I thought "Serenity" got the second most votes ???

==

WASHINGTON -- The International Space Station module formerly known as Node 3 has a new name. After more than a million online responses, the node will be called "Tranquility."

The name Tranquility was chosen from thousands of suggestions submitted by participants on NASA's Web site, www.nasa.gov. The "Help Name Node 3" poll asked people to vote for the module's name either by choosing one of four options listed by NASA or offering their own suggestion. Tranquility was one of the top ten suggestions submitted by respondents to the poll, which ended March 20.

We got hosed. Colbert stuffed the ballot box on t.v., to stoke his own ego, and got a tread mill named after him.

What did we get ?

What we seem to get most often.....

They didn't want to name it after him.
However they didn't want to seem 'uncool' and tell him no.
So they made sure that NEITHER side won.

Talk about sycophantism at its best.

So, why have the contest at all?

At least they can watch Firefly and Serenity while walking on his stupid treadmill.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Yeah, my question exactly. They ignore the top SEVEN choices and go with the 8th one? I call Shenanigans!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I sent them a message on their website to plead our case. Perhaps if more people do so, we can get SOMETHING out of the deal.

Zoe: "Get it running again."
Mal: "Yeah"
Zoe: "So not running now"
Mal: "Not so much"

It sounds like Serenity got around 190,000 votes. Tranquility (the second provided option, right?) got around 35,000 votes. Hmmm.... Oh well, I hope I hope I hope they name a manned spacecraft Serenity a few years down the road!

I'm starting to suspect that the results of NASA's little "contest" were determined by the Electoral College...

I think I read that they hired the folks who counted ballots in the 2000 presidential campaign in Florida - to count these votes for NASA.

I heard it was a small group of surviving astro-chimps , who couldn't get hired as F*>< network execs because they're 'overqualified'...

They got exactly what they wanted. They got some publicity for little cost. Really would it do anything to have it named Serenity? Most of us would put a little ticky mark on some chalk board in our minds and then move on never to think about it again. I agree it's lame that they ditched Serenity to be PC but whatever it's not really important in any way.

Some of these posts that are supposed to be funny, are pretty retarded. If you looked at the results, and weren't an idiot, you would see they didn't have a problem with counting votes, they just didn't care about the results and called it what they wanted to, which is what the 'contest rules' said would happen.

lllllooooooolllz take that Colbert XD i kinda figured they'd go with a name different from the top two just to keep the peace. but i'm *so* glad they didnt name it Colbert. Their reasoning behind Tranquility makes sense though.

Are you suggesting that FF fans are too smart to lower themselves to the level of Colbert, and Colbert zanies are not smart enough to get Firefly?

Can't say I disagree.

And this is supposed to be an example of how NOT to be "retarded"?

DREAMTROVE

It's pretty obvious what happened. Colbert being an asshole didn't happen, that was already a part of the known world order. Some Firefly fan dicked us by ticking off NASA. Serenity was the clear winner, and was one of the prefered options because someone at NASA was a browncoat, but then some rabid fan did something so looney and obnoxious that they canned the idea. That's my call. They were clearly predisposed in our favor, and someone on our side probably screwed it up.

once again, they were 'suggestions' not 'nominations'. NASA said they'd consider the top votes, but they still have the right to choose. it is *their* ISS after all. they never said the winner of the contest would be the end all be all.
