At the end of the movie, at the funeral, there is a fourth grave marker, with no face. River places something on it and walks away. What is that?

It was a little launching pad for a rocket she placed there, intending to fire it to celebrate their lives, I believe.

I think it is more likely to be a grave marker in respect of all the people that died on Miranda.Makes more sense to me.

The rocket (Fireworks, actually) is launched in memorial to their fallen friends. We see River attach a note on the rocket, with either prayers or praise for the dead (oriental tradition). Look close, and other notes are already on it. The "headstone" itself does seem to be just kind of a Center stone, to launch the rocket and mark the "cemetery" they have created for their friends and family. Having the center stone as a memorial to Miranda? Sure; Why not?

I heard from some folks who attended the original pre-screenings that the rocket was originally launched, and the burst of fireworks was supposed to blend into the scene with Zoe welding the ship. It would have been nice if Joss had been able to keep that "bridge" in.

Anyone know if the re-released version of Serenity has this scene added?

Joss has always said that the Theatrically Released version of the Film Is "The Director's Cut", so no;
We won't be getting any "improved" versions... ever.

Along with the prayers for the dead, I also kind of took it symbolically all together with Serenity. Rocket...ship...you know. Old ideas die hard.

Director's cut: At least Joss has it out there how he wants it.
