The rocket (Fireworks, actually) is launched in memorial to their fallen friends. We see River attach a note on the rocket, with either prayers or praise for the dead (oriental tradition). Look close, and other notes are already on it. The "headstone" itself does seem to be just kind of a Center stone, to launch the rocket and mark the "cemetery" they have created for their friends and family. Having the center stone as a memorial to Miranda? Sure; Why not? I heard from some folks who attended the original pre-screenings that the rocket was originally launched, and the burst of fireworks was supposed to blend into the scene with Zoe welding the ship. It would have been nice if Joss had been able to keep that "bridge" in. "Might have been the losing side, still not convinced it was the wrong one." -Mal
