I know that the subject of whether it's a possible upcoming story-line has been talked to death... But just now, I think I have at least some circumstancial evidence that the future is children, and not in some trite social plea for investment way.

We got pretty big hints at least in Heart of Gold. The movie, as far as I can recall, the issue didn't seem to come up. That could be just an oversight... Or it could be that the question was resolved in Better Days.

In Better Days, with the prospect of money and a change in lifestyle, we saw Wash capitulate on the subject. They didn't have the money that long, but... Ritzy hotel, wife and a reluctant husband come around to the idea? Is it a stretch to say on that vacation they might have started trying for a pregnancy, and that even after the money was gone, it would be unlikely for either of them to decide to terminate any resulting pregnancy?

I still kind of think it's a cop-out for Zoe dealing with her grief over her husband and other long standing issues, but I can't deny that it's probably the most likely direction the story is heading.

Zoe, Dust Devil, Wash didn't know and is mortified that a SpOps death squad is after her, Mal gets his ass beat instead of Zoe, doesn't sound like a very romantic getaway for anyone...Better Days is months before Serenity, no baby bump, before or after the funeral.

I dunno, I think poor Zoe and Wash ran out of time:( and that’s the reality of the story.

And, like my Mom always says, you wait until you have money to have a baby; you’re going to be waiting a long time.

Maybe. But there seems to have been at least a little while where there could have been some romantic interludes.

I'm not sure whether it was just a day or more when Sarna captured Mal, but Mal was definitely captured at sunset, so they had at least a day there. Would Zoe have spent the entire time getting spa treatments with Kaylee, Inara, and River? And where was Wash during the day?

Having money and staying in a fancy hotel for a day, isn't going to change Wash's mind in regards to having a child with Zoe, while living on Serenity with Mal. It's the one issue he is able dangle in front of Zoe, like a carrot, to get her the hell away from Mal and his recklessness.

If you look at their shared fantasy in Better Days, they are not on Serenity and Mal is nowhere to be seen because Wash wants to give Zoe and their child a life, full of love and SAFETY, and obviously it can't happen with Mal and Serenity.

If she were to become pregnant, it would have occurred after Miranda and I think I remember reading in the original longer script that Wash and Zoe agree if they get "through this alive" they will start making babies:)

I'm not sure on what page or whatever, maybe someone else knows or can concur:)

I look at Better Days as having a bit of retconn involved.

My impression was that, about leaving Serenity and Mal and starting a life with Wash, Zoe was consenting to that, now that they had the money. The fantasy Wash offered was a compromise: They move away from the violence, but they manage to stay vessel-side, the only manner of upbringing and child-raising that Zoe is familiar with.

She certainly didn't object to the thought of Mal and Serenity not being there, so long as she had Wash and her child.

Here's a possibility: people have looked at how having a kid might help save Zoe post Wash... But what if it didn't? I mean, it likely wouldn't, right?

And some people have had Zoe die after childbirth, either as a result of it or later on account of gunfire, and adding all that baggage to Mal... But what about the opposite scenario? What if Zoe lost her much coveted Wash baby?

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Thanks, I knew I read that somewhere, too lazy to find it.
And, I know Better Days is retcon, but I have a gut feeling that a Wash and Zoe baby was a beautiful fantasy that never had the chance to become real, and this of course brings to light Zoe's paramount lose in the BDM. If we ever get more of the verse, I hope, I’m wrong, we’ll see.
