Browncoats -
Joss emailed me this to me and I wanted to post it IMMEDIATELY because BIG NEWS is contained within. What a day we had today! But enough from me now, here's a quote from our fearless leader:

"Hi guys. Just wanted to give you some news but guess what? I can't get on the site. I have trouble with passwords. So hopefully Chris B will forward this to you with his wily technical knowledgablosity.

Today was (as I think you know) the first day of filming of Serenity. Which is pretty big for me (it felt weird to START with Mal's death, but scheduling isn't my area). It was a blast. Sean said it was like school was back in session after summer vacation, which I have decided to take as a compliment. Gina did a happy dance (and there are few happier sights than Gina doing a happy dance). We're still flying. And the best part is, that's not even why I'm posting.

The real news, and you heard it here first, is that Universal has thrown down an official release date! So mark your calendars, Browncoats, 'cause if you're planning to get married on April 22nd 2005, you better change the date. Seriously. Who gets married in April? Just change it.

April 22nd. Exactly when I wanted to open, 'cause it's SOON. I can't wait for you all to see what we're putting together. It's a crazy-quilt of infotainment that like to call a 'film', and it just may be the best one ever made. Or one of the ones in the middle. Probably not the worst... I'm thinking middle. High middle. So buckle up and get ready for that patented Joss Whedon "high-middle" excitment. It's on its way.

I'm tired, and apparently I have to direct, like, EVERY scene, so I'm
crashing. Thanks again, all of you, for helping me home. It's good to be back.

-joss."

It was a shiny, shiny day!

Best,
Buchanan

Yeeeeeehaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shiny news! Consider April, 22nd 2005 marked on my calendar & cleared of anything but watching the BDM!

Wait a gorram sec.........Mal's death?!? What in the ruttin' verse are you talking about Joss. I hope that is some sick joke.

I'm thinking a FUTURE scene of Mal's deathbed? But I have to say that making the whole movie a pseudo-flashback would be mildly annoying.

Or he's just pulling our leg.

Either way, WOW. I'm floored. April, 2005. Gotta pick myself up off the floor (and go run Neverwinter Nights Firefly with my friends tonight :)

I have a feeling that the crack about starting with Mal's death is just his way of freaking out the fans. Sort of like poking a stick into a beehive. At least, I hope that's what it is....I would much rather be poked at with a stick than have Mal die in this movie.

So less than a year to go. Woo-hoo!

I am sending out happy, thankful thoughts to Joss for keeping us updated.

I agree. Joss is not the sort who would give away a spoiler of those proportions. Of course, that probably won't stop us from biting our nails during the movie whenever Mal's life seems to be in peril (Darn you, Joss!).

Wonderful news! I'm marking my calendar as we speak.

What? He's killing Mal again!? That's the third time by my count, but I may have missed one or two. Let's see: Niska killed him and then brought him back (applied the pulmonary stimulators and cardiac infusers), because he wanted his fun to last for at least two days; and then I think he actually croaked in OoG, but Simon resuscitated him ("Did I go somewhere?").

And now Joss is killing him again, and right off the bat at that. Mal's turning into a regular Duncan Idaho...

Respectfully,

Here's my only plausible guess: It'll be in the form of a Mal "deathbed confession" scene. There's been some hints of him having to do things he doesn't like in this movie (doesn't he always?) - maybe Joss will start with Mal, old and still ornery, admitting what he had to do way back when, a few years after the War.

I think it's not impossible, though rather clicheed. Otherwise, yes, Joss is just gettin' us all riled up.

April 22nd....looks like I'll be in Indianapolis for Star Wars Celebration III - BUT BEFORE YOU MOCK ME - hear me out.

Celebration II, there was nothing to do after the thing ended except go to the movies, and EVERYONE saw Spiderman (including actors in Star Wars). Spiderman became the top grossing film of the summer.

My forecast - Serenity is going to embarass the hell outta Lucas that weekend, grossing more money and earning better reviews. And it comes out before Ep III which means EVERY review is going to compare it (I can see it now "if lucas had the strong characters of whedon's Serenity...it lucas had a coherent plot like whedon's serenity...if lucas knew how to write intelligent and witty dialogue like whedon's serenity...." come on, join in!)
I say, top grossing film of summer 2005...maybe even in the top ten list.

I know I'm going to go to the movie that day, no matter what state I'm in, and maybe I can convince a few of the bajillion attendees to come with...bwhahaha!

Joss is so the man, but in a feminist agenda kinda way. I must forward this post to all my friends now.

With no big name movie stars in the cast, "Serenity" was never planned to be a blockbuster, just a reliable start to a possible franchise that can turn a profit on a modest budget. I think April is an excellent time for the release. IT means it won't get buried and people looking for something to see on the weekend might give it a try.

The "Mal's death" comment startled me too, but then I remembered that we've already seen him die once and nearly die a number of times. I defer my judgement until next spring.

Besides which, what kind of a death wish would The Almight JW have to be killing such a character as Mal? Did anyone ever hear the messages on Matt Stone and Trey Parker's voicemail after they pulled the Cartman's dad April Fool's joke? They thought the fans would find it amusing, but they got such a vile and hateful backlash, even actual death threats.

I'm going to ignore that crack about Mal's death scene. He ALREADY had a death scene in "War Stories", they gonna kill him again?

Either way, I can't WAIT!!!

Hey, maybe Fox will bring it back as a series of TV movies. It could happen! They did it for Alien Nation.....

I'm also happy, imdb.com has updated the cast list for "Serenity" and it now includes Ron Glass. WOOHOO!!

I love a producer and cast who respects the fans. Nothing fosters loyalty than the acknowledgment of the viewers. Looks like these folks know that, and that pleases me to know end.

I hate to tell you guys but I don't think Joss was kidding...here's the way I see it...movie execs are pretty, and what they do is look back on other similar movies and their successes then make demands on the writers/directors. In this case they looked at Star Trek another small to big screen sci-fi leap. So you can count on FireFly 2 being called "The Search For Mal."
