes in all at the same time. And both, over the last couple of days, have been growing in jumps, not steadily. But I guess all we can do is keep voting!

Oh well, if anyone on this side knows how this is being done please tell us through pms so we can alter the effects.

This sort of reminds me of a cheat someone from Sweden did before the internet was around where he was accessing my friend’s BBS from Sweden for free by hacking the phone system so his long distance call appeared as if it were originating from somewhere else. The man from Sweden offered my friend the software to perform this, but my friend was not going to get into that. I think someone here is able to mask their i.p. address in a similar fashion to the phone system hack of the early 1990s.

I think the weekly reset is probably going back to last summer or fall, when we had a sudden jump in numbers and strange voting. If we soon see unknown shows way ahead at the beginning of the week, then that would confirm it.

For now, if we just catch up then we're ahead in the total. Of course, the way Jericho's guy in Sweden votes (and I suspect he's IM'd and taught others), it may be another crazy week...
