There's a "Previously on..."-segment in the beginning... With a few clips from 'Serenity'...

Looks like a great episode...

Whoa! You saw it already. That's cool.

"Night came on, and a full moon rose high over the trees lighting the land till it lay bathed in ghostly day. And the strain of the primitive remained alive and active. Faithfulness and devotion, things born of fire and roof were his... yet he retained his wildness and wiliness. And from the depths of the forest, a call still sounded." - BTVS S3

I couldn't stop myself. I read it. Now I'm even more excited. The previews for this ep were so-so, but that review spoiled just enough to leave me salivating for more.

It's that way a lot for me. I'll see the commercial and go, "Hrm, maybe I'll just work through this episode." But then I'll read the spoilers and and I'll be like, "Okay, now I have to watch. Dammit."

I'm convinced that advertisers are secretly competing to see how many people they can turn off of a show. Every time they see the ratings for Friends they scream, "What the hell? What more do you people WANT to keep you from watching?!"

Actually, that would be "Call of the Wild."

I'd think twice about watching FF after reading this TV guide description:

Firefly (New) Science fiction, Action, Adventure, Safe: When border people kidnap River and Simon, they accuse her of being a witch and exalt him for his medical abilities.

It sounds like a tired old plot. Of course, I know better, but how are we going to get new viewers with descriptions like that?

Because anyone I know will watch it because I told them to... or else...

Actuallly, I copied and pasted that off s Buffy site. I'm not really familiar witht the actual piece.

Tonight's episode rocked. I actually cried in that scene where Simon and River were talking.

I loved this ep. That just goes to show how great of a show Firefly is....it was about River and Simon and I still gorram loved it. They used the word 'gorram' too much, though.

It was superb. More when I've watched it again and I'm not trashed.

Warrick: You didn't have to wound that man.
Mal: Yeah, I know. It was just funny.

Actually, no. I didn't hate it or really dislike it, and it deafinatly had it's moments ("What does that make us?" "BIG DAMN HEROS sir!" hehe), and I liked the Simon and River flashbacks, but I think this is my least favorite episode so far (I can't list The Train Job anywhere because I haven't seen it). I don't really know why, but I think it might have been because it seemed to be trying to be a more serious episode at some points, but without the nice feel that Out of Gas had. And sometimes it seemed like it was trying to lighten up the episode a little. I thought it seemed a bit schizophrenic.

So there's my two cents. I didn't HATE the episode, but it's not in my favorites either.

I thought it was the weakest episode of the season. When the poster above said that the TV Guide blurb made it sound like a "tired old plot"--well it is a tired old plot. It doesn't help that Simon and River annoy me no end, and here we had them as the main focus. There are still great lines and character moments, especially Jayne and Zoe, but nothing added up to much in the present action. It was insight into the Tams' past, and Book's, that gave the events any interest.

But then I always find Drew Greenberg's scripts a bit lacking.

I'm a big fan, but Safe was a weak episode. It was good in that it gave us some background on Simon and River, but nothing for the new viewer to get them interested in the show.

Even the gunfight was confusing and unsatisfying to the action fan (me).

My wife is also a fan and she agreed with me.

Jup, that time machine I invented is a damn good thing..

The same one I used to peek at the original pilot with... It's certainly interesting to see the eps before they are shown on US TV... (Don't talk about TV here... We're only on Buffy season 3 here )

And about the ep: I liked it.. Not the best so far, but not the worst either... It did show some of the "civilised" planets, to keep the ones that put science before fiction at bay. And "Previously on..." Gotta love that... :)... Continuity rocks... :p... Think next ep is going to be really, really interesting...

I see Drew Greenberg as a mixed bag. On BtVS, "Older and Far Away" was disappointing, although it had its good moments, but "Entropy" was terrible. However, I found "Smashed" and "Him" to be amazing eps. I thought "Safe" was good, although a few notches below top quality.

For my 2 cents:

- I think that Jayne was the best part of that episode. His horrifyingly calous reaction to Brook's wound, and his opertunistic raid of Simon's room where hi-larious. He's definately the Cordeliaesque / Anya character of the show, only less with the nice and caring.

- The episode was really good in the fact that it gave us insight into the Tams, all four of them. Up until this point, I think that both Simon and River had been lack luster characters simply because nothing had be done with them.

- But, that said, it is no where near the quality of "Out of Gas."

So was "Safe" shit, or the shit? Neither. It's not supposed to be the Emmy-winning episode. But it does serve it's purpose. Storywise, if bridges the gap between "Shindig" and "Ariel." Most importantly, it sets up for "Ariel," which looks like it's going to kick serious bootay. And let's not forget that if every episode was "Out of Gas," we wouldn't appreciate it for for what it was. Besides, "Safe" was a heck of a lot better than 99% of the other crap that passes for TV these days.
