I was watching "Out of Gas" again...That goes without saying. The little conversation that included "It was my birthday." and then Inara holds Simon's hand. I was watching with the commentary on, and Tim Minear and David Solomon said that there may have been something to that scene. Solomon tried to expound on it, but Minear stopped him, saying that Firefly may rise again.

What the hell? Coming from the creative team that gave us Spike and Buffy, and Willow's kiss with Xander, and Cordelia and Groo, something happening between the Companion and the Doctor may not have been far off.

Imagine if it had happened if the show had hung around for awhile. My jaw would have been on the floor. My gut would have twisted, and my wife would have started cursing.

Then again, this is just conjecture. Maybe Inara was going to get him a pinata for his birthday...Who knows?

Could be something there , could be. Remember , Inara DID tell Mal in Serenity that she was giving Simon one last free thrust, since he wasn't long for this world. ( ques laugh track )

Thanks for the tip. Now I have an excuse to watch that again and see if I can catch up to what you're talkin 'bout.

You needed an excuse? That episode rocks! Anyways, the one thing I've learned about Joss Whedon shows is that you have to expect the unexpected. Would it have been so strange that perhaps Wash turned out to be the big bad one season, or that Zoe would have been the one to betray the Tams to the Alliance, or that Book was really a Watcher and River was actually the Chosen Slayer (One in every generation, take you pick!) You never can tell with the wily Mr. Whedon.

Hey in that script that was on here a few days ago (the one about the festival) it says towards the end that simon and inara share a "look" that Kaylee "sees"

If the speculations about Inara being terminally/chronically ill have any merit, she could be confiding to the doctor about her condition, with their new intimacy looking like something else to the rest of the crew.

I always though that there was a possibility between those two. That hand holding scene could indicate the possibility of the two them having something after Simon and Kaylee realize that it was just not meant to be. There is the other side of the coin too though, that Inara is a Companion. As a Companion, she was trained to put people at ease and comfort them, it could be that all she was doing was trying to help out a friend.

Either way I think would be interesting, either a romance down the road or just a deepening of their current relationship into a very close, confiding friendship. We should all run and hide now before the Mal/Inara and Kaylee/Simon shippers remember where they put those baskets of rotten tomatoes.

Oh God! I don't know how many on this post watch Buffy, but there is a scene where Willow finds out about Xander and Cordelia...The look on her face was horrible. I just don't think I could handle that from my little Kaywinnit. Especially after the way she called Simon "Honey" in Jaynestown.

I just couldn't take it.

This was actually a concept i was wrestling with too. Simon seems like he wants to be with Kaylee, but has a few things against him.

1)his inability to talk to women that he is not treating
2)the fact that Kaylee is not as refined or subtle as the girls he is used to dealing with
3)his talent with saying exactly the wrong thing at the worst time

In the world Simon and River come from, the courtesy is to take people at their intention, to be subtle, make small talk, do the party thing, maybe a stolen, chaste kiss on the cheek and then get married to someone you don't love and be miserable in a beautiful house somewhere with a family you don't really relate to. Kaylee believes in love and honesty, both of which are new to Simon.

Inara, on the other hand, represents the old world Simon knows. she is beautiful, refined, elegant and fits in in any situation... except on Serenity. she stands out as being way too clean for the ship. Simon does too. it's only natural for Simon to gravitate to something familiar, be it subconsciously or not.

I think Inara probably was just going for the knee-jerk companion comforting thing in Out Of Gas, but it might have meant more to Simon than, say, Jayne. Inara would know that.

um... in translation, Inara probably wouldn't do anything with Simon, but Simon would probably like to get with Inara (subconsciously) since she is more the kind of person he is used to.

I think, overtly, Simon is more attracted to Kaylee, but that's not to say she wouldn't give he reason to go somewhere else. She's kinda not all that nice to him sometimes, and I don't think its all his fault. Let him say the "wrong" thing, and she sends him off again, and then there's Inara, having been called Whore again by Mal...who knows?

*thinks*
yeah, that's a good point.

I'd like to think that Simon would be smart enough to keep going where his heart tells him he should be (ie. with our favorite mechanic), but as we saw in Heart of Gold (and in our own lives), that no matter how good your intentions are, there are moments of weakness. Perhapse Simon and Inara would both reach the weakness point at the same time and would naturally come together (no pun intended) to comfort eachother.

then again, Joss is evil with plot twists. who knows

Mal and Inara...well, yeah, I see it, and I don't. She obviously wants him, but she is a proud companion, and he can't stop talking about that aspect of her life. They're both so stubborn. In "Shindig", when he says "Don't go", and then covers it with something lame. Comes across a lot better than why Inara was knocked out in "Our Mrs. Reynolds". Its a Joss Whedon show! Before anyone is happy (however fleetingly) they have to go through hell. I can't think of anything worse for Kaylee to go through. Mal would get over it, but not without a payback to Simon of some kind. Look at me, writing like I really know what's going on with fictional characters. I think I'll just go back to watching Buffy, where there is a lot less wiggle room in the way of interpretation.

I can easily imagine a Simon/Inara detour (kind of like that brief Xander/Willow thing, which freaked everyone out, broke up Xander and Cordy for good, but that Willow and Oz eventually moved past...). One thing you can count on Joss for: serious consequences for any moment of happiness.

I can see it as mutual comfort, but not so much as the romance of the century.

So, which relationship would be permanently shattered if these two hooked up? Would it be Kaylee/Simon, or Mal/Inara?

Good question. My first thought was that Mal might be more forgiving, since he had his own fling and all...but then again he might be grudgeful at Inara taking a lover who isn't a client--and who *is* a crewmember.

Kaylee, otoh, would be mad, but is essentially a forgiving person. Simon/Inara would challenge her good humor though. She might be even more hurt by Inara's betrayal than Simon's. And she might just give up on him for good, reasoning that whatever he wants, it isn't her.

My biggest fear is that if Joss ever lets another couple get together, that he'll feel compelled to break up Zoe and Wash

Trying to think like Joss makes my head ache

Although, this discussion is not completely without merit, I suspect the commentary refers to:

SIMON
I always thought the name Serenity had a vaguely
funereal sound to it.

INARA
I love this ship. I have from the first moment I saw it.

SIMON
I just don't want to die on it.

INARA
I don't want to die at all.

That response is not so strange when taken in conjunction with what was happening at the time ie, the soon to be defunct Serenity. I don'tbuy that Inara was going to bite the dust. I know that's a popular theory, but I just don't go along with it.

Geez! Why would you even bring that up? We shouldn't give Joss any ideas!

Back on topic, I think Simon and Inara is...interesting. I don't think it would ever happen, except possibly as a jealousy plot device against Mal. I read this one fanfic where Mal saw Inara and Simon walking platonically (sp?) in the street and saw the connection the two of them had from both being highly born in the Core. Anyway, it was a really nice moment. I think in this fic Mal accuses Inara of sleeping with Simon. Hmm...I might have to find it.

Personally i'm a fan of the ripe tomatoes...hurt a lot more to get hit with, and still explode quite nicely.
