I was just reading the 'european browncoat' thread, and realised that nothing seems to be happening about this shindig idea. Is anyone seriously up for it? Even if we just hire out a room, grab a TV and watch Our Mrs Reynolds, could still be good?

Or is there something being planned in another forum somewhere, or a different thread?

As I said from the other post - I'm from Oxford - and as so many people seem to be from round here I would be up for a Shindig either here or London - Heathrow is particuarly easy for me to get to with 24 hour transport.........

Id probably be up for a shindig as long as it was planned in advance so Id have time to make plans (especially if it was down south)

I'd think a UK based european shindig would be a great idea.

if it should be easy to attend for non-UK europeans it would be best to host it around London-Stansted somewhere. as RyanAir uses this airport as their homebase and they have the most flights to and from there to all over europe:
http://www.ryanair.com/

is there a browncoat somewhere in the London area who would like to organise tomething?

I'd probably attent if possible. haven't seen London yet. I'm German by the way. from Nuernberg, southern Germany.

Right - well so far London seems most sensible. It's easy to get there from pretty much anywhere, but the question should probably be *where*? I can't think of anywhere particularly firefly-themed... Any ideas?

Oh, and when? At some point in Summer, when it's nice and sunny, presumably. But not in the middle of the tourist season when prices will go up...

Vaguey.

Yes! Very up for a UK shindig. I'm pretty flexible on location. Either at home (near Manchester) or Uni (Oxford), London is very accessible - although, as someone's already mentioned, London is much with the pricey for those who would need to stay that night and/or buy drinks.

Another thought is that we could do a small, preliminary shindig just as a pub meet somewhere, rather than hiring a room first time out.

/ pure intentions, juxtaposed /

Oooh - there are plenty of us in Oxford, by the sounds of things. I'm studying here too - what subject are you doing, etc?

And yeah, I think a preliminary shindig may be a very good thing - particularly if there are so many people around this area (I count 5 Oxford-area people so far)...

I'd try and get to one wherever, though Birmingham might be a better idea than London as it's central and would be cheaper than most places down London. I also like the idea of Oxford, it's harder for me to get to but I love the place.

Hi

I'm new to this board, and almost as new to Firefly. FWIW I'd definitely be in favour of a UK shindig.

I'm in the Hampshire/Berksire/Surrey border area, so Oxford, Swindon and London are all good. Though hey, for the chance to talk about Firefly with people who feel the same way, I'd probably go to Edinburgh!

I'm doing an MPhil in medieval Islamic history. I'm at Wolfson, the college miles out of town that no-one can ever find.

tbh London prob. would be the best although it is expensive for hotels and the like the outside areas (nearby heathrow like Staines and Chertsey) aren't actually that much more expensive than else where, there's a nice hotel with restraunt (sp? lack of sleep) in Chertsey which is handy for Thorpe Park called the boat house or something like which last time I stayed there was same price as up here and I stay far enough away from Glasgow that it should be classed as cheap.

There are few places that would be good for a shindig unless it was for a convention style and tbh that is way beyond the scope of most ppl (and can be mighty expensive - any really rich ppl here ? :p ) so some sort of activity wether it be goto a pub or somewhere with a private room and play the DVD's a few drinks/dinner or something.

If it was in london then those of us a while away would prob be looking at something like -

Friday evening arrive - meet anyone else there.
Saturday am - Meet up in the morning around 11'ish goto pub/place with private room and or big screen even if it's just a meeting room at one of the bigger hotels they usually aren't too expensive at the weekends.
Saturday pm (till 5/6) - Firefly DVD interjected with talking and anything else that can be thought of.
Saturday evening dinner followed by drinking and more talking.
Sunday either travel home or day trip to London or theme park then travel home

But that's just a suggestion.
I'll look into prices and the like for hotels and stuff just to give an idea.

Cool - yeah, I'm at Jesus doing my BA in Classics. Medieval Islamic history sounds interesting - but I guess you probably agree, doing you MPhil in it and so on... :) Is that thesis-based, or taught?

Not sure if anyone else on the board is from Oxford Uni as such. Do you do much sci-fi stuff? Member of OUSFG, etc?

Heb, my fiance lives there and runs a business. I love the town but find it a little slow-paced compared to where I live, and also quite expensive.

I am familiar with Old Town, the shopping center, and the outlet mall. We buy groceries at Waitrose. That's about it. :)

What bookshop do you work in?

I work in a Waterstones store.

I was gonna say a lot of people take the mick out of Swindon but actually it's not that bad. It's certainly improving.

We actually are in the middle of our literature festival which is about the most cultured thing Swindon has ever done. Also we just had an Italian market come visit the centre. These would never have happened in Swindon a few years ago.

If you are familiar with Old Town you've got one up on me; I tried to drop someone off in the town centre last night and ended up driving round Old town for half an hour - completely lost.

Have to say I don't know of a big browncoat community in Swindon though.

Sounds like a great plan.....

Can't wait to hear costs etc so we can start to decide on a date etc!

Do those of us in Oxford/Swindon want to meet up anyway independantly of this?

I think it would be nice to get regional shindigs going - especially so that by the time the movie is out next year we can all go to the cinema together!!

Been a Firefly fan for a while, and have come back from Fusion and have convention blues at the mo ....

Bit new to all of this but am definately up for something somewhere - currently residing in Reading but willing to travel - its pretty central to London, Chertsey, Swindon and Oxford so anywhere is cool with me.

Will be great to meet some other Firefly fans.

A shindig (or at least pre-shindig mini-shindig) in Oxford seems to look quite likely - perhaps just meeting up somewhere with a TV and going from there?

I can probably get my hands on an area w/tv (my college has a couple of lecture rooms + digital projectors which I could attempt to use) but does anyone else have a better idea for somewhere to meet? I can't really think of anywhere informal and non-intimidating around here...

Great idea and hope it all goes well for those as can make it. What about (for those with families) a picnic or something (maybe we can do some silly folk dances as in Safe and OMR)plus viewing of dvds later and an early finish? Perhaps in a college town over the summer. Okay it would take too much organising but it's nice to dream about. Tried really hard to avoid making any reference to a ceilidh (is that how you spell it?)

Picnic, etc, would be easy to organise - there's plenty of good groundspace in Oxford for that kind of stuff, and a family-style event could be a bit different from the (admittedly very few) meets I've attended in the past.

Quote:

No idea how it's spelt, but I think the prospect of folk dancing is potentially likely to convince people that meeting up isn't quite "their thing" :)

Maybe I'm underestimating the open-mindedness of the average browncoat though...

I live in the North of England, not sure if there is anyone else in my area, but a good place to have mini-shindigs or even just meet other Firefly fans is at conventions. There is one in a weeks time in fact, a starfury one Hyperion, and I know of a few Firefly fans going to that one, then there are other cons later this year, and the big one, the Serenity con next year, which is apparently going to be timed to take place not long after the movie comes out over here, so I guess that will be the really really big shindig here. Maybe see some of you around, I'll be the tall one by the bar.

I would love to come to a shindig in or near London, but I can't afford any more trips to London this year. I've been to one convention and have three more to go.

I'd be up for folk dancing, but alternatives might be wise.

I've been to a couple of Danish Slayerfests, and two of the guys there had made a Buffy trival pursuit that was extremely popular. Has anyone made a Firefly TP? I bet that would be popular at shindigs.

Firefly STILL hasn't been on Danish TV despite TV2 having bought it more than a year ago :-(
Love my DVDs!
